they cant be blamed for being cautious, but there is a point where it gets rediculous. as I had stated, there's that school that has metal detectors. I mean, come on! Sure, it might save a life, but it creates a hastle in the meantime for something that is relatively unlikely.
As for zero tolerance, if someone really did snap then anything can really be a weapon in that person's mind. a chair, a pen, whatever. the threat still remains in the person, it can just be accelerated by a weapon. A gun is different though because it would increase that threat dramatically as the reach would be increased.
Now if someone was carrying a pocket knife on them at school, would that file under zero tolerance? Because a pocket knife, or any knife, can be very useful at times. As I said before, I usually have to lend people whatever I have on me in science class because of a lack of scissors or other cutting mechanisms. Nothing bad ever comes out of that.
Its really just a matter of a few idiots ruining it for everyone. you give one kid a gun, he'll respect it. you give another kid a gun, he'll disrespect it. there'll always be people that arent exactly sane and those who are just plain stupid as hell. If you really feel threatened by being in school because of your classmates, then do you feel threatened out in the world? the only real difference is age and maturity, but in high school its not exactly kindergarteners running around with weapons. Teachers = police (police probably wont do anything unless you pull a knife out or use it in a threatening manner), students = your normal citizen.
(just to clarify, are we talking about knives in general or knives of legal size?)
