Do you carry a firearm in the great (recreational) outdoors?

I carry my 629 crossdraw in a uncle mikes holster...very comfortable even in the truck..

Nat'l forest's/BLM land, open carry...and yes, being sober and polite helps...

Nat'l/State parks, Yaqui slide holster on a thin nylon belt, under elastic band shorts or sweats.

Back pack or behind the truck seat works well dependant on the situation or firearm...

(3 years ago, Yellowstone, 5 guns/3 loaded, I come around a turn and there's 3 big/buff/blonde guys in Hawaiian shirts blocking traffic along with the Park Ranger's...out in the field, Marine One & Two...apparently Billy-Bob Clinton was vacationing in Jackson Hole and wanted to go horseyback riding in the park...ahhh, I had my moment and passed..lol)

In camp, in the tent or in the truck...

Savage Scout is pretty good. Utilitarian but accurate, lightweight and handy. Mine has a Burris 2 3/4 with Luepold rings. A lot of fun. It needs a trigger and bolt job, though. This style of scope mounting gives a fast sight picture at closer ranges, very user-friendly. I will check out those web sites.:)

Always! Usually a Ruger Security Six w/4" barrel, 357 Magnum in a Kramer horsehide belt scabbard. And always carry "snakeshot".

A Glock 23 with an extra pre-ban clip or a Ruger SP101 come with me when hiking or camping. Heck, one comes with me when strolling to the 7-11 for Doritos. I'm looking at .22 rifles to take on longer trips.

rjones,

With regard to .22 pack rifles, I've got the Henry semi-auto survival rifle (Armalite store-in-stock type) and the stainless Springfield M6 .22/410 break-open model (mentioned by another poster). The Henry shoots acceptably well, but the Springfield is astonishingly accurate for such a simple rifle. I've heard they have a new version out that will supposedly handle 45LC through the 410 barrel.

By the way, welcome aboard and please visit often!

DWK-

I have the same model as you do. Didn't that M6 also come in .22 Hornet-over-.410 option? Always wished I had picked up one in that caliber...

depending on the length of stay & area I'm in, I carry a:

Glock 20 (in bear country)

S&W 610 (hunting)

Ruger MK-II Gov. Target (all other times in the woods...)

For backpacking, I carry a 3" Ruger SP 101 in 357. It's a nice compromise between weight and power. I feel reasonably safe with it in black bear country and I'm even less worried about the two legged varmints when I have it.

With backpack on, I carry it in a an Eagle Creek pouch hooked to SnuggerStrap, so it rides right in front and the SnuggerStrap takes the weight off the shoulders. I don't think they make the SnuggerStrap any more. It was designed to carry heavy cameras without putting the weight on the neck. But there are probably similar things out there.

Guncollector,

Yes, it was available with the Hornet (and still is, I believe). For years the Springfield catalogs also listed a 22 mag option, but I never heard of one actually making it to a gun store.

I'm thinking of buying another M6, this time with the new stock/trigger configuration, the 22 Hornet barrel, and the rifled 410 barrel that is supposed to handle 45 LC rounds. However, I'll probably still use the 22/410 more often. That 22 is awfully handy for popping grouse, ptarmigan, and bunnies.

My first target with the M6 got mailed to Springfield with a thank you note. After a fouling shot, it put five rounds in about a one inch hole at 50 yds. (off a bench). Hard to believe with a short bare barrel, fairly primitive sights, and a funky trigger mechanism. It will shoot minute-of-bunny at 100 yds, but I've never needed to try that long of a shot.

What was it that Jeff Cooper said? Something about how a true hunter never boasts of how long his shot was; but rather of how close he got to his quarry. :)

Guncollector I live by Coopers rule about getting close..Much more satisfying to get close enough to see the heart beat thru the skin of the intended prey before the shot.....

I feel very safe with my springfield m-14 with a couple extra 20 round clips of fullmetal jacket and a colt sidearm and oh yeah this is a knife forum also carry my randall

Howdy, gentlemen. You have a nice site here.

Glad to see so many gun-toters on our public land. I have the SA M6 Stainless Scout in .22H I like it a lot. I have shot many practice shots thru it with the inexpensive Win 55 gr. FMJ-BT bulk bullets. Under 2" groups at 100 yards. Very nice. Reloading for the .22 Hornet is rewarding and pleasant. Compared with my H&R Topper, the Scout's full-choked .410 bore shot patterns were skeet! :(

Guns in the outdoors? By all means. If you aren't hunting, then handiness trumps most considerations.

All good advice.

Cheers

Hey longbow50-

Have you ever seen the effects of .45 JHP (or its terminal effects) on a hog? I haven't, so I'm curious.

Interesting sidenote, most No. Cal. guides recommend all FMJ, or at the very least alternating FMJ & JHP in a backup sidearm.

I havn't used it on a hog yet. The longbow kills em dead. The round was recommended by the local gun shop owner for the acp on hogs. In all honesty, I've heard the caliber is a little wimpy for hogs and I figure that's why he recommended the talon. It's a nasty round when it penetrates. Tears everything all to heck. I found that out when I capped a coyote with the round. Course, yotes aren't too tuff. I've never hunted with a guide service. I've heard they have their perferences as to caliber and rounds used. Hows hoggin up North?

I always carry my Llama .357 Revolver in a holster on my right hip, right next to my Vic Swiss Champ. I've never had to "use" it, but heck, it gives me peace of mind:D

Unfortunately, when on safari here in South Africa, you may not carry a firearm into the reserve. We often go on foot with a game ranger in Lion territory!!!! This makes me veeeeeeeeery uneasy knowing that my life and that of my family is dependant on a game ranger with a rifle.

I don't know about you, but I would prefer not to have to use my Aitor Bucanero survival knife on a Lion that pounces on me!!!!!!! For one, they would knock you off your feet with their sheer size and weight, and secondly, besides their very large teeth, they have even larger claws. If this does not finish you off, then surely their bad breath will....peeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!

So yes, I do carry my gun when in the outdoors hiking etc. You never know when you come across unsavoury (human) elements that are opportunistic.
