Recommendation? Do I really need a VFD?

No offense, but it sounds like you have a reading comprehension problem.

I'm not "stuck on 3hp". 2hp 3ph motors aren't all that available right now. 1 or 1 1/2 aren't an option. I'm not spending all this money to just go half way. Buying a 2hp, then choking it on 120 VAC makes no sense - at all - unless someone simply doesn't have 220 vac available in their shop. I've got power to burn. Plus "buying a 2hp" is the problem; not cord size or power or whatever.

As far as starting a new thread, this one seemed like a good option since the OP got his question answered and we obviously had a bunch of grinder experts on hand already. (I consider anyone who can spell VFD a grinder expert.)

I'm just looking for a 2hp 3ph grinder motor for a decent price; it normally shouldn't be hard, but now that I have a grinder, they all disappear. :(

There is no shortage of motors.

All you have to do is find one.
Not all things are on the internet

If I find you one, are you going to complain that it's too expensive ?
Because going 3 hp is more expensive in vfd and motor and wire, plus the shaft size on the motor changes so the selection of drive wheels is less diverse.

Give me your country, state and town. I bet there are motor shops around.

If you're an engineer, don't you have supplier contacts of your own ?

That's not really how electricity works.
The load we put on belt grinders is nothing compared to pumping water and such.
You can run 2 hp on 12ovac fine.

This tells me everything I need to know about your credibility on this subject. It's right up there with your reading comprehension.

It's clear you have no intention of helping me find a 2hp motor. It's clear that you are far more interested in making snide snotty comments.

Have a nice day.

Well I can see with that attitude, you're not going to get a lot of other offers to help you.

Try skipping the personal attacks and reading what's written.

Or do your own research

Children, children - Chill out and let's chalk it up to simple misunderstanding of written words which don't always come across as meant to. Yes, we all know there are 2hp 3ph motors available, but the ones I've seen cost a bunch compared to the IronHorse 3600 rpm 2hp motor at $165 shipped. Of course they do have the 3hp 3600 rpm motor for $215 shipped.

Derate the service factor on the motor by 33% and call it a 2hp motor if needed until the service is upgraded to full 3hp rated.

I was fortunate enough to have an extra 240V line that was connected to a hot tub we gave away (came with the house we bought 4 years ago). We didn't use the hot tub anyway. I also have a son that is an electrician that helped me run the line to the garrage into a cut off box. We will be adding a 240V outlet on it for my heat treat oven when we get it finished. Get the VFD, I went with a 3HP motor, they are worth the extra money.

OK, lets stop bickering.

Albin (and the many others with no profile info) - One good reason to fill out your profile is people will know where you are. There are lots of us with spare motors laying around and even big rolls of wire they would like to get rid of. Also, knowing where you are helps with offering other sources of motors.
