First let me stipulate that I am guilty of what I am about to ask. I can't help but notice on how many items on Knife Exchange are BNIB, "never sharpened", " box and papers" in their description. I usually find them reasonably priced. It leads me to ask how many of us pay retail for the opportunity to see up front and personal with a little fiddling a knife? After the "fiddle" put it up for sale at a reasonable discount to recoup some of the cost for the privilege? I do it, and encourage it too! (however in my case I'm better at buying and accumulating than catch and release!)

I'm a frequent "renter" of knives. It's fun to explore different styles, blade shapes, steels, etc. It's even more fun when I find a knife that just clicks for me and it fires other knives from my collection. And of course sometimes one doesn't click at all.

All of that leads me to being a pretty regular Exchange seller. 😁

I totally agree with Rule #9. To do otherwise, as HW would say, "wouldn't be prudent!"

Selling is a hassle so I tend to just accumulate.
Most of my knives would not fetch enough to go through the hassle for me anyway.

I have gifted many but only sold one (duplicate small sebenza)
I always toss the boxes as well which furthers my commitment.

Getting rid of a few crosses my mind occasionally but I never seem to follow through.

In a different hobby (feels like another life), 20-25 years ago, I did tons of trading over the interwebs. Not like I got ripped off a lot (though it did happen a few times), I think I just eventually got bored of that part of it. Coming back to knives, maybe I'll do some more. I haven't been here very long, but I think maybe next year I'll get my gold membership and unload a few, get in line for a custom or 2, and do some buying now that I have much better context for what I like (and don't like) about modern knives.

But yeah, admittedly, I have made some recent purchases with reselling in mind, even if I'll probably end up giving them away. I used to sometimes trade for gain, but I've never sold for profit. I mean to, I definitely could, but ultimately do not, for some reason.

I don’t buy ‘em with the intent of selling ‘em, but I have sold a few and surely need to sell more. And yeah, selling is definitely more of a pain than buying. You have to find the box and any other stuff that came with it that you hopefully kept aside and intact; then you have to take all the pics you think potential buyers want to see, and take them in such a way that will entice more buyers. Then make sure your for sale post has all the crap that’s required. Then check the forum every five minutes, answer stupid questions, weed through ridiculous offers, haggle with the not-so-ridiculous ones, then hopefully settle on a deal that makes it worth your while. Some people love that stuff; I’m not one of those people. That’s why I’d rather trade in my cars and maybe take a beating on price than deal with idiots trying to sell them myself - it’s worth it to me. Knives, on the other hand, just tend to accumulate. Of the many that never get used, some are too nice to get rid of, some are so cheap that shipping would be half the sale price. The ones in between that could/should get put on the block, well, I just need to get off my butt and get working on that. Some day.

Sometimes I think it's that we buy a knife, either in person and think we like it, or online having never handled it, and realize that we just don't like it. There are a couple knives I thought I wanted but fortunately waited until my local store got them in. If I'd have bought them without handling them for a bit first, I'd like have an ad or two for, "NIB, never sharpened, never used other than a bit of fiddling. Handled it and realized it wasn't for me."
