Do you carry?

I carry a slipjoint at work, on my free time usually 2 knives, A slippie and some kind of locking one hander (depends on what I'm doing). when in the field camping or hunting a slippie and a fixed blade. Bottom line.... a slippie 100% of the time:thumbup::D

I love my Buck 303 Cadet. Had it for 22 years. I'd love to add a Case Swayback Jack to my rotation.

Still, I also regularly carry a couple of non-traditional knives, including the Kershaw OD-1 which is in my pocket right now.

I carry a Barlow and I carry a frame-lock tacti-cool. I used the slippie more throughout the day. Since my wreck I will not leave the house without a one-hander.

Always have a stout one-hander, these days, a Combative Edge M1. Have been thinking going to a more sheeple-friendly trad-type nonlocking folder in addition. Maybe a Laguiole or a Paul. My Leatherman takes care of the dirty work.

I have collected a few non-traditional knives over the years as well. I have not carried one as EDC in a long time. The exception is when the work of the day requires a heavier blade then the usual thin blades of my SBJ or med stockman. I have sort of traded the one handed knife clipped to the pocket for a multi-tool on the hip. The trade works well for me at this point.

A well made Traditional folder seems to have a little soul, even production ones.
i have a number of Tactical style knives, but even the super slick exceptionally well made ones, like my Larry Chew, or J.W. Smith, do not give me the sense of warmth and friendship that i feel with my Traditionals.
i marvel at the exceptional talent and skill, and know if my life depended upon it, these Tacticals would never let me down. but they seem like cold perfection, and i prefer the warm and comforting companionship of Traditionals.

in city while i'm working usually carry a one hander since i'm pulling a machine. in rural areas or ranch carry folders. if one is walk hunting with a slung rifle clip knives rub the stock. not only does this scrath the stock it makes more noise than desired.clip knives are for convience but traditionals are for cutting. try to skin a cottontail or squirrel with something other than a muskrat or stock & you have more work than you need.

I've pretty much always used slipjoints. One time I bought a one hander from Wal-mart though, some cheap metal thing with skelatonized handles but no scales so if some skin or a finger slipped in there (which happened) when you were closing it, the blade would hit it, which is always fun.

It was kinda fun for a little while, flicking it open repeatedly but as a knife, I didn't care for it. I know it's not a Spyderco or anything but still, I just prefer a smaller blade on a pocket knife and I always like to have an extra blade or two, or maybe some tools like a SAK.
Oh and I just don't like clips, I've never had trouble reaching into my pocket a little to get my knife, so why stick it on the edge of your pocket for everyone to see? I understand that for self defense you may need to be quick and so you need it right there and also fast to open but I've never been mugged or fealt like I might be so I don't bother.

I think I could buy a one hander again though, just for the ease of opening in the cold or something, but it would probably be something like one of the larger one handed swiss army knives because believe it or not, I actually prefer the look of a red plastic handled SAK to most if not all the tactical folders out there.

I aint'a gonna lie.. Sure I've carried a 1-hander now and again.. Its been a while though. But even when I did, I was sure to make it a knife with all traditional materials built into her. Never would I carry plastic-composite handled tacti-cool with crapy steel.. IMO, the proverbial tacti-cools have NO soul..

Here is the only two 1-handers I own.. Mr. Prinsloo hand makes the finest 1-handers on the planet, IMO..

I just carried a Benchmade Mini Dejavoo yesterday while I was deer hunting. I used this same knife to field dress a deer a few weeks ago and was impressed with it for that use...Sorry Buck 110 fans, I find some of the modern locking knives with high tech steels much more useful for field dressing:eek: and I've field dressed a lot of deer with a Buck 110 or 112.

I enjoy a few modern knives and "check out" various knives of all types from time to time when they catch my eye, but I only EDC slipjoints.

I've carried a one hander every day since the early 80's, and always will.
Usually a Sebenza or Syderco these days. Alot of time I don't want to set the object (to be cut) down to get a knife out that I can't open and close easy and quickly(just one example). I've never claimed i wasn't lazy.lol.

