dissappointed in spyderco today

Spyderco is a large company and the repair depart is small. Three weeks was probably a worst case. Also by them talking to you on the phone and exchanging pics is going take time away from repairs to real Spyderco products.

BTW, I had a fake I posted here, Spyderco got involved and proved to be an exemplary company in the way they handled the issue.

Also, I hate these types of posts.....you make a potential mistake in buying a counterfeit and it is Spyderco's problem because they aren't bending over backwards for you. You should of posted pics here and had some of the forum people look at it. Probably would of saved you some grief and badmouthing a great company.

totally agreed screw. why is it their fault that you tried to skim their profits buy not buying new or from a reputable source. either way i think them offering to take a look at it (for free) was a nice gesture. and only three weeks. really...you don't have another knife to carry for three weeks. your looking at a spydrecos spec while you have a log.

Not really aimed at the OP but I'm amazed that people are still gullible enough to buy from Alibaba or similar sites that sell PM2s for $12.00 or something similar and claim they can do this by buying wholesale from the company and "eliminating the middle man" and people still gobble this up.

But you really can buy Oakleys for $15 at the flea market-that's no joke.

Hi Cooldays,

Welcome to our forum.

Sorry for your disappointment. Try to keep in mind that thousands of counterfeits ar sold over the internet and at shows. Some of them are very close to originals (except for the quality of the materials.) We cannot tell for sure that it's a counterfeit without examination by an expert here. Certainly nothing we can tell over the telephone or even a picture. People regularly call here to try to find out if they purchased a counterfeit model. Our customer service department is busy taking care of customer service issues and trying to discuss the issue with a person on the telephone is counter-productve and nothing can be determined for sure. The counterfeits are a big enough problem for us without spending a lot of time on the telephone.

Just about anything from Alibaba is a fake. We saw no originals there. They also Sell Spyderco watches, etc. By permitting Alibaba to sell in the US, the powers that be opened up a direct line, in my opinion, from Chinese counterfeiters to the US public.

I started an account here because I wanted help from people.....I live in rural nc and there are no dealers that carry this blade that I know of. I figured people here would be welcoming and supportive. This is the first forum I have been to that I have been slammed for asking for help.

thanks for the warm welcome.

@cooldays: You know who just responded to you, right?

You say you got it off the river site that we aren't supposed to mention (not a paying dealer), but did you purchase from a third party vendor?

Amazon itself is usually pretty good about not shipping fakes. The marketplace vendors are anyone's guess. Either way there is nothing to say someone didn't return a counterfeit which then got shipped on to you. It happens. By all means post some pictures here...

Spyderco can (and WILL) help you if you ship the knife to them. They gave you a 3 week estimate to examine the knife and send it back. You are unwilling to do that. So what are you asking for here? What is the actionable thing you expect?

Edit: also welcome to the forums. :)

Hi Cooldays,

interesting name for today. Temp at my house this morning was 2 degrees above.

By way of explanation, when someone registers and their first post is a complaint or negative about the company, the poster is suspect as a troll. Many visiting here have been hangin' about for years so we watch for that.

Folks here are usually warm and welcoming and supportive. The counterfeit problem is a real PITA for us and quite expensive to deal with. We have lawyers in the US and in China constantly working to stop them. We have one of our managers heading to China this weekend to continue to fight the fight. We have spoken with our Congressman, we have spoken before a Congressional committee in Washington. I assure you that our disappointment in dealing with the problem is probably more than yours.

Amazon has usually been pretty good but we're noticing some fakes getting through their system as well, especially when shipped from a 3rd party. As mentioned, the safest, though not the cheapest, way to get an original is to deal with a reputatble Spyderco dealer.

My apologies.

Nothing in your post suggested that you were looking for help from fellow forum members.....

You came in here on post #1 and slammed a company in a forum that they run....

You finish off....

So they lose....if this is not real then there is another vendor passing fakes for real knives that they won't know about because they did not help me.

As I hung up I told them...ok....its your company....

How disappointing. And I liked my pm2 and dragonfly.... oh well...lots of other knife companies out there that deserve a shot i guess.

I am not slamming you for not liking Spyderco, I am just pointing out that you do not understand forum etiquette.

I bought a used knife (military) that I suspect is a knockoff. It may not be but I want to be sure.

So I called Golden Co today to ask for help.

The secretary said no one would talk with me about what to look for. I have to send it in to warrantee and returns to have it checked.
They said it takes 3 weeks. They refused to have someone from that department speak with me on the phone. They refused to let me just send in photos.

I told them they should just put me on the phone with someone who is knowledgeable about the knockoffs. I mean... don't they care about stopping this? Isn't it bad for their reputation to have lower quality knives being passed off as their own?

I cant wait 3 weeks. I have to return it sooner.

Where exactly in your original post did you ask for help? Nowhere. You joined this forum to complain about how Spyderco won't do exactly what you want. And yeah, if you had spent anytime around here before you screwed up you would have easily realized that talking junk about a great company just isn't going to fly, especially when it was you who made all the mistakes. So please don't get all hurt over this. You made a mistake, admit it and move on to fixing it. It is another mistake to come on here and slam Spyderco. We are pointing this out. Move on and fix the situation.

I bought this on amazon btw.

Welp, return it and buy from a reputable dealer. Living in a rural area is no excuse since you bought from an internet dealer before anyway. BladeHQ, KnifeCenter, KershawGuy, KnifeWorks & many others are reputable dealers who also support this forum.

So please, take some time, look around, see what people are talking about, read the rules/FAQ, look at the stickies at the top of each sub forum. Had you done this in the first place I think you would have had the knowledge to avoid this whole situation...

And where else is the owner of the company that you just trashed going to respond directly to you in such a cordial manner?

Coldays,

I agree that the welcome by some members here is lacking in shiny footprints. Sometimes I think some people just hang around the forums so that they can anonymously berate others. That being said, there is some good advice being given by some of the forum members.

BTW Welcome to the forum! :)

OP,

Put some pictures up. I'm sure the knife will get verified right her. Just make sure they are clear pictures.

BOOM. Craytab for the win.

@cooldays: Go ahead and throw some quality pics up of your knife. Use an image hosting site like flickr, imgur or photobucket and copy and paste the IMG tag. I'm pretty sure forum members can ID the knife right quick. Ball's in your court.

I missed the point about it being a used knife. So, really, the beef is with the guy who sold it.

On an unrelated note... This ZDP - Caly 3 rocks. :D

Or if you don't want to do it here, the sticky at the top of this subforum is a huge thread dedicated to spotting fakes.

The biggest tell tale sign of a fake Spyderco is where you got it. It sounds like it was through a third party on Amazon and not Amazon itself. If that is true you should be concerned. IMO a fake Military is slightly hard to spot than a fake PM2. The PM2 has several tell tale signs that never fail to indicate a fake. The military I really only no of one. The inside of the liner lock should have a nicely done even beadblast. The fake will look much messier. If other know of more tell tale signs of a Fake Military, please chime in.

I am not anonymously berating others. Sorry if you see it that way. A lot of folks on here know each other in real life. We talk, trade/sell knives, and other stuff. This is a fine community. I have no problem pointing out the lack of etiquette of new members. Especially ones who come on here and use their first post to smash a well respected company for no reason. All the OP would have needed to do is come on here, be reasonable, ask some sort of question, post some pics. He would have gotten a far different reception from us.

Pics or it didn't happen ;)
Getting off topic a bit but here goes. :D
