Do any of you not have your priority straight because of knives?

As the title says, do any of you neglect other things in order to afford the knives you want? I'm not talking about to the extent of not paying your bills or not feeding your kids, but I'm talking about holding off on something that you have been wanting for a while.

Take for example, I have been wanting to buy a new mattress for the longest time. But I never did because I always thought the $500 would be better spent on a toy. I already have a mattress.... yea it's 15 years old and I have chronic muscle knots on my back... but hey I already have one, so that can wait!

When I almost pulled the trigger on a Umnumzaan I realized how ridiculous the whole situation was. As cool as knives/toys are, I came to realize there are other priorities that should be taken care of first. I'm pretty proud of myself that I resisted my urge to get something I want and instead spend the money on something I need. Maybe I am really getting old.

Any of you have similar feelings/stories?

I buy knives after other suff I want/ Need and i have money set aside for Pre Orders and Customs as they come in.

I wear pretty much the same set of shirts every week, the same single jeans and work pants, and that last can of beer in my fridge was from a six-pack I bought 10 months ago. I don't think I've bought any new home entertainment devices in the past year or so. And did I mention I walk to work?

Yeah I don't waste money on booze or every new gadget that comes down the line, got better things to spend money on that will hang around a lot longer and I can get use out of.

There's a lot of knives I would like to own but are way out of my price range. The economy sucks , prices have went up and continue to do so but my wages stay the same.
Less $$ for toys I do not need.

That said , I just scored a much wanted BM Lfti , but that's the last knife related purchase for a long while , unless I happen to come across extra dough.

I buy knives, then I don't have any money left for crystal meth.

I, as someone still living with my parents, do not have to worry so much about these things. I do, however, not have a solid job, for several reasons, and so the money that does come has to go to where it is needed most. if i have to buy earphones or something like that becuase i abused mine too much (i run through about 1 pair of iphone earphones every 6 months), then that cuts into my knife money. I have stopped buying production knives becuase all of my money is going into steel, files, and other stuff like that. I built a little forge in addition to everything else. I look back and think that the 150 bucks that i have spent on knife making stuff could have been, for example, a spyderco military, and i am happy with what I have done.

tl,dr with discretionary income, do whatever makes you feel the best. toys are good, but they are not the end all, be all.

I have a purchase lined up that has taken me several months to arrange because I can only commit a few dollars at a time.

I collect pocket change, the odd dollar here and there, and finally drop the hammer when I have enough scrounged.

In this particular case there will be several knives in the buy, and all but one of them are coming from the same place.

The most expensive knife in the mix will be $40.00, with a couple just under that.

My son offered to lend me the money to buy these last year, but I held off until I had more than 85% of the money already stacked, and only let him cover the last few bucks when I realized that RagweedForge was running out of certain specific things I wanted. It was turning into a race between my parsimonious habits and Ragnar's inventory depletion.

The wife occasionally blesses me with a gift (like the Buck Paradigm she funded at this last factory inventory sale), but anything else (meaning knives) I want to buy takes a back seat to everything else.

A few years ago I had $300 a month in disposable income for which I didn't have to account, and I did most of my "what works for me?" research during that time. I have a lot of random pieces from that time. A similar cash surplus today would be much more judiciously spent.

That doesn't mean my priorities are straight.

It just means I still have some restraint in the exercise of my distorted priorities.

:D

im 100% the same, only i ride a bike lol

I can afford the knives I buy, sure I could save more. But this hobby is within my means, most of the times, some months I go a bit overboard though.

Oh man, you had to do it, didn't you?? Had to go and open that can of worms..:D ;)

Because of the lifestyle I live, knives/guns/gear are my main indulgence. I address my various needs first, but after that most of my disposable income goes towards those things and their accessories.

I only have a folder and a small necker right now. I don't buy without flipping something else, and I generally have 3 knives or less at any given time. I don't need, nor want anymore. The ones I flip fund knives that cost more, so every knife is an upgrade of sorts, until I finally buy "the" knife in each category for me.

I've commissioned two such knives quite a while ago already. The pocket/necker/small fixed blade category is filled once I get one of those customs. The folder category will be filled whenever DDR gets to working on my knife.

Despite my previous post, I do find this thread interesting. I had a discussion the other day with my wife, who's a smoker (I don't smoke). I said to her that if I saved the cost of what she pays for a pack of cigerettes per day, I could have a pretty damn nice knife every month. After two or three months, I could have a Sebenza! :D

Of course, she wasn't too thrilled with my logic....:cool:

I've got to cut back on my knife habit. Car insurance and other obligations will be eating up my funds for the next couple of years. :(

She'd probably prefer you save that money to buy her more packs of cancer sticks.

Echoing what others have said, the money I spend on knives comes out of my discretionary income; it doesn't eat into more important or basic needs/wants.

Sorry, but that made me laugh. True though. Don't spend too much $ on products that enter and exit the body in a hurry.

(note: I'm not insensitive to the destruction CM has/can cause. As a retired science teacher I've seen it first hand in my community. But, I gotta keep my sense of humor intact, it's a frontline defense).

I don't buy sugary stuff as often as I would. That literally just happened to me 2 hours ago. I was late to tae kwon do, so I thought "Why not run across the street to Harris Teeter and grab a Monster, kill some time?...Or I could buy a nice whetstone."
