Do not try this at home

You know, the thought crossed my mind for the briefest instant, but my son had blanched and I thought he was going to go into shock or something, so I sent him away for the paper towels and the phone rather than the camera so I could pull the knife out while he was in the kitchen.:D However, he had recovered and wanted to see after all.

My dad was a super hardass. One time, my brother and I were with him out cutting firewood in the middle of nowhere when we heard him yelp, chainsaw shut off and him yell for us to get in the truck.

We asked him what happened and he just said "oh, I got a little cut." He drove us home, the whole time carrying on a regular conversation, laughing, driving perfectly fine aside from the jacket he had wrapped around his hand.

He dropped us off and told us to tell my mother it was no big deal and that he'd be back in a little while.

The "little cut" he had was removal of his index finger at the middle knuckle, almost complete removal of his middle finger at the first knuckle (it was hanging on by skin) and the web of his hand between the thumb and index finger was cut through to the bone.

Crazy bastard went to his friends house who was an army medic in Nam' and tried to get him to stitch it up. He made my dad go to the ER.

They put him all back together and aside from loss of feeling in the tips of the fingers, he was OK.

A few years later, I took the first half inch of my finger off with a pipe and a sledge hammer (long, stoopid, story) and I was running around the yard like a chicken without a head.

Same surgeon who peiced my dad back together put my nub back on, saying "Like father like son" the whole time. I wish I had kept my cool like that.:D

Good cut! When they're ready, take those stitches out yourself. It's an experience i recommend everyone try at least once. Feels weird.

I had a doctor take my stitches out for the first time about a year ago because the Mrs. made me. I thin getting them out is worse than getting them in. I'd much rather do it myself.

That's a nasty looking wound you've got there,Boats. You should know better than to turn your back on a Rat!

Shotgunner, taking out stitches is not that bad. I have been dumb enough when I cut my leg to sterilize the wound, inject lidocaine myself and stitch it up myself. Now that was fun.

I know what you mean about dads being tougher then we are. My good ole marine dad ran over my leg when I was 14 (accident, my stupidity). Of course I cried all the way to the ER. All he kept doing is yelling at me for being stupid and telling me to stop crying like a girl. Mind you my ankle was in a partial cast for 2 weeks and I missed 2 months of track because of that small injury, lol.

I am not going to ask how you figured that one out:eek::D

yeah the tanning deal can be found in another thread. not sure the name it's burried. there's like 300 some posts. it's amusing.

:eek:i don't think i could stitch myself. the mr's stitches were in btwn his toes! he was NOT happy i made him go to the er that day!

I've given myself a few stitches before, ended up with a pretty cool infection because I wasn't smart enough to sterlize the needle. Using old fishing string prolly wasn't the smartest choice either.

I just hate having anyone else do any medical procedures on me, rather do all but the worst myself.

All goes back to this butcher podiatrist I went to to get an ingrown toenail removed. Bastard injected me with whatever to numb me up and then disappeared for almost an hour before coming in and cutting my toenail in half and ripping out the infected half with a pair of pliers long after the numb feeling had subsided.

Ever since then, I remove the toenails myself, I even have a little "tool kit" all set up for it. Stitches, splinters, injections, tooth cleaning....I do it all.

I'm quite the ghetto surgeon.

LOL, I hear ya.

I just steal from my own office supplies like sutures, betadine, etc.... I have stitched up many friends on the boat when fishing... and lets not talk about pulling out hooks. My favorite. Worst one I had was a gold spoon with treble hook in a friend's kid head.

as for the podiatrist, what the hell did he inject you with. Lidocaine should have easily taken care of the pain in under 2 hours and bupovicaine will last almost 8 hours... did he use saline just to piss you off?;)

A pair of wire cutters would have served you better for the task ;)

I'm glad folks post these oppss's, keeps the memory of our own gliches fresh for our combined benefit.

I've never cut myself deep enough to have to get stitches. (Knock on wood). I did cut myself a little bit the other day with one of my fixed blades. Being a dumbass... but nothing bad at all, didn't even hurt.

Wow, boats. That's a helluva cut. I'm glad your son wasn't traumatized or anything. Hopefully he'll learn to be a little more careful with knives when he's older. :D

Mr. Shotgunner - Yeah, my father is much tougher than I. Although he hasn't had an injury as bad as your father, he did manage to get the teeth of a hammer sunk into his scalp. He was bleeding quite a bit and was cursing. He called me over, we were on a job, and told me to get some salt. He sat down and told me to push it into the cuts. He grimaced, took the pain, drank some water and got back to work. After that, I didn't complain about work for a long time, haha.

I had a pretty bad cut trying to cut those damn zipties, it was a bundle of electrical wire and I had to get rid of the ziptie. I coudn't cut straight down with the risk of cutting the wire. so I got the tip of my opinel (razor sharp, btw) in a little space that I managed to fit and pushed up, the knife slipped and hit me between my thumb and index finger on the other hand.
it went pretty deep, and im still recovering.
ouch!
I always remember that moment with fear, knowing that it could have been a lot worse.
