Depends on how big the critter is thats about to bite you on the butt!!

Well, I obviously don't speak for everyone but, nope. I enjoy bigger knives at home because they are just as fun to play with and you don't have to pakc the extra weight around. As far as cutting goes, I get by fine with my GT manual and carry a machete around for chopping. I've just yet to see the niche I'm leaving open by letting the bowie stay home.

Sincerely,
Adam

I usually carry a medium size fixed blade (about 6" blade) on everything but the most demanding backpacking trips. My SAK still handles most of the chores, but, using the fixed blade to hack brush and tinder is one of the best stress releases I know. Die twig Die?!?... yup we all need to get away once in a while.

Hey Alan...

Probably the one thing that has opened my eyes since I joined blade forums is that a lot of people like the Bowie design.

I guess it's a very traditional design,,lots of people make them, and lots of people love them.

Now I don't want to offend anyone, what you like is what you like, it's just that I don't see or I guess a better word for it would be "feel" a tingle when it comes to bowies,, they just don't do it for me.

Maybe it's that I've seen so many cheap junk knives over the years, a lot of them bowies that I've got it in for them.

Although I've look at many custom knife makers that have made bowies and they are beautiful.

Maybe I'll learn to like them yet!

I think you knife makers are lucky SOB's doing what you do!

I've seen A lot of gifted artists here....

Hmmm..Just realized something,,boy did I wander off on a Tangent!! LOL

Anyway.. Alan...

I like to have a selection of tools when I go Bush. Unless I'm planning on making something out there I usually don't bring a big hacker with me. Although my AI will be carried into the bush as my main knife from now on...

I like to carry at least a 7 inch blade that will stand up to some decent hacking. I hunt for small trees and limbs to make into hiking/walking sticks. I get very picky in my selection and sometimes I have to hack a few limbs to get in position to make a good cut. I also like to whack off the extra limbs from the one that I cut. I also feel more secure in the woods with a big knife.

I am curious, what kind of knife was used to skin out that TOP RAMEN?

IO have lately started to carry a CS bushmaster while tripping in the bush and it does a good job on anything I asked of it. However it does not do a better job than the variety of about 4" bladed knives I carried for the previous 20 years. This summer, my #1 bush knife will be my Spyderco Moran FB.I
am sure it will be more than enough knife.

Generally I carry three knives-A SAK with a saw, a folder or some kind, and a fixed blade. Right now I have a Busse #7, but I'm getting a #5 and #9 so I really couldn't tell you what my favourite size is yet. Although from past experience I'd say it'll be the #7.

A good small knife is all you will ever need IF YOU CARRY A SMALL AXE OR A GOOD HATCHET. Otherwise you need the big task capability of a bigger knife. Notice I said bigger not huge and silly and heavy. I would prefer a good small belt ax and a six and seven inch blade combo over anything.

Not liking a Bowie is UNNATURAL, remember guys its the only true American knife. There may be a lot of junker POS out there , but there have been IMO, more beautiful Bowies made then any other knife, There's just something about the feel of all that cold steel in your hand that no small knife can compare with.

Funny, I just got done posting on a similar thread over on Lynn Griffith's forum. My response was that I generally carry three knives plus the Wave multi-tool. The three consist of a Busse #7, the Griffith Tracker, and either the large Wegner or the Gerber ATS-34 Gator. Both the comfort of having them and the fun of using them more than make up for the extra weight they add. And yes, the Busse does give me that warm and fuzzy feeling! It's the one that goes into the tent with me at night!

I have several large knives with ~7" long blades, good steel, good edges, good makers, but they don't come close to being able to do big jobs. Let me explain further...by big jobs I mean clearing brush, chopping logs, etc. They aren't even that great for clearing twigs. I like them a lot, and they are fun to look at and play with, but for real usability they seem like they are in knife limbo, to me at least. Usually when I need one of the big jobs accomplished above, it's when i am out mountain biking on trails that haven't been used much, so I carry in my JANDD hydration pack my Roass Aki machete at all times and occasionally an HI 15" khukuri for chopping. When I am out on a hike or something and I want to have a fixed blade, I generally choose somthing shorter, like with a 4" blade or so. I also don't forsee too many wild animal attacks where I am, and I rarely worry about a bunch of rednecks trying to make me squeel like a pig!

And if they do, that's what the little neck knife I have stashed away is for, I guess!

I never thought of a bowie knife as a field knife, I always thought of them as city knives. In the field I take around a 4" blade for cleaning game and utility and either a hatchet or a machete. For years I would always carry a light 18" machete or sword bayonet in the field. Now I carry a small hatchet.

I consider a bowie knife a fighting knife more than a field knife. As such I figure it for a town blade. The bowie design comes out of the pre-revolver era where it would augment your single-shot pistol. It's more of a social tool than a garden tool.

Interesting thoughts on the Bowie, Jeff Clark.
I'd never really looked at it in that light before, but it does make sense. Hmmm...
I used to like to carry a bowie when hiking for the same reason Allen Blade does, basically.
I could easily get along with a 4" drop point and a folder, but there is something secure feeling about havin' a big ol' honkin' Bowie strapped on. Of course, it did occassionally draw the odd look from fellow hikers I'd meet every now and then, but, what the hell. It's not really freedom if you can't exercise your rights now, is it?

IMHO I really prefer a fixed blade around 5" or so (I really like the Chris Reeves Knives of that size). I don't think a blade much more than 7" is very practical. I really don't do a whole lot of chopping when I'm in the bush. Most larger pieces of wood I either smash/break or put it in the fire as a whole.

Building shelters...haven't really needed to, but in a pinch I think that the 5" blade would be adequate - we are talking about survival and not construction of a new cabin, aren't we? - and besides, I would really prefer to use my SAK saw or pocket saw to cut branches and such with.

I've carried 9.5" blades and find them just too damn big - and I ain't figurin' on 'ttackin' me no bears...that's what your buds for - he's food, while you escape (insert smiley face here - 'cause I don't know how).

Anyway, just my $1.25 (inflation and exchange included...and taxes)

I have one of those Army issue leather handled survival knives that I carry if I'm in an outdoor situation, perfect for any harder cutting & sawbacked to handle the tree limb thing. I always have an axe and a hand sledge for anything else. I like big knives, just haven't found anything I like that I would be willing to use (those customs are way to pretty). There was a story in a past Blade mag about an Elephant tamer who made some beautiful knives, even used some of the tusk the animals had shed for the handles. That would be my choice, but way too nice to hack a tree limb with for me.
