Do I need to experience a PM2?

Is the PM2 a must-have for a true knife nerd?

I've never owned a Para3 and just wonder if the after market clips (long or short, mxggear or lynch) are more comfortable on it?
That I don't know and it might just not fit the shape of my hand, with another person it might fit better.
Deep carry pocket clips are a very popular upgrade on the PM3. The reason is that it actually sticks out of the pocket alot more then the Pm2.

I once thought the same as you OP. I’m a titanium framelock kinda guy and thought maybe the PM2 may be overrated. After owning 2 though, it is really a knife that has grown on me. Well made knife that feels great. And it definitely sells me on the compression lock. Functional lock system that adds a bit of a fun factor. I definitely like it more than my manix 2.

Living close enough to the factory to drive there got me over my initial impressions of thinking I wouldn't like Spydercos, mainly based on their aesthetics. I bought my PM2 from the store, and have carried it almost every day since. For me, it's the one knife I feel will take care of most everything I might come across, with a few exceptions. I've since gifted Dragonflys, Manixs and a Chaparral, which are all knives I really like. It's just that the PM2 answers the bell so often, I haven't needed to look too far beyond it for a spot-on everyday carry knife.

I have waffled back and forth between the Delica and the PM2 as EDC blades for a long time. I currently have both and carry them equally.

The Delica is better for daily urban tasks, such as opening packages. The almost-wharncliffe standard blade shape makes it ideal for not having to raise your wrist a lot when cutting things that are horizontal. I also really enjoy the ability to put my thumb and forefinger over the pivot while cutting. It offers tons of control. But you weren't asking about the Delica :)

The PM2 excels at more serious cutting that requires you to grip the knife with your whole hand and apply lots of force. This is where it really comes alive. As others have said, it takes up a lot of pocket space. It has a "fragile" tip. The compression lock is a love it / hate it kind of thing. It's not ambidextrous. BUT, when you grip it in your hand to cut stuff, all those trivial complaints are overshadowed by how great a cutter this knife is.

All that to say I think everyone should not just own one, but USE one for an extended period. I'm going to go against the general consensus and say get a plain jane black G-10 S30v model so you can use the heck out of it and not be afraid of diminishing its resale value. If you like it, then move on to one of the more exotic variations.

Pm2 is the knife that got me started collecting knives. I received it by mistake. I ordered a Pre owned Tenacious and received a Pm2 by mistake. I reached out to the vendor and paid him the difference. It made me understand the difference between a good knife and a great knife. I now have over 100 knives and 30 are Spyderco's. I have had some bumps along the way but if you like Spyderco's then you realize that their is no other legitimate manufacturer that competes with them. You either love them or hate them but as far as quality most of their knives are top notch quality.

You should definitly try the Spydiehole with a compression lock.

For me the PM2 is too big and heavy.

Para 3 fits perfect.
Para 3 lightweight should be better because it's lighter. And also cheaper.
I would wait for the Para 3 LW if I were you.
Seriously a PM2 is too big and heavy? Its a medium sized knife that is very light for its size, just big enough to fill my hand and its disappears in the pocket unless you're wearing something like slacks or gym shorts.

Exactly. Again for those who feel or are afraid that PM2 is too big, you should try Police 4 for a couple of days. After that, I'm sure it will be a non issue.

For the record, I don’t think it’s too big, I just think that for its size it’s a bit of a pocket hog.

At least with me, it has to do with how it rides. The flair at the butt, while super comfortable in use, blocks accessing my pocket. (Wow! No innuendo intended—hahaha).

If I didn’t like it so well in my cargo pocket, I’d try a deep carry clip which might fix things ip front.

No, I’m not wearing skinny jeans. ;)

OP, are you still following? Go buy a PM2!

I usually do not put anything else into the pocket where I clip my folder.

Thanks to the awesome generosity of a certain @Brian_T who sent me a birthday surprise, I have one in hand!

I used some birthday money to buy custom micarta scales made by ID knives, and so far I am loving this thing. I'm warming up to the aesthetic and the compression lock quite rapidly. This one is gonna start competing for pocket time in a way that should scare my other folders.

This is excellent, after three pages of discussion we get to see how you actually like it!

Brian_T is certainly a generous fellow!

Update: The pointy tip of this thing is quite useful. I originally wasn't a fan from an aesthetic standpoint, but it has won me over. The compression lock is pretty great. I wouldn't say it beats the Axis lock for my personal use, but it is close. The ergos are great.

I'm shocked it took me this long to realize what a great knife this is.

I got fed up with reading how the Para 2 was the be all end all folder so I bought
a plain S30V satin blade in black G10 and waited for it to arrive to see what all
the raving was about. I was AMAZED at how well it was built and put together.
I loved the compression lock and the ultra fast opening. The full flat grind cuts like
mad. I bought one for my BIL and he loves it...and I bought 2 more, one in S30V
and one in M390. mine are all clipless to ride in the bottom of my jeans pockets.
I love them. Light, fast, ergonomic, and superior cutting.

Every knife enthusiast should try one...and most that do will agree it is
an epic design. Some guys do like smaller blades and the Para 3 suits them
perfectly. Try the Para 2 first...the "hype" is actually hard won genuine enthusiasm
for a fantastic folder!

Edited to add...I did not read the whole thread! Now that you have one you
are discovering what many have!!! Enjoy!

For most of my life, I was a one or two knife kind of a guy. I bought my first Spyderco, S30V DCL PM2. to replace a missplaced knife i had for some 20 years. Found that knife at a later point, by the way.

The PM2 became my favorite knife. Along with other Spyderco models and even hanful of different brands, this is where I am today,

When I got into nice knives, I bought a PM2 and thought it was ugly. It sat in my drawer for about a year while I carried a bunch of other overbuilt knives. Then, one day, I decided to try my PM2. It sliced so much better than my thick-bladed folders, it its all-around handiness and utility just blew me away. Now I considered it the closest thing to a perfect EDC folder, and I own/have owned around 25 variations of it.

PM2 is like the perfect size for me, perfect in every way. Great ergonomics which for me is important with an old hand injury. Easy to whip out and use and put back with one hand. I liked my BM 943 but the handle was too small for my hand.

And I personally feel the QC is higher with spyderco. It’s a pretty incredible knife. It’s light and it rides in the pocket well too.
