DMT D8XX 120 micron stone!

Got my D8XX and a D11C today. I couldn't ask for an easier way to re-profile hard steels. I re-beveled my ZDP Leek -- not as fast as using my 1x30 belt grinder, but plenty fast. The D8XX is SUPER for unloading and lapping the Edgepro stones. Thanks for the tip Thom.

Just ordered one tonight, gonna get a power hacksaw blade when I have some time. In the meantime, gonna break it in on a cheapie Fury fixed blade and a flat ground RD6 with a thick edge. Also thinking of raising the grind height on my Boye folder, but not sure if the dendritic cobalt can handle it.

MeDoctor,

Glad it's working out for you.

I'm finding that the D8XX just grows on me. The D8F (600 grit DMT 8" x 3" Dia-Sharp hone) also r0xx0rz the h0us0rz. The D8F quickly removes the scratches left by the D8XX and sets the edge up for whatever finishing may be desired (either deburring or moving to finer abrasives). For a polished edge, I move up to DMT's D8E 1200 grit stone followed by stropping on leather loaded with HandAmerican's 1.8 micron boron carbide powder and then ESK/Ceradyne's 0.7 micron boron carbide powder. For a toothier edge, I, well, I don't do toothier edges. :)

Old CW4,

Thanks for the link. I've been told to check out the neo-tribal sites for forgemaking ideas and designs.

Well, I just got the rest of my new sharpening stuff today. From the D8XX, I went to a combo SiC stone to clean up the scratches on the Ranger. I'm still messing with the edge, but I'm going to try to get it shaving with the DMT fine sharpening steel. It's very close to shaving now, slices paper like crazy too. Going to go back a grit step and build a new burr.

For other stuff, I'll go to the Sharpmaker rods next, and a CrO loaded strop.

But the D8XX makes this stuff so much faster from the getgo, glad you sang its praises.

Mtn Hawk sings the praises of Razor Edge Systems' coarse hone even louder, so perhaps you should damn me instead (costs less, too). Of course, if you use the D8XX to flatten your other hones, it'll be a step up in that manner.

Wondering why you couldn't shave with the RD-6 after raising a burr on both sides with the D8XX. Is your hair finer than average? Is your climate dryer than average?

Oh no, I just didn't get a burr along the entire length. I cleaned up the bevel with the SiC to check for evenness of the cutting with the D8XX. It's good so far, so I'll get a full length burr up tomorrow

lol, I've still got 13 minutes. I don't have a holder, haven't put the little button feet on yet, either.

The waterstone holder lets you use lots more pressure as well as gives you better hand/table clearance. Since DMT are sticklers for tightly bonding diamonds to their plates, it makes the process very fast.

This is a bit off-topic but have you compared the Razor Edge coarse hone with the DMT D8XX? Just wondered if anyone gets the same, or different, results than I have.

do you have to order Razor Hone directly? I wouldn't mind picking up their stones, this $8 Craftsman combo stone isn't gonna last me very long.

Mtn I have used a Razor Edge Coarse it was in a passaround a year or 2 ago. I do remember it did grind quickly. It also was very dished on both sides. Has yours dished much and have you tried to flatten it? Also how much faster do you think it is than the D8XX?

Price is fine, I just like to combine items I want into one order, so I usually hunt around a bit to find a store that has most everything I want and can ship it all to me at one time.

Though I have already gotten just about all I want for right now. I could do just these stones, not hunting for anything else in particular right now.

Thom-she's shaving :D

Not yet. After my Golden Lobster did just what Yuzuha and HoB said it would, I went to the D8XX and never looked back.

To the best of my knowledge the Razor Edge hones can only be ordered from Razor Edge.

I have done a fair amount of metal removal with the RE 8" coarse hone, mostly grinding down a thick convex edge on a Swamp Rat Battle Rat, a big chopping knife. I haven't used the hone enough to come to a definite conclusion about dishing but so far it's done very well with barely noticeable dishing. However, I use all areas of the hone to slow or prevent it. Haven't tried to flatten the hone since it doesn't need it. Maybe it never will if using all areas keep it flat enough.

It's been several months since I compared the D8XX with the RE, so my memory isn't fresh, but when I did I tried to use them both with the same pressure, technique, and length of time, to keep everything as equal as possible. However, since the D8XX is considerably heavier, and for some of the time I was using it on the knife, rather than the knife on it, overall I probably used the D8XX with more pressure. From what I've read it takes awhile for diamond stones to break in and cut optimally. I was using this one almost new, so there's likely another bias there, too.

Because it's been awhile and the comparison wasn't very scientific I don't feel real confident about giving out a number but I would roughly estimate the RE hone was about 30% faster, maybe even a little more. Next time I have to do some heavy metal removal I'll use both and see if I get the same result.

Thanks. Glad the D8XX worked out so well for you. If you or anyone else ever compares it with the RE coarse hone I'd be interested in hearing about the result.

I'm pretty sure that when the DMT hones are new is when they cut the fastest. Then they kind of wear in and cut at their normal speed for a long time. So if you did notice a difference between the RE hone and a new DMT you probably will notice a larger difference as the DMT wears. Personally I like the D8XX because it will not need to be flattened. I was even personally happy with the speed of the cheap black SC hones I have but They did dish and were a b to reflatten.

To the best of my knowledge the Razor Edge hones can only be ordered from Razor Edge.

A couple of RE kits can be purchased here:

Not indiv. stones right now though.

Razor Edge does have some stones they sell on Ebay at a good price.

They're oil impregnated, but I bought a couple and they work good, just have to be used with oil to keep from clogging.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I had it backwards regarding the D8XX. It will be interesting to see what happens over time with both the RE and DMT.

Thanks. I really like the RE hones (I mostly use the coarse) and would like to see them available from more sources. I use mine dry, keeping a vacuum cleaner handy to clean them.
