I'v orderd alot of knives online via telephone. Why because i feel comfortable talking to someone, confirming that they have the item on hand and the anticipated delivery date.

However, with discount knives I have been trying to contact someone via phone since wed. (10/27). The prices seem great, but I guess you get what you pay for (service). I'll pay more and place an order with someone else on monday. Even if I could place the order, I would now have to be concerned if I had a problem, if I ever could talk to someone. I realize I could place the order through the site but it's something i don't feel comfortable with.

Just my 2 cents worth, I guess I just had to "vent" my frustations.

I've ordered from Brian at discount knives twice. Both times, the transaction went great even though I made mistakes (adding onto the order 24 hours later, and giving the wrong bankcard). Brian has been very responsive to E-mail and returned an E-mail with a phone call. I will continue to deal with him (ordering through the secure server).

That being said. He REALLY needs to get some voice mail capabilities or just drop the phone line. Nothing is more frustrating than camping out on a busy phone line. Good guy, great service, poor telecom setup.....

That almost sums it all up. Brian is very easy to reach by email, and has an excellent turn-around time. Those who've reached him by phone say that he's spent much time to serve them, and therein lies most of the phone problem. One guy, one line, much time for each phone call answered.

Go thru the past messages about Discount Knives, and you'll find many happy customers, albeit much (legitimate) moaning about the inability to reach him by phone.

For my part, I am always comfortable buying from Discount Knives, and have done so repeatedly. If, at this point, you're just unwilling to deal with him, then the next place that I'd recommend is ABC -- Direct.

I've bought from Discount Knives. Once, and it was by phone. I was very pleased with the service, and Brian's (I guess) attitude. Great guy.

However, since that one time, I have bought two other knives. Both times, I went to his site, saw what I wanted, at a good price, and tried calling him to buy it. Both times, I tried many times over several days to get in touch. I never could. I didn't want to order on-line, because I had heard that you don't get any feedback from his site about whether the order went through (I never tried it). I like to get that feedback. So, I ended up going to another distributor in both instances. I got good service and price from the other dealer as well, so no skin off my back. But, I hated that I couldn't get through to Discount. I hope he's reading this, so he'll realize that, although he is apparently doing a LOT of business, he could be doing more.

Anyway, if you are willing to order on-line, give him your business. If I can ever get in touch by phone, I will continue to give him mine.

OD,

When I have ordered online I have received a confirmation email the next day after the order from him albeit an automated one. In both cases the online order was a great way to go and I had my knives in less than a week.

Try emailing Brian for availability then online ordering. It works great.

Bryan has a cybernetic operation that is quite efficient. I use him all the time. I also enjoy the few conversations we have actually had.
He works by email. Period.
You sound like someone that should purchase in a store. However, you will pay far more for your longing to handle and discuss your purchases.
Mike at ABC-Direct has been suggested. he works with his wife (marina) and is easier to reach by phone. You may find more comfort with his operation.
But Brian has never let me down and has my absolute endorsement.
Bill

I talked to Brian through E-mail yesterday. He is great to deal with but VERY BUSY. You should know why. Bill is correct, "You sound like someone that should purchase in a store"

It would be easy for the operator of a small business to spend all of his available time on the telephone,to the detriment of the business. I gather that Brian does the bulk of his business through Email, and he does it exceedingly well! Maybe in time he will get far enough ahead to hire someone just to answer the phone. In the mean time, I continue to be very well satisfied with his service.

I have transacted with Brian twice and have nothing but praise for his service and prices. When I can not get him on the phone I send him an e-mail. Anyone who has learned of Discount Knives through The Forum is aware of the type and quality of his business. And, it is likely that this is the venue that business was learned of, because this is also where the venting is/was done.

Complaining about that which is the nature of an outstanding vendor and small busniess (good customer service skills, prices, quick delivery) is the looking for the single burr in an otherwise perfect edge.

If you are an edge-o-file, I wish not to send you off to the relm of retail. It is not for the weak of heart or wallet when making a "quality" knife purchase.

I hope, at some point, you have the opportunity to talk with Brian directly. As for the phone situation, he still prefers to field all knife questions himself. I think an ansewring service would just give him something to do after a day of work!

Just venting on the vent...

Regards,
Mario

As I stated earlier I choose to place orders
by phone. (MY choice) Though I have only made about 15 orders this year, all have been from items I have found online. Discount Knives may have great prices but their business practices do not suit me.

Again this was placed to inform, not bash, I have not mentioned names nor said anything inflamatory.

Thanks for all the (sarcastic) suggestions to purchse in a mall. They really were not necessay, that how flame wars start, one must alway think before they type.

I sent 2 emails to Brian at Discount Knives last Thursday regarding Microtechs that are posted on Dealers Knives for Sale. I indicated that I would like to purchase two of these knives and that I would send a check in the mail immediately if they were still available. I still have not received any response whether I have purchased these knives or not. It would be in the interest of customer service to respond one way or the other.

Actually, I didn't see any references to shopping malls. Maybe one got past me, but all that I saw were references to stores. And one is on shaky ground taking these references as sarcastic or derogatory.

Buying in a store, you get to handle the merchandise, and talk face-to-face with a real person before making final the sale. For some people, this may be just right, and I don't see that the rest of us would have any cause to look down upon such people.

Yes, you almost certainly pay more for such attention, but for some people (albeit not me) the exchange is perfectly reasonable.
