Do shave with your EDC?

I cut myself with a normal razor from time to time, no way in hell I'm taking one of my knives to my throat. :D

Kyle.

I'll confess to shaving my face with a freakishly sharp SAK a couple of times quite a while ago just to prove that I could. Parts of my right arm gets a shave fairly often.

Dave

i do regularly with my kershaw needs work and once with my superfly, that was a bad idea

So does anyone else shave with their regular EDC? I'm not sure why I get such a big kick out of it; I guess I feel like I'm Crocodile Dundee or something.

Just wondering if I'm the only one...

OOPS! response deleted. Wrong forum for true thoughts to be posted.

Used a Braun basic electric shaver for 10 years before I switched to a Gillette Mach 3 3 years ago.

I was thinking whether a straight razor makes sense in terms of upkeep (no blade replacement needed) but I haven't learned to strop yet :o Should I even think of getting one?

Besides I haven't got a sharpener with 2000 to 8000 grit sizes to bring my EDC to shaving sharpness (600 grit is reasonable enough for my EDC tasks but not shaving):foot:

double edge razor for the win :D

That is how I do it, though it not used as often but for touch up since I grew a beard. Growing a beard has shaved me about 3 hours a week of shaving minimum and plenty of saved razor burns as it typically takes a couple of shaves a day with multiple passes with most razors.

Never used a knife though. My hands are not steady enough.

i make straight razors and knives
i dont cut cardboard with a razor and dont shave with my folder

and while i know some of you guys make some really sharp edges. i want to know how many have shaved with a well honed and stroped straight razor (so you can tell the difference between a "razor sharp knife " and a true razor)

i see no use in a EDC being truly razor sharp as the first thing that you would cut would wreck the edge

Well, the way I see it, an EDC won't be "truly razor sharp" as a straight razor ever will be unless you profile the EDC's edge to be like a razor. I mean, I don't know that much about straight razors, but I've had a shave from one, and I know that the edge thickness and angle are extremely small compared to an EDC's grinds. So of course it won't cut up cardboard without taking damage, but it will shave hair much better than anything can.

The thing is that not everyone requires the same level of sharpness for a good shave. So for me, for example, a 30 degree inclusive angle can shave my face comfortable, and it can also cut cardboard without taking damage. However, I'm sure if I gave my knife to a barber, his customers would complain about either discomfort or a shave that wasn't close, or at the best case scenario, that it's not as good as shave as they're use to.

When you think about it though, most store-bought razors don't even give a shave as well as a straight-razor, so I don't find it that much of a stretch that someone could have a shave from a 30 degree inclusive knife and not know the difference. I just know if I was a barber, I would go for the one that was for sure to be comfortable and close for everyone.

Besides, I'm only 21 and my facial hair isn't that coarse or dense. So a comfortable, smooth shave for me could be a terrible shave for another.

Either way, I wasn't trying to insinuate that it was as capable of a straight-razor. Because as you said, if it was, it wouldn't hold an edge for squat. However, for my needs, there's really not that much of a difference. The shave is just as comfortable as a straight-razor, I'd say the difference is how close the shave gets.

I don't do it regularly, but I have shaved a few times with my Kershaw Cyclone. For me, though, it's just not a convenient method of shaving, so I don't do it anymore.

schick slim twin does just fine for me...the day i start shaving with a folder is the day i shoot myself.

I haven't really been able to get mine sharp enough to do that comfortably (for me, at least.) However, the girlfriend has used one of my EDC's to do spot touch-ups on her legs when we're going somewhere.

I wish i had the nerve. i keep my edc hair popping, and try to maintain hair-whittling, though i don't know if even this is suitable for face-shaving.

I have to shave daily, and keep a beard so i use the gillete fusion proglide thing for all the non-beard spots. I've been thinking about switching to a straight razor, but it seems like a whole 'nother territory. but heck daily shaving doesn't make for long blade longevity, and at $9 a blade it gets old.

I do strop my blades once or twice before throwing them out though, can't really tell if it makes a difference.

give it a try man, it's awesome and cheaper than gilletes!
Check out my youtube channel, there's a review on a straight razor by thiers issard there.

I can do a touchup for my whiskers with a hair whittling knife at about 12 degrees per side, but then it stops. And it won't even be a close shave. No way I can shave my whole face with a knife without soap.
