Discount knives "good"?........time to recant

Sounds like he pleases some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. Like others among us. Verdict? Mistrial. Like any other "Trial by Internet" verdict.

My experience with Discount Knives on several orders in 1998 has been extremely good. I looked for "the cheapest place" for knives on the Internet from my home in the Netherlands and found DK. ALL my emails, and I have sent plenty of them to Brian were answered quickly . Besides that, I had my orders sent to a fiend in California and they arrived only a couple of days after placing the order. Guys in my book Brian gives a 200% service. I for one am satisfied with email replies, if Brian would have to get extra people to answer ttelephone calls I can imagine prices going up, the effect would be that people start buying elswhere. My thoughts, if you want a knive for less, buy it from DK and don't start complaning about telephone calls not being answered, if it bothers you go into town and talk to a sales person at a knife shop and pay the full price for whatever you waat to buy.
While visiting the USA in July 98 I visited knife shops and compared prices, the 5 knives I bought through DK saved me over $ 100 and that's including postage, that's good money in my eyes.
Best regards, Bagheera

I thought I was going to be done with this subject, but I guess I have to make one more commment being email has been brought up a number of times on this thread.

There is NO WAY - NO HOW that I will give a credit card number via email. Even an SSL online server isn't 100% secure.

At least by phone you know the chances are less likely that a crook can access your card number plus you actually talked to someone and not a machine. Call me perinoid, but hey, you can never be too safe now a days. JUST MY OPINION OF COURSE.

Mark,
Food for thought. How is handing your credit card over to a sales clerk at a store or a waitress at a restaurant any more secure than SSL or for that matter Email?

The truth is that anytime you hand your card number to someone you put yourself at risk.

Mark,
I saw your post about your concern on transmitting credit card info over the web.
I agree with your caution, but please consider the following:
Your credit card itself likely has a credit limit.
You can dispute unauthorized charges. No one, including a credit card company, can force you to pay for a commodity you did not receive.
Chargebacks are common with all credit card carriers. Most even offer chargeback protection (although they would have to do so anyway according to UCC regs.)
You likely have some credit card theft coverage under your homeowners policy-even if it is a tennant homeowners policy.
You have more rights and risk transfers than you think, however, most are subject to a 30-90 day limitation depending on where you live. Your best bet is to be diligent and immediately review and resolve disputes with credit card companies. Do this even if the dispute is not web based.
"SSL" totally scrambles the transmission of credit info. The kinks have been worked out with regard to interlopers, and there is an aggressive industry committed to staying ahead of hacker trends. Your exposure to piracy of account numbers is statistically greater with any transaction that involves a paper or carbon copy.
I have spent thousands on dollars over the internet in the last 18 months without any problems whatsoever.
I'm not trying to convince you to do something you are uncomfortable with. Lots of people feel just like you do.
Just thought I'd offer some comforting facts.
Bill

Now I think everyone here understands my point. It was never that Brian was a crook or tried to screw me at all. I am a customer, I changed my mind, I thought to the convienience of Brian also. If he had a problem figuring out what I wanted he should have called. Here at Compusa Corp if someone has a problem or miscommunication via e-mail, we ALWAYS call them to clear it up. ALWAYS. I just can't deal with "Mom and pop" operations trying to do "big business" volume. doesn't work well Brian. Good luck to him and all of you. I'm done with this subject. buying a used AFCK from Proedge knives and talk about REAL communication. wow, finally.

ABC has a CS master tanto 12 that i'm getting as well. Talked to them really quick twice already. THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Erin

I had had similar problems with Discount Knives. Very poor response to email. When my order was late and I enquired about when it was shipped and what method was used - nothing. Ask information about knives - little help, unless you are placing an order. Positive side though he ships in plain packages with nothing to cause hassles with customs - big plus, and does not try to rip you off with bogus shipping charges. However James Mattis has those same positive quantities and his email communication practices are not lacking.

It is amazing how with enough patience and fortitude I have been able to find a retailer who gives the same pricing as well as ENOUGH cutomer service to boot.

I never did ask for the moon and stars. Just a common phone call or basic communication.

Erin

I'm with Cliff completely. I'd previously posted my lament about Brian. As he stocks very little apparently, the bottom line is that if he can get a product from his wholesaler, you'll have it quick and at a nice price. Anything else including e-mail or his 888 number.... forget it.

He lost me as a customer when (1) I had to ask for confirmation that he'd received my online order (2) all attempts to reach him by phone failed (3) after weeks went by I had to generate numerous e-mails inquring about status (4) I received one reply which said my stuff would ship in a week (5) it never did and I heard nothing further.

I'm afraid i'm with cliff and bald, this guys phone is always busy, which is an impossibility, even at odd hours and he never answers my emails. I just sent him several over the past 2 weeks and no luck. Oh well, someone else just got my business. This guy could have sold a few thousand dollars worth of knives to me this year had he answered my emails.

WOW history repeats itself! I had the very same problem with Discount Knives that Highdlr had and ended up at the same dealer (ABC-Direct). Actually my problem was much worse and lasted over serveral months, involved 4 different knives and an eventual charge back. I am not saying Brian is a bad guy and whatever but now that ABC matches every price I ask them to I have no reason to shop anywhere else unless they don't carry a particular item. Mike and MiMi are great people and if I ask a question I get a real no BS answer. They ship when they say, they email me a tracking number if they ship UPS and I have received every order from them the very next day! I am in Florida too so that is why I get my stuff fast. Anyway this is not a ABC commercial but it should show Brian that he needs to make a decision. He will loose internet repeat business if he keeps doing this. I would not mind paying a few more bucks if that meant getting a human on the phone, a return email or at least a timely delivery. Plus he charged my card for something that he did not even have in stock. At first I did not mind it but he is using my money to buy the product I want to get. He is no dealer folks he is a broker and if he keeps it up he will just be broke. Sorry for the rant mode here I just got back from a dive trip and I am tired and this brought up some bad memories.

I have never dealt with Discount Knives and never will. The feedback in the past has been such a mixed bag, that it is not worth the risk dealing with a business that operates in this manner. There are too many other consistant and reliable dealers too do business with than to waste time with Discount Knives.Later,RS

And Brian wrote me and told me he was going to post my email history on this forum and let ya'll decide who couldn't do the "deal". HA!!!!!!!!! Seems like Brian needs to go check himself. I also agree he is a broker not a dealer at all.

Call him and find out if he is just a broker or not.

Wait, forget that, his phone doesn't work!

I don't like to respond to personal attacks in an open forum but it appears Mr. Phalen just won't let it go. Please note in one day he changed his mind four times. I e-mailed him to please send one e-mail with exactly what he wanted. After waiting four days I e-mailed him that "I think the easiest way is to refund you purchase price. Your credit card has been credited for $XX.XX".

The reason, just for the record, I didn't have you send the Culloden is because I picked one up at a knife show already.
