Do I Need a Bushcraft Knife?

I'd be inclined to use very fine wire wool rather than paper. Much more compliant and easier to achieve uniform results than with paper. Really fine stuff is what I have used to oil finish gun furniture.
 
Not heard of this before. Are you suggesting to rub the beeswax on the grip?

That's what I'd suggest as a first step as well. A very light rubbing of beeswax can greatly increase the grippiness. Do this occasionally, and it might be all you need, rather than sanding a purty handle.
 
Did you use sandpaper? If so, what grit did you end with?

I think I used 400. But I may actually do it again soon. It wasn't quite rough enough for me.

What I really like are Dan Koster's micarta handles. He bead blasts them for texture. That is nice.
