discontinued = safe queen?

I'd carry it. It likely won't go up in value, or at least to my knowledge, they won't. I do not believe they have enough interest behind them.

I've accumulated my fair share of knives over the years, but I'm no collector. I enjoy my knives by carrying and using them, not by just looking at them once in a while. As a result most of my using knives are discontinued models like my Microtech LCC and CRK large regular Sebenza. But as I said, I'm a user, not a collector. If I'm not using a knife I consider it the same as not even owning it.

Same here. I consider myself a user rather than a collector. Which is why I mentioned that I rotate my knives as EDCs. I don't have a knife that I didn't use or carry. This particular one is the first one I own that is discontinued and so I have to consider whether I should just "retire" it and just use the rest.

I must say that the extra large (5 inch blade) vaquero is an excellent knife. I read somewhere on the CS website that the series is being discontinued, but I can't find the page again. I hope they reconsider their decision.

Jill, I've seen Ti Starkeys go for $105-120 recently.

If you wisely pick the Kershaw sprint runs, they appreciate quickly.

Anyone else have the same policy, of not using particular knives that have been discontinued?

NOPE. I buy 'em to use. I don't have any "safe queens". I don't even have a safe. :p

I do have quite a few older knives that are heirlooms, but all the new stuff I buy I use. I understand the motivation to "protect & preserve" something that's discontinued, but it's just not my interest.

thx - cpr

I don't "safe queen" anything. I carry 'em all.

Sal inspired me when I saw him say this in a thread long time back...

"We've built a few collector pieces but most Spydercos are hungry and like to eat. As mentioned, open, close, cut, clean, oil, cut, cut, cut... To a Spyderco, that is living. All of the effort that we put into designing and building the knife is found in using the knife; The horsepower in the steel, the edge, the ergos, sophisticated mechanisms, carefully chosen materials or custom made materials, history of and refinements to the design, etc. Letting it die in the box is to lose 75% of what we put into it."

Ya don't live forever, and they are just "things". Use 'em.

im pretty sure the BM skirmish is now discontinued. i picked one up NIB about 2 months ago.....$135.....another forum member :)
it has been, and always will be a safe queen. my best friend, and fellow crazy knife enthusiast, picked one up a week after me for $180.
he carries his once a week.
to each his own.

+1, If I like it, I use it...thats the way we roll

If I like a knife enough to keep it, it's a user. If not, it gets traded, sold or given away. My EDC rotation includes a Yojimbo, Manix, ZDP Caly Jr. and a few one of a kind modded Spydercos. They're in my collection because they perform the best for my needs. Performance is wasted if it's sitting in a safe.

I have several CS Twist masters which I use a lot. I know they're discontinued, but it's a good quality knife based on the Opinel design. It was nice to see someone make a knife with this design that isn't a piece of crap. Since CS is no longer making them, that just leaves the Opinel which is not really much of a knife.

I do have a stag handled Trailmaster in Carbon V which is still in the box with the cardboard sleeve over the blade. The blade's never even been in the sheath. I figure one day I'll get rid of it, but for now it's sitting around collecting dust.

I can't really say about the Vaquero. I never really liked it, I don't know anyuone who has one, and I'm not familiar with their worth.

I really like Kershaw and use a couple and have bought a few higher end models.
I don't think they have nearly the collector interest that Spyderco does.
The Blue Ti Bump I bought can be had now for well less than what I paid.
It's a classy little well made knife and I was surprised that it hasn't gone up, due to the fact it was a sprint run. Maybe it will in another year or so, but now they are going for about 130-140 which is a a bit less than I paid from a dealer a few years back.
