Disneyworld, Fed-Ex, Knives, and Me

a slipjoint is the way to go man. case peanut would be a good choice. just check it and if someone does take it just snag another on the other side. Mailing something on vacation seems like more hassle than its worth to me.

that said, use the USPS. they need and deserve your business. not to say that ups is up to anything but i always will go a little bit out of my way to support postal wokers.

I definitely agree that a small slipjoint or a SAK would have been WAY more appropriate for the situation.
especially since I was at Disney for 9 days and only used the knife in my hotel room!

Some of us carry a knife not because we are using it 24/7, but because we want to be prepared in case we need it.

So I respectfully do not hold to the view that one does not "need" a knife at Disneyworld. If one "needs" to be prepared, then one needs a knife in his pocket - whether it gets used or not. The using part is secondary.

I would recommend a relatively inexpensive knife (and for me, SAK) hidden in the luggage. You have the knife in your pocket at Disneyworld, and it makes you appreciate the more spendy knives that you did not bring with you.

And don't forget a flashlight. :) I was inside Space Mountain when the electricity went out. It was very cool being able to see the inner workings of that place in way that one normally does not get to see it.

You might want to look up the thread by the guy who wanted to know what knife to take to the water park on his vacation...

Frankly, you don't need a knife at disneyland, and having one is disproportionately likely to cause you problems, not solve them.

Any knife too valuable to put in your check baggage is obviously too valuable to cary into disneyland where it's subject to loss, confiscation, getting wet, etc..

Live a little! Experience the breezy freedom of going somewhere and doing something without fixating on what might go wrong and how you can be prepared to deal with it. It's amazingly fun once you get the hang of it. Isn't that what disneyland is supposed to be all about?

Personally I'd rather have a root canal than spend two hours at disneyland. But if for whatever reason I decided to go, I'd leave my knives, guns, firesteels, paracord, hatchets, compasses, space pens, tactical flashlights and whatever else I normally have in my pockets behind and just go with the flow.

If you're really considering shipping a knife to your destination so you can take it into a place where knives are not allowed, you might want to rethink either your vacation plans or your mental rigidity.

No insult intended. I've been there myself and might be there again, but it's an exhausting place to live.

Yes...let it all go.
Then, when you NEED a tool to do something, you can be one instead.

I have flown with knives and guns in checked bags many time in the last 10 years with no problems. I submit to TSA and airline requirements and have never had a problem.

Not to mention, you will probably not be at Disney World 24/7...I was a kinda in the same boat last summer. Flying and didn't not want to leave my knife just anywhere in the check baggage. I damn sure wasn't going to carry it on the plane. So what I did was found an old biology book from college, notched out an insert in the pages in the middle of the book to put my knife in. put a couple of rubber bands around it and tucked that junk next to my underwear...it worked.

My job requires that I fly once in a while. I've checked knives without issue, even out of the country (well...canada). Usually pack it in with socks and stuff in a pair of shoes or put it with your toothbrush and stuff. Never had one stolen. Then again, I don't bring any knives I'd be mad about loosing. SAK or a cheap kershaw or spyderco. I do usually bring my multi tool with me though...I'd be kinda pissed if that grew legs. Once time I left my knife in the hotel room and instead of driving back the 5 miles to get it, I just went and bought another one at Dicks sporting goods. Yay 2 knives!

Get something inexpensive that slips in the pocket, or stick it on a keychain (like a sak). No one will care.

I used my knife just this morning at an Easter egg hunt -at a church!

They taped some of the eggs shut, and after the tape got wet, it had a lot of people scraping with their fingernails. I popped open my Mini-Grip, and cut my son's open. I choked up so most of the knife disappeared into my hand, and I tried to be discreet overall about it.

A knife is as much a part of my daily dress as shoes. I carry it because I don't know when I might need it, but when I do, it makes my life a lot less frustrating. Going without it, even while on vacation, is simply not something I want to do, and that's the reason I asked in the first place. No disrespect to those who suggest I leave the folder at home, but that's not an option.

I have a couple small ones that vanish in my pocket. I don't anticipate the need for my Delta-18, or even my Mini-Grip. I'll probably take the one I got from work: it's a Buck-100 style, with perhaps a 1 1/2" blade. Discreet and given to me for free, so if it does get pinched, it's no big loss.

This may also be the excuse, er, opportunity to buy a new knife....
