Do any of you guys no longer use folders?

I've been carrying a fixed blade for over a year with no sheeple problems. I used to carry an alox SAK also, but lately have been just carrying the fixed blade.

I've used it for tasks that would have broken a folder, and just used it this month as my only blade in constructing a shelter for a Becker forum contest.

You can hit a golf ball with any club in your bag but most people don't try to drive with a putter.

EDC for me is ALWAYS a folder. They fit in my back pocket and I don't feel like batman during the course of a normal day with gear strapped to my belt. A folder also achieves 100% of what I will need a knife for throughout the course of a day and as vwb563 pointed out, I have NEVER had a folder fail me in the course of daily use. Since I never "accidentally" find myself trudging through the woods unplanned and in need of a good fixed blade survival knife I don't feel the need to carry one on a typical day. Now, should the zombie apocalypse hit the world my truck is rarely more than 200 yards away so I have easy access to multiple fixed blades, an ax, gun, survival gear, etc. and won't have the need to rely on the EDC folder that won its spot in my pocket for that day.

Not to say I don't love my fixed blades. I do. I actually have way more fixed blades than folders and probably a lot more fixed blades than I need. Unfortunately 5 days a week in an office is way more time than I get to spend hunting, hiking, backpacking so from a use perspective my folders see a lot more time than my fixed blades.

I still have a couple folders, but they haven't seen any use in a very long time. My pink Izula has taken over EDC duties and I don't miss all the tedious maintenance folders require at all.

i live in a major city with high crime, so our laws here are a little more strict.

although im relatively new here at BF, ive always had an attraction towards knifes, mostly folders. but the more i think about it, the more i feel folders have such limitations.

so i agree with you about folders, and looking more at fixed blades. when during outdoor use, i dont want to think about how im treating my tools. i think, fixed blades are all around better tools.

i still like folders, something about their designs, and cool factor that still attract me, but ive limit myself on only using and carrying small folders, in the 2 inch blade length range. i still want to try out a para2 though LoL.

I have 2 fixed blades and probably close to a hundred folders. I don't use the fixed blades ever really and can use my folders for anything I need a knife for. I also spend a lot of time in the woods and have never needed to beat on trees with a knife. I make fires all the time and have never needed to baton wood or make fuzz sticks and I definitely don't cut firewood with a knife. I clean quite a few animals every year and a folder skins, quarters, and de-bones every one. Some warm soapy water and compressed air has always gotten them squeaky clean. I use folders that have reliable, strong locks and if a folder won't do something, then I probably shouldn't be using a knife anyways.

I also like to flip my folders to keep my hands occupied and a folder is like a yo yo versus a pet rock for a fixed blade. I'm also an engineer so I like things that are mechanical which a folder almost always is. I don't see myself switching from folders to fixed blades any time soon.

Help stamp out fixed blades!
:D:D:D:D

I...know... that killinfolksknives should be a strong fixed blade sabre ground super steel serrated sawback skull-buster-pommelled ZDP-189 with 1050 spine blood grooved kukhri/machete combo things, but I carry a folder and want to spend my john time reading all about my folders.

;)

95% of my knives are folders. but for reasons like lower maintenance, strength, quicker to take out and use etc. fixed blades can't be beat. i've been carrying an izula 2 and i like it. i'm looking for a different sheath at the moment...maybe a leather one that has a pocket clip and allows for deeper pocket carry.

You know, this got me thinking... Everyone always questions the need for a fixed blade, as if a folding knife is the de facto, "This is what should be in your pocket," type of knife.

Well, why? What is the real point behind the folding knife? To remain compact? Safety? I remember seeing an interview with a guy from Buck knives saying one of the reasons they made the Buck 110 was so that if someone fell off their horse their knife wouldn't cut them 'cause it would be closed.

I think the main purpose of a folder is being compact. I suppose that one might argue that a closed knife is safer, but I might counter by saying that a good sheath is just as safe, and further a folder can open in a pocket (ask around, it happens).

At the end of the day, there are different people with different wants and needs. People should choose what they like, and remain open minded to the possibility that they may change their minds. I see no need to declare one knife better than another as sometimes happens in these threads (locks vs slip joints, folders vs fixed blades, carbon vs stainless...the list goes on).

I like what I like, but I might change my preferences over time.

I agree. Im always exerimenting with different makes, styles, and models of blades and you just have to do what works for you. I was just curious if anyone else had noticed a shift away from folders. I still love a good folder but I just never use them unless its EDC.

For my lifestyle, fixed blades are very rarely practical or appropriate. I still own some, because I'm an enthusiast, but 90% of the time it's my Sebenza in my pocket.

I love folders but, with the exception of SAKs which I truly find indispensable, I only carry a folder--instead of a fixed blade--when concealment and legality demand it. I only have one folder: a CRKT M21-14SF.

I'm a firm believer that you should never use a folder if a fixed blade is available. I also know that the majority of knife work I do (other than food prep) is done with a folder because they are just more convenient to carry. For 99.9% of CUTTING tasks (as opposed to prying, chiseling, hammering, etc.) there's really no loss of functionality with a folder.

The one place where I will go out of my way to have a fixed blade available is for processing game. I really hate scraping the hair, blood and congealed fat out of the crevices of a folder if I can avoid it.

I was dead set against using a folder as a backup weapon, till I got the Bedlam.I work plain clothes a lot more now, and a fixed blade is a bit harder to conceal, especially in hot weather. I now appreciate these types of knives. I still only have one folder, but I’m looking for an Emerson now, so I think I’m a bit backwards. Ha !

I prefere a FB for almost everything as well, but I have yet to find a sheath that works as well, safely and quickly as a properly designed one hand opener. Therefore I carry a folder most of the time. The only times I've cut myself when actually using a knife are foolishness on my part or when closing the knife (everything except a liner lock), not lock failure.now, for a S.H.T.F. knife, only a FB.

I just got a bedlam. It is without a doubt the best folder Ive ever had. It has a massive blade with a useful shape and a really ergonomic handle. Puts all other folders Ive had to shame in the comfort department.

I guess my folders outnumber my fixed blades 4 to 1. Though I do go into the woods, own some wooded land, it isn't all that often. But when I go it is usually to test out a fixed blade, ie Browning Competition, OKC Ranger Hawk.

For everyday use a folder handles the jobs I need a knife to do, so I carry a folder as my edc 100% of the time.
