Do not wash your Spyderco Chinese folder in the washing machine. (pics-**cringe**)

Ugh!

I can't believe this happened. Went for a walk last night, and left my Sypdie Lum in ZPD clipped to my shorts on the floor when I went to bed. Well, they were run through the washing machine and the dryer. (see below) It seems as though it held together through the wash, but the heat of the dryer must have loosened the screws, because the whole thing came apart. I mean the whole thing. I am guessing that the main screw released first because the smaller screws that hold the two scales together are stripped (actually it is probably the alluminum scales that are stripped, being the softer of the two).

Anyway, I'm sick. The whole thing went back together easy enough. I put some blue loctite on the two small screws that are stripped but it isn't making a difference. They function more as push pins now, and I expect that before too long they will have worked themselves out.

Any tips for securing these two screws would be appreciated. I had considered a tiny speck of jb weld in the place of the thread locking compound, but I don't want it to be quite that permanant.

For your... ehhh, (dare I say enjoyment?). I present my stupidity of the week. (below that I included some pictures that i shot of it earlier in the week).

Guess if I am going to spend money on a high end knife that would be the criteria for me (if I should even make the mistake and it goes through the wash.)

I know people who left their Glock pistol in the wash and it came out fine.

Yeah, but...

I think an endura is a better comparison to a Glock. I would reckon an endura would survive a trip through a cement mixer.

When things get nicer and smoother (and sexier, I might add), something gotta give. You can't really compare a Jeep to a Porche.

I bought the thing to use it until I broke it. I just didn't expent to "broke" it so quick. Truthfully, I'm kinda glad it happened. it gained some character, and I don't have to worry about scratching it anymore.

The fact that it's back together and riding in my pocket right now is quite a testimony to the quality of the parts in it. I am happy with it still.

ETA: I do wish I had put some thread locker on the main bolt when I got it though. If that bolt had held, all would have been well. That was the "keystone" if you will to the structure.

Not as bad as I thought. You would think the zdp would stain from the laundry

soap and the water exposure. The dryer didn't even beat it up that bad either.

You must have a new set of machines. If that happened to me It would be

worse off I'm darn sure of it.Oh nice pics though>:D

Yeah, I would have thought the ZDP would have stained from the exposure. I think that stuff is more rust resistant than we give it credit for.

You're right, they are new machines, too.

As for the rest of the load. I haven't had the heart to check yet. I do know that that the scale and clip were still firmly attatched to my columbia shorts when it was all over with.

ETA: The blade was, to quote Sal, "scary sharp."

I keep it at 40 degrees, but I am able to put an edge on the ZDP that is crazy. It will shave facial hair, and will whittle a regular hair. Fun stuff.

After it's little ride, it was still somewhat shaving sharp, but nowhere near like it was before. A few minutes on teh sharpmaker should have her good as new.

My ZDP endura has been through the washer and dryer a number of times with no visable results. VG10 knives too, no problem there either. I typically find out about it by hearing banging noises in the dryer. Joe

If the treads in the scale are stripped the best "fix" would be larger screws. Think perhaps STR might be able to help you. Certainly worth asking.

Contact spyderco I am sure Sal will make it right.
WTF? How could you possibly consider this something Sal would need to "make right".

I have to say that I am honestly shocked at that result. I would have guessed that the knife would have banged up the dryer not the other way around.

Did you do it on the 'delicate cycle'? If not, there's the problem:D.

Sorry to see those pics...good luck.

You know I am forever ignoring the damn fabric care labels on my knives :p

ETA: on a serious note. What about red loctite?

There are still some threads left in the scales. I have carried it all day now, and the screws seem to be holding pretty well. Used it to cut some fruit at lunch, and played with it a good bit.

If I use red loctite to secure the scale screws, can't I break it free with a quick touch from a soldering iron if the unlikely need arises for it to be taken apart for service?

Great pics .............. :D
Glad you found all the parts and got it going again .....

YIKES! But...

Don't you just love the smell of a freshly laundered knife? There's just something about Downy that makes everything smell comfy.

A real world torture test. I'm sorry that you had to experience this loss. I don't see any obvious chipping of the S30V blade and this is good news. And, you've discovered a way to dismantle your knives without conventional specialized tools.

I washed & dried my brass, pocket-watch style, compass the other day with the result that the locking cover came loose. I have a blind spot when it come to checking my 5th pocket sometimes.
