Do you carry too many knives?

OK, true story. Nov. 9th last year (Monday) I dumped my bike. Didn't have the knee armor yet, so I banged my right knee up pretty bad. Tuesday morning was *pain*, so I EMailed Sensei and said I was gonna be a no-show at the regular Dojo session that night, but that I was mostly OK.

So he tells the class, and one guy calls out "I'll bet the CHP were picking up knives for hours!".

ARG!

I do tend to run low on pockets. Crawford KFF in my right pocket with my Micra. SwissTool in a horizontal belt pouch. On weekends I sometimes also carry my left handed Kevin Gentile modified AFCK.

My answer to the "Too Many Knives" concept is to specialize.

Two blades is my daily carry with two more close at hand in my vehicle. I will vary the blades depending on the circumstances and places I plan to cover each day (either urban or rural). For instance if heading into high crime places or unfamiliar city streets (something that happens often enought) I'll add a concealed FB to my favorite folders -- a Commander and a Genesis.

I figure 2-3 knives is adequate because I do have other ways to fight if necessary and you should never, ever be 100% dependant on ANY tool or weapon!

Always three. One utility, one defensive and a Simonich neck knife for whatever. In my ever present backpack a Swiss army knife and I have plans to add a CS Recon tanto. I'd also like to add a good fixed blade for IWB carry.

I think that as long as the weight doesn't prevent me from walking upright, there's no such thing as too many

Standard carry for me is my Stryker in right front pocket, Endura II in left front pocket for a reverse-grip draw, BM 44S bali in horizontal belt sheath behind right hip, REKAT Fang hung inverted from inside right pocket in coat for right-hand reverse-grip draw, and a Gerber Guardian Back-up hung inverted under the weather flap of my writing bag...oh yeah, there's also the Swissbuck SAK that gets tossed into whichever pocket has room left after keys, money clip, change, etc, etc.

TOOOmuch knives ?
There is never such a thing !
But for comfortable carry I limit the total weight to 50 kilos (sorry: 110 lbs).
And I never come near magnets !

Happy cutting,
Frank

3 to 5 everyday. More on weekends. Reason?
1 *clean* one for food, 1 small one to use so as not to inimadate the faint of heart, 1 rough and ready utility-large size, 1 rough and ready utility -medium size, and a spare or 2 just in case.

Hmm, used to carry more on occasion, but nowadays down to two, usually (not counting the Micra in left front pocket).

I generally carry one larger knife, and one smaller, and try to have at least one of them be something that I wouldn't mind using for messy cutting jobs. One clips to right front jeans pocket, the other IWB clipped at right front, just behind first belt loop on the jeans.

These days, my Krait is nearly always one of the two (Darrel told me it was meant to be used, but I had trouble believing him -- now it's hard to imagine not having it constantly nearby).

The other knife lately has been rotating amongst a Spydie Goddard Jr., MoD Hornet, Boye Eagle Wing, and Baby Sebenza, often with one or more of the others in my backpack, in case my fingers get itchy to play with something else during the day.

I usually have some sort of vague justification in the back of my head ("one's serrated and the other's plain", "one's pointy and one's not", or some such), but it really comes down to a) having one knife that's willing to sacrifice itself to cutting messy things in order to protect its more shiny mate, and b) having something smaller to use if I'm worried about bystanders fainting when I pull out something that actually shows up on radar, rather than merely setting off the metal detectors in neighboring cities.

Besides, when I carried more than two, there was that constant rattling...

I try to keep it reasonable at two or three in the warmer months but in the winter with all those extra pockets the number generally climbs a bit. I have the ol key chain Micra all the time. A BM Panther at work. Lg.Vaquero in the evening. Then there`s the coat pockets,Gerber Multilock outside right,Stiff Kiss inside left. So when I`m on my way to work and carrying a few handmades I work on over "lunch" the number can climb to seven or eight. Plus gun, flashlights etc. it`s no wonder I sometimes feel like a walking hardware store!

My wife told me I was carrying too many...I didn't believe her until I unloaded:

Emerson Commander
BM Stryker
MT DA SOCOM
Large Sebenza
Spyderco Remote-Release
Mission MPF-1 (new addition)
Leatherman PST-II
REKAT Hobbit Fang
Leatherman Micra

(Military BDU's cover too many!)

Dave

Too many knives....hmmm. No such thing. CS XL voyager tanto primary, I lost my micra(sniff), a small Puma, getting a BM Stryker, CS recon tanto when animals might get in the way. The stryker will be the one that I take out in public, so no one questions (specifically people with badges) the legality of my 5" bladed voyager.
