dissappointed in spyderco today

I bought a used knife (military) that I suspect is a knockoff. It may not be but I want to be sure.

So I called Golden Co today to ask for help.

The secretary said no one would talk with me about what to look for. I have to send it in to warrantee and returns to have it checked.
They said it takes 3 weeks. They refused to have someone from that department speak with me on the phone. They refused to let me just send in photos.

I told them they should just put me on the phone with someone who is knowledgeable about the knockoffs. I mean... don't they care about stopping this? Isn't it bad for their reputation to have lower quality knives being passed off as their own?

I cant wait 3 weeks. I have to return it sooner.

So they lose....if this is not real then there is another vendor passing fakes for real knives that they won't know about because they did not help me.

As I hung up I told them...ok....its your company....

How disappointing. And I liked my pm2 and dragonfly.... oh well...lots of other knife companies out there that deserve a shot i guess.

Post some pics. It's not spydercos job to tell people over the phone how to make better fakes.

I can understand why they would do this. They are protecting their product. If you where say a person who wanted to manufacture knockoffs you could just call in acting like you wanted info and find out how to make a undetectable knockoff.

I see no problem in what they did to be honest.

OP I totally agree with you. How ISN'T it their job? The job of customer service is to help out their customers, simple as that. Not everyone knows a lot about knives and not everyone has a community like Bladeforums to help them. Spyderco's customer service is actually some of the worst in the industry. Before everyone continues on the typical defense of Spyderco, I understand that they are in a difficult place right now, growing as quickly as they are. I just hope that as they grow they take their customers' opinions into account, just like this case!

We deal with spyderco products and we understand what most manufacturers goes thru when dealing with these fake makers. with photo they are able to tell you if its fake or not but not tell you how in exact way to spot them as its all different from case to case. this is the risk when dealing with online seller and we have seen many sad cases of people getting real but used piece declared as NIB too. after a few bad lesson learnt, customers actually came back to buy from us with assurance that what they get from us are the real stuffs for sure.

In some cases they need to see the knife in person to tell you what you have, They can't always just declare "fake" after someone sends them in a cellphone picture. Trivial complaint IMO. if you want to know for sure send it in. You can find out to 100% certainty real or fake.

Quit buying knives off of eBay and Craigslist and buy from reputable dealers and problem solved. Saving a few bucks sometimes isn't worth the hassle of wondering what exactly you just bought.

This is why I only buy knives from legitimate dealers.
If you got a "bargain" off the bay, chances are it is a fake.

a) As stated above, buy from a reputable dealer and licensed Spyderco distributor and you won't have this problem.
b) As you purchased it used, the fact that they're even offering to spend time to check it over is going above and beyond what is required. I wouldn't expect them to casually tell every caller exactly how the fakes are doing it wrong, just in case the caller is a counterfeiter.
c) It sounds like it's returnable, so if you have misgivings, just return it, lesson learned.
d) There are many videos available on YouTube that can show you exactly what you're asking for.

First post...really?
What exactly do you believe can be accomplished with this post that hasn't been addressed already?
Go troll elsewhere.

Sounds like someone was too cheap to buy from a reputable source, too lazy too research the ways to spot a fake beforehand, and not willing to take responsibility for his own actions.

^^^This.

Seriously, it is your problem that you might have a fake. Spyderco offered to take a look and you refused. Then you come on here to bash them?

Do a little research before you buy. Fakes are not that hard to spot if you take just a bit of time to look in to it. Oh, and if you buy from a reputable place you are basically guarantied to get a legit one. Further, any dealer/seller worth a damn will take a return.

I don't think you will like it here if you continue to go about your business in the way exemplified here in your first post.

Fake Millies and Para 2s are getting very difficult to spot That's probably the reason why Spyderco asked for them to mail it in, so they can examine it in person. I don't think we should be too hard on OP on that aspect.

That being said, this isn't an issue with Spyderco, but rather the dealer. It's not Spyderco's responsibility to ensure that people aren't buying fakes - that responsibility lies with the consumer. If they were to assume responsibility for fakes, that opens up a rather large can of worms. Instead, you should be contacting the dealer to return the item if you suspect it to be fake.

Afterwards, send your business elsewhere:

Not really. You just need to know what to look for. The resent experience I had with a fake PM2 it was immediately obvious to me it was a fake, and I had never seen a fake before. Cabela's confirmed it was a fake that they had taken in on a return by mistake. I just watched some videos and read the fake spyderco thread stickied at the top of this subforum. The OP took the time to come on here to bash spyderco with his first post but did not take the time to come on here and read about how to spot a fake. Or take the time to buy from a reputable dealer. That is a silly way to go about things.

I think we all know where he got it from. He probably won't be back to answer that question though.

Go by the rules of common sense, buy from high feedback members on here or from reputable knife shops only.
Spyderco is my favorite brand, hands down!

As the chief executive of e-bay once said: "If you can't tell you're buying a fake, you should not be buying it." Don't buy things with bad pictures; don't buy things you don't know enough about to spot a fake.

Anyway, if you can't tell it's a fake, why do you care? Wouldn't you be happier believing it is real? Remember, perception is reality.

Although I can see your point of view, and understand why you are disappointed, what they did was correct on their part. How do they know you are not some faker looking for ways to better your fake product? In your case, you are an honest dude, but how do they know. All they can really say is....look send it in.
