Sooner or later, I am going to have to go to Disneyworld. Family fun and all that

I don't get searched by park security, but I'm sure the TSA is another matter. Obviously, I don't want to take my folder on the plane, and after Ken Onion lost a bunch of prototypes back a while ago, I wanted a better way than packing one in my hold luggage. Granted my folders aren't as glamorous as a one-off by a renowned knife maker, but you never know what some bored goober will do behind the "Employees Only" door.

I considered mailing one to the hotel ahead of time, and having them hold it for me. My question is, has anyone ever done this, and did it cause you any problems?

I've traveled with knives in my checked luggage plenty of times with no problems. Never shipped one to my destination though

I haven't shipped knives to my hotel, but I've shipped plenty of other things that I didn't want to carry, just because they were big or heavy.
Use the US Mail. They don't seem to have the kinds of restrictions that UPS has. UPS once refused to ship a sword for me, stating some kind of "policy".
US Mail seems to have no such "policy" and I use them.
I haven't actually done this in 10 years, but I think it should be about the same as it was.

As for flying and the TSA, good luck.
I quit flying when the TSA was created.

Never ship UPS! They cost more and treat your package like trash. Not to mention they take 7 days to deliver something. Across the US? 7 days. Across the state? 7 days. Use either Fedex or USPS. Fedex if you absolutely need it guaranteed $$$ or USPS. I ship USPS a lot and aside for some routing hiccups here and there haven't had a problem. For work I ship things like laptops and displays to our salesman in hotels around the world all the time. I've never had a problem with it. I would check the hotel you're staying in before hand though just to make sure. If I ever decide to start traveling, this is what I would do. I don't trust baggage throwers or TSA employees.

One more thing, if you're required to put a description of the contents DO NOT put down knife. I sent a 1911 back to springfield armory for repairs and the Fedex Rep said to write "machined metal parts" on the bill. Works for knives too.

I have had good luck doing things like putting them in rolled up socks, or strapping them to the suitcase frame under the liner. This has worked for me about a dozen times now, flying to multiple countries.

Don't fly. Problem solved. :D

You'll get to see a lot more stuff and might be twice as interesting.

More OT to answer your question...I couldn't do it. I don't trust anyone with my knives. Not even my wife, let alone TSA.

Just put them in you checked baggage, I have flown plenty of times like that and never had a problem. Just make sure it is buried in your clothing etc... (i roll my clothes when packing and whichever knife i have is rolled up with a shirt or something) and it should be ok. I have never had any problems with it. that has been with case knives, benchmades, kershaws, etc....

though when i went out of the country i carried a swiss army knife.....easiest to pass by all laws...that is, when I carried one in Europe....too many museums

I had a Disneyland security officer try to confiscate my Spyderco Orange Urban slip joint because he was looking for clips. Rather than lose my $100 knife I hiked back to my room a mile one way to leave it there (for that day only :D ) so after that I kept it deep in a pocket then I was fine.

Just make sure you don't have a knife clip showing because that security officer told me they look for them.

I can't comment on how to get it there. I drove to Disneyland so I didn't have to deal with that.

I do not fly anymore.

As was noted the tsa are fk heads.

And I am sure I would get arrested when they touched my wife,or gave me a hard time about my steel knees.

I mail all my 'tools' marked TOOL's.

But since I drive wherever I go [ yes, even THAT far ] ,I get to take my tools with me.

You might want to look up the thread by the guy who wanted to know what knife to take to the water park on his vacation...

Frankly, you don't need a knife at disneyland, and having one is disproportionately likely to cause you problems, not solve them.

Any knife too valuable to put in your check baggage is obviously too valuable to cary into disneyland where it's subject to loss, confiscation, getting wet, etc..

Live a little! Experience the breezy freedom of going somewhere and doing something without fixating on what might go wrong and how you can be prepared to deal with it. It's amazingly fun once you get the hang of it. Isn't that what disneyland is supposed to be all about?

Personally I'd rather have a root canal than spend two hours at disneyland. But if for whatever reason I decided to go, I'd leave my knives, guns, firesteels, paracord, hatchets, compasses, space pens, tactical flashlights and whatever else I normally have in my pockets behind and just go with the flow.

If you're really considering shipping a knife to your destination so you can take it into a place where knives are not allowed, you might want to rethink either your vacation plans or your mental rigidity.

No insult intended. I've been there myself and might be there again, but it's an exhausting place to live.

Well said.

For some reason while I was growing up my parents/uncle loved disneyworld. Im talking went there for two weeks every summer from when I was six to fourteen. I didn't mind until the magic wore off after about the third time haha. I've been back a few times since then (I'm 22 now) mostly to see my uncle who got a job as a retail manager in the magic kingdom. My point is, after being at all of the parks, many different times, I've never once needed to use a knife, or heard someone say "I wish I had a knife."

I have traveled with knives in my checked luggage and sent them to my destination as well, but never have I had a hotel hold a package for me.

I would imagine that the hotel would do a good job for you if that is what they agreed to. If it is something they normally do, or something they plan for, you should be fine.

If it sounds like the person you talk to on the phone is unsure if they can do it for you, and has to ask their manager, then I would consider it more risky.

I've fed ex plenty of knives before, just mark it tools and send it on. Just got back from Disneyworld about a month ago, pocket carry whatever you want. I even used my knife at animal kingdom and at epcot, no problems. They do look for clips though and will take it or make you put it in the car.

Make sure to hit testtrack, soarin, the safari deal at animal kingdom and the new coaster there Everest, one last thing check out rocking roller coaster and tower of terror at MGM. We have a great experience for mardi gras there, you should have a good time as well.

I never fly with anything that I'm willing to loose. I usually put in my checked luggage one or two CRKT folders, one multitool, and a fixed blade such as a BK5, or Ontario Tak-1. Also, DisneyWorld is private property, so you are subject to their knife laws, not the city's or states'. They don't have metal detectors but do a bag check, and will spot the clip of a folder. If you were to carry a folder, just sink it deep in your pocket and leave it their concealed.

Remember, there are a lot a families their that don't have the same mind set as you do; They see a blacked out 3 inch folder and think deadly weapon... So even though you want to be prepared with your tool, keep it hidden and use it discreetly.

I used my Spyderco Urban several times while at the park - opening blister packs that the kids bought toys in while eating at California Adventure, etc. I even used it as a flat head screw driver to unleash a train Bennett wanted that was held down in the packaging by screws of all things.

I disagree that a knife is not useful at Disneyland. I do agree that you might lose it or have it taken if seen while in use. But they aren't doing pat downs at the gate, just bag checks. Just be judicious and mature about it.

My take . . .

I have done combinations of all the above mentioned scenarios.
I have shipped knives to myself while staying in Chicago, carried them in my luggage to Disney, AND bought one online and had it shipped to my resort in Orlando.
I even got "busted" at the park with a Delica in my back pocket.
I was wearing tan pants and I guess the clip was obvious to all those behind me.
A cast member walked up to me and asked me if it was a knife in my pocket, I said yes.
He asked me how big it was, and I told him, attempting to hand it to him for inspection.
He told me it wasn't necessary, he believed me, said "can you do me a favor and slip it into your front pocket, and enjoy the rest of your day".
Out of respect to the way they do things there, for the rest of my trip i just had it in my backpack, and I am sure the screeners saw it or missed it every day for the rest of my trip.
nobody made mention of it again.
