Do you carry a firearm in the great (recreational) outdoors?

The great outdoors and the great indoors! If I am awake I am carrying a sidearm. I have a Ruger single acton Blackhawk that I call my "woods" gun. It will handle anything I can think of and with a birdshead grip and 4"plus barrel, it carries well.

Depends on where I am, who I'm with, what I'm doing, what I anticipate posing a problem, and how much gear I'm willing to pack.

I'm always packed, and the caliber increases in direct proportion to the size of - and number of legs on - the critter. To remain topical:

My family spends a LOT of time in the mountains, and I hunt Antelope, Deer, Elk, and Bear during their respective seasons. Where I'm hiking/camping (and how I got there), and where/what I'm hunting, all makes a difference in what I take along. Rarely, for example, do I carry a handgun on a hunt unless I'm tagged out and just hauling meat. We've had a recent spate of bear trouble in some of my regular wilderness haunts, last year we had a rutting 6x6 in our summer camp, so the possibility of an issue is always there.

We always have a "heavy" rifle in camp, we always have a couple of handguns available, we always have at least one .22lr for plinking, camp meat and educational purposes.

this is alicia, j.p.'s wife, if you're planning a trip to Texas you'll need a larger caliber. the feral pigs here are thick as theives and they can be agressive. bring a .44 mag and use a .240 grain wad cutter.
