DMT continuous and mirror finish questions

Thank you Prime77 and others for sharing this thread. I learned a thing or two. Great job Prime77.

No problem. I have to say that knifenuts advice about light pressure and taking the time with each stone was the key for me. I wasn't spending as much time on each one like I should have. Keeping the stones clean got better results for me as well. A good rinse under running water really helped.

A tiny half-drop of dishwashing soap and a few drops of water on the DMTs helps float the swarf and makes for some nice edges. Much easier to float the blade across lightly with the thin soapy film.

+1 kelbro

Whenever I use my diamonds with water its always with a drop of dish soap.

I worked so hard to get this edge on my Military I just had to show it to you guys and ask another question.

Now that I have worked so hard to get this mirror edge how do I maintain it. Do I just keep stropping on my 1 micron strop. I would hate to have to work through the stones and strops again?

Nice job man. :D The experts can answer you better than me.

I myself think edges like that are for show. I guess the best way to find out is to use ot to cut down a couple of boxes and other normal knife chores and then see how it acts. Probably as you say, stropping will bring it back.

I only got a few edges like that and I found that my knives with a bit less refined edges would bite in and and cut better. Case in point my BM 710. I had it both ways and leaving a bit of graininess in the edge makes it feel sharper to me. Just my $.02 YMMV?

For a steel like S30V you might like it better at just a EF or EEF finish, it just likes to be toothy most of the time.

For up keep on a polished edge strop daily or after any use. It will keep that edge type going for a while but again a steel like S30V does not really benefit from that type of edge.
