Hi All,

I picked up one from the DLT first production run of the Bark River Magnacut santoku.

Anyone else order this?

I opted for a red micarta handle.

Used it twice and it’s picked up a patina like a high carbon steel. I thought Magnacut was supposed to be highly stainless. I don’t mind the patina, just very surprised by it. I saw some other threads on BF about this, I attribute this to roast beef.

Anyone else experience this?

There was a thread a little while ago about Magnacut staining. I have used Magnacut since it first came out and have zero staining issues even with letting raw meat sit on the blade for 15 minutes trying to cause a stain.

Your Magnacut staining is not a steel issue but a Bark River issue, something is happening in the process or the heat treat to cause the staining.

Or the other known Bark River issue of labeling a steel one thing, but it actually being a different steel, as has happened on several occasions.

I've got a magnacut chef's knife and it's very, very corrosion resistant. I've used it to cut tri-tip, brisket, roast beef, limes, peppers, onions, etc. And had no issues with discoloration or patinas developing.
If that were my knife, it would make me think it's not magnacut.

Hit up bark river and see if they'll help you out. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

That's Really dark .... something isn't right.
That's not even D2 "stainless" in looks

*It might be A2
Yep Crag the Brewer - a $250+ PM magnacut steel knife from Crucible Industries and Bark River is not supposed to stain like that - it`s supposed to have the stainlessness of something like CPM-20CV for example.
The high chrome content - 17% - 20% should keep the blade clean - in theory.
The first things I thought of was an off HT or mislabeled steel.
I`d maybe expect it in some semi stainless or carbon knives.

A quick response from DLT, but I wish it were more than handle it on your own…

Hello,

This has been happening with every Magnacut knife from BRK we suspect they are not swapping belts when working on high carbon steels like A2 and 3V so essentially the Magnacut gets a layer of 3V or A2 dust ground into it. Most customers have fixed this by polishing the knife with Flitz or a similar metal polish which removes that layer of dust. We can promise that is truly Magnacut steel as BRK orders it directly from Crucible.

Thank you,
Nick Wright

I’d ask for a damn refund. And never buy a Bark River again. What a joke. I’m near saltwater and none of my Magnacut knives have a spec of nothing. It’s so stainless it’s a Salt knife for Spyderco. It’s definitely not the steel. It’s Bark River.

I'm not a metallurgist, but Idk if I buy That.....

Purely (MY) opinion. I could be wrong..... That's prob what Bark River told them

If it was dust/grit cross contamination I would think it would look speckled with tiny rust dots....? Not swirls and whatnot.
Yours looks like patina, doesn't it?

I'm not sure I buy this response. Maybe it can happen.....in tiny little spots. But to that degree?? I call B.S.

Side bar.......is a santoku supposed to have a recurve edge?

I think it’s just the bottom pic, it doesn’t have a recurve edge.

I like dlt and they're usually really great, but this bark river reponse from them I'm not buying or liking. if they know bark rivers have an issue with magnacut.....they should have bark river polish them up before sending out to paying customers.
