The length limit in CA is 2", but I still carry one daily...from the bedroom to the living room, and around the family room.

If it weren't illegal, I would definately carry a bali as my regular carry. I like slim blades for utility anyway.

I usually carry around this kabutan/knife thing in my left pocket (I usually just swing it around by the keychain ring out of the sheer boredom that is synonomous with school), my swiss army knife (which is breaking

), and this lighter/OTF combo. No-one ever gives me trouble about it, and if they do, they're all under 2.5" and legal, so i win

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but anyweapons at school are a no no. Lighters, switchblades, SAK's, kubatons, balis, etc should not be carried IMO.

Really...Thats really interesting. I always thought schools had a zero tolerance attitude towards knives etc. I guess not.

This is taken from "Douglas County School District 2000-01 Student Code of Conduct and Discipline" (I'm just gonna post the part about knives)
Knives. Knives include a fixed-blade with a blade that measures longer then three inches in length or a spring-loaded knife or pocketknife with a blade longer then three and one-half inches; the knife blade will be measured from the hilt to the top of the blade.

There is a lot more concerning firearms and what happens if you get caught with weapons and who can search you etc. but that wasn't relevant.

I always look into these kind of things; the rules (when broken down) say that you cant have anything over 2.5" IF it is threatening to people. law just says 2.5". when it's not broken down, anything under 2.5" is fine. And I usually find a use for each knife every day (usually during science class with my crazy science teacher who likes to burn things)

I dunno about high school and stuff, but yeah I thought with the recent events that there was zero tolerance.. I mean they suspended honour students for having SAKs accidentally in their glove comparrtments (whcih is to say all non honour students shoudl be hanged for bringing a knife)

In college though the rule is set but pretty lax.. I htink the only time you shoudl be wary of being searched or 'looked over' is when you go to frat parties.

other than that I carry my 12" millenium bowie on my spinal rig for fun sometims with no problem

original question.. I USED to carry a bali and a folder all day but I have lately been getting into custom fixed blades so I switch off from the bali and the fixed blade. I shodl get back to carrying balis constantly so I can practice again but I don't need to weigh down my pants any more.

see, our school actually tries thinking and not jumping onto the "EVERYONE IS GOING TO KILL US!" bandwagon. I mean, how many killings have ever occured at my school? zero. how many have occured in schools and by peoples under 18 around here? zero. Now if you get caught with a gun, that is COMPLETELY different. I like to think that the authorities around here have enough respect for the student body to believe that they wouldnt try to kill someone. We actually run on a first name basis at our school. (by the way, those are the only good things about my school
wink.gif
)

That and I live in the most boring place in the world where nothing remotely dangerous ever happens. There is a school south of us that does have very very strict rules; hell, they even have metal detectors but then again that school does have a bad reputation.

I also do think i'm responsible enough to know when and when not to pull out a knife of illegal size. and if I am carrying something of relative size (but i've never carried anything over 5" except my sword, but I never leave the house with that) its almost always out of sight. When I go into Massachusets I always take off my bali's, just to avoid any trouble.

Well, Darth - I don't really think you can say "I mean, how many killings have ever occurred at my school?" If you consider Columbine, do you really think anyone had been killed there before the shooting? Even with knives, I'm sure people have been stabbed at school. Can the school really be blamed for being cautious? You never know when someone can explode and do something crazy. Remember when that 14 year old kid who 'never held a gun before' commited a school shooting, then blamed it on Doom? His friends said they would never have seen him doing something like that but he did, didn't he? I support the zero tolerance rule; I don't want my future kids to get hurt, especially at school. But what the majority of people don't understand is that knives are tools, and it's the people who are dangerous, not the knives.

they cant be blamed for being cautious, but there is a point where it gets rediculous. as I had stated, there's that school that has metal detectors. I mean, come on! Sure, it might save a life, but it creates a hastle in the meantime for something that is relatively unlikely.

As for zero tolerance, if someone really did snap then anything can really be a weapon in that person's mind. a chair, a pen, whatever. the threat still remains in the person, it can just be accelerated by a weapon. A gun is different though because it would increase that threat dramatically as the reach would be increased.

Now if someone was carrying a pocket knife on them at school, would that file under zero tolerance? Because a pocket knife, or any knife, can be very useful at times. As I said before, I usually have to lend people whatever I have on me in science class because of a lack of scissors or other cutting mechanisms. Nothing bad ever comes out of that.

Its really just a matter of a few idiots ruining it for everyone. you give one kid a gun, he'll respect it. you give another kid a gun, he'll disrespect it. there'll always be people that arent exactly sane and those who are just plain stupid as hell. If you really feel threatened by being in school because of your classmates, then do you feel threatened out in the world? the only real difference is age and maturity, but in high school its not exactly kindergarteners running around with weapons. Teachers = police (police probably wont do anything unless you pull a knife out or use it in a threatening manner), students = your normal citizen.

(just to clarify, are we talking about knives in general or knives of legal size?)

I used to carry my custom bowie once in a while but not since I got my 42, it's much lighter in the pocket. I carry it every day with a spyderco police as a back-up, and a sog tomcat in a belt sheath. It's a nasty world we live in, why take chances.

Just my 2¢, but when I was in high school 84-88, it was very common for
guys including my self to carry Buck knifes on our belts. No one was ever stabbed.

Yeah, but times change. I'm not saying anyone here gets shot or stabbed, but I used to know a bunch of unstable people that I went to high school with.
