Discussing our dirty little secret

I'm at the point in my accumulation where my desire to impulsively buy knives has been significantly tempered. If I see an interesting knife, I ask myself whether spending $XXX.00 will buy me a knife that does something better than knives I already have. More often than not, the answer is "no," and I choose not to buy. But I'm not perfect, and it's easier to bite if I can offset the cost by selling another knife that has been relegated to the "cool, but not my jam" pile.

Plus, have you people seen the price of baby formula these days? My little princess only eats the one that costs $40.00 per can, and she goes through 3 or so cans a week. It's hard to justify an expensive hobby at the moment unless it can cover its own costs.

I have bought mostly on the secondary market, but in my earlier dsys I bought many a knife just to see it and see how I felt about it. Many were sold. Some were listed the same day I got them. Others lasted awhile. Almost all cost me a rental fee. These days I have a better idea of what fits and the tunover is much less.
Most weren't sold because I didn't like them, just that they didn't make it to keeper/ EDC for me, so I might as well find them a new home(and get some cash) rather than let them sit in a drawer

I just buy nowadays. I don’t need to sell to afford the next knife anymore. And selling is to much of a PITA.

I used to believe that if I tried hard enough I could own one of each model made by Benchmade, Spyderco and Emerson. This last for a couple of months then the reality hit home. Time to sell😉

First let me stipulate that I am guilty of what I am about to ask. I can't help but notice on how many items on Knife Exchange are BNIB, "never sharpened", " box and papers" in their description. I usually find them reasonably priced. It leads me to ask how many of us pay retail for the opportunity to see up front and personal with a little fiddling a knife? After the "fiddle" put it up for sale at a reasonable discount to recoup some of the cost for the privilege? I do it, and encourage it too! (however in my case I'm better at buying and accumulating than catch and release!)
Good topic. Sometimes you need to see ,feel the knife in hand . Pictures can't show everything that you can observe by having it in hand.
I buy all kinds of knives on occasion ,to " check out " . The forum classifieds is a great place to buy and sell ,and I try to describe to the buyer what I've found . Now sometimes I will talk to the buyer privately about details . Sometimes I describe it in the listing . I try to be fair & honest about what I sell,to the maker/producer ,buyer ,and myself . Plus or minus on the $ flow .

Of all the hobbies you could have ,I think knife collecting/accumulating is a great one for us nuts . Obviously some people won't get it ,but hey ,I don't collect designer sneakers either ,so ...

I can say all this rambling with confidence ,as soon I'll have 2 decades under my belt ,here on Bladeforums !!! So thank you to All involved

P.S. and edited in to add. Now if we did not have the internet to pass along knives ,buying new ones as we go ,it would be more difficult obviously . I think it's a good hobby and good luck chasing your next neat knife ,and good luck selling the ones on the " block " :)

Without a store near enough to visit it makes it so buying to see something firsthand is the only practical option.

Reminds me of a line in this song “It’s treasure till it’s mine then it ain’t worth a dime” 😇 so I find it difficult to recoup funds.
