DLT Bark River Magnacut Santoku

I like dlt and they're usually really great, but this bark river reponse from them I'm not buying or liking. if they know bark rivers have an issue with magnacut.....they should have bark river polish them up before sending out to paying customers.
Or stop accepting/ordering/selling bark river knives in MagnaCut until Bark River can get a handle on the issue.

A quick response from DLT, but I wish it were more than handle it on your own…

Hello,

This has been happening with every Magnacut knife from BRK we suspect they are not swapping belts when working on high carbon steels like A2 and 3V so essentially the Magnacut gets a layer of 3V or A2 dust ground into it. Most customers have fixed this by polishing the knife with Flitz or a similar metal polish which removes that layer of dust. We can promise that is truly Magnacut steel as BRK orders it directly from Crucible.

Thank you,
Nick Wright
So DLT “suspects” it’s a manufacturing issue and their solution is to pass the issue along to the customer… I’ll have to rethink about ordering from DLT again.

Given BR’s history of mislabeling steel I’m not sure how much faith I have in DLT’s “promise” that it’s actually Magnacut.

Larrin Larrin

Is it plausible that particles of other steel can be embedded into the surface of magnacut to cause staining and patina to the degree and pattern we see in the pic at the start of this thread?

It seems like a lot of other steel would need to be somehow embedded to get what we see here. I'm not convinced that is a viable explanation in this case. Thoughts?

Could be, I’ve never done the experiment. A heat treating issue like using the high tempering temperature range would also be plausible. The datasheet says not to but knifemakers and heat treaters often think they know better.

Yes, it’s a shameful response. Devoid of any sort of apology or consideration to making this right. Sure doesn’t seem like they care about their customers’ experience. I have ordered from them many times before and dont think I’ll be doing so again.

An unacceptable response for a known issue. I would not accept that as their final response.

I don't know about you guys but a follow up email would consist of "No I don't think I'll be polishing my brand new expensive knife, please accept a return and give me my money back"

I'd imagine there are some smaller knifemakers on the forums here who would be happy to make a nice magnacut santoku. Or just grab a magnacut 119 from Bucks custom shop and use it in the kitchen! Lol! Buck does it right.

Why don't you just polish the darn thing or send it back to BR and let them polish it. It's not a big deal.

Why should he sink the extra time, money and effort in when he purchased a finished knife that the vendor admits has know issues from the manufacturer?
Why doesn't the vendor ship him free Flitz?
Why didn't BRK polish their magnacut blades before shipment?
Is it even magnacut?

Dude, if it was a Faberware from Kmart then ya, no big deal. But, it's not! it's an expensive knife made out of high end stainless.

If they know the problem, the whole pile should have been shipped back to bark river so they can fix their own mistake. Not sold to customers with their fingers crossed too see who will complain and who won't.
