Do the folks on the porch pay attention to blade steels ?

Do you pay attention to the what steel your blade is made of

While I'm fascinated by ferrous metallurgy (admittedly of the Cliff Notes variety) I'm heavy into 1095 given my traditionalist leanings so far. As I start thinking about customs that will likely change. That said, I don't ever see myself buying no-name steels, nor the newest super-steels.

I guess that is one of the main differences between moderns and traditionals. Steel choice dominates the modern knife market while cover choice is more prevalent in the traditional world. For example, I have;

6 versions of the GEC #38 Farmer Jack, all in different cover materials

6 versions of the Spyderco Military, all in different blade steels

Which choice is better? Beats me. All I can say with any definition is that I would LOVE!!! the opportunity to purchase a stag handled Military or an Orchard Gem in S90V. Sadly, neither is going to happen....

This has been a useful site for me. Under "Steel", you can click "Steel chart" or "Steel element information. On the Steel chart, you can select up to five steels, then click "compare" to get a side by side comparison of the alloys, or just click on the name of the steel for alloy information on that steel. The other chart explains what effect the elements have on the finished steel. It's been handy for me.

Good post. I refer to those charts occasionally myself. I'm usually looking for chromium and carbon content but the "compare" option is a great feature.