I also carry a slipjoint every day, and swap them around often. The past week its been an red bone Case Classic USA #62087. Have many I like to rotate.
Also have a fixed blade on about every day, and a neck knife. If it has an edge I love it!

I think I've come full circle at least twice since joining my first knife club back around 1980(three rivers in rome GA). I again find myself more atracted to traditional knives as of late than any other type. So I'll be back to hitting more shows again, though I haven't missed the NKCA show in Dalton in years.

I need to get a pic to post of a few of my favorites...some mid/later 70's Trappers with good stag, and some of our club knife over runs(D.Yellowhorse mini Trappers.) Have many others, but those are my favorites.

I can understand the reasoning behind tacticals and I like them but I enjoy carrying the traditionals more. If I have no pockets on me, I'll sometimes clip on my benchmade 940. Then there's others like the spyderco kiwi which I feel is a blend of traditional and tactical. It's a small wharncliffe backlock but also can be opened one handed. I really like that thing because I get the benefits of tacticals (one hand opening/closing, lock) but carries like a traditional.

I haven't given up on one handers either. I've got a few I like to carry, one is a self lock with mammoth and S30V by Bailey Bradshaw and the other is a new Kansei Matsuno city knife, with amber stag and Devin Thomas damascus. I always have a small slipjoint with me also and on the weekends there's a fixed blade on my belt to top it off. A knife nut for sure.

It's been a few months since I carried any one handers. I tend to gravitate back and forth between both types. Lately though, even when it is a one handed knife it's my UKPK. I just like the simplicity of a slipjoint. The first knife that I really wanted was a Camillus whittler at scout camp. I remember how excited I was when I got it. I still carry it sometimes and when I do it reminds me of that time. That's something I never get with tacti-cool knives. Trying out new steels and locking mechanisms is fun as well but I seem to always come back to traditionals. They were the first knives that I was drawn to and have always been my favorite.

modern one hand knife

you mean a fixed blade ? ;)

I still have a few modern one handed folders... the fixed blade or the slips get the nod majority of the time. If I need it fast , small fixed blade.

I recently rediscovered slipjoints but it wasn't entirely by choice...

For years I was able to wear shorts or jeans with a t-shirt every day and could also get away with carrying whatever style of knife I chose (a Sebenza for the better part of 13 yrs - before that, other one handers). About five months ago I started a new job in an office environment. Gone was the untucked t-shirt; "business casual" is now the uniform of the day and pocket clips are frowned upon (not to mention the fact that a pocket sized popgun has replaced the serious artillery :grumpy: and now resides where a med/large folder used to be clipped). Originally, I had planned to use a Mnandi as my "work knife" but, as luck would have it, I dropped a Mini Copperlock in my pocket on that first day instead. The next thing I knew, I was digging through "THE drawer";) for a few two handers (sans locks...) which I had tucked away. Of course it wasn't long before I started browsing gunshows, the BST forum, the 'bay, etc. for slipjoints. I still enjoy my locking/one handed knives but I find that I don't really miss carrying them all that much - well, not during the work week at least.;)

The best part of all this (aside from my reawakened love for traditional styled knives) is that several of my co-workers are real
country gals who shoot, hunt, and fish so the sight of something like a Slimline Trapper doesn't even raise an eyebrow.:D

It's funny how things work out, sometimes.

I used to have two modern one handed knives, the BM 710 I think I lost to some seatbelt somewhere because it always caught onto it, and I don't really know what happened to the other one.

I've never lost a traditional knife tough. I too favor a fixed blade over a tactical folder.

Never. I bought a couple of the tacticals and I can see the practicality in them, but I just don't like them. They just sit in the drawer. They have about as much to do with real knives---slip joints-- as microwave food has to do with a home cooked meal.

It has been 2 or so months. I probably take Leek in EDC when I buy one in next year... Or Spyderco Dragonfly with VG-10... Something relatively small and handy.

I always have a one-hander and a slipjoint together. I find that such a pairing not only covers just about anything I'd need a knife for, but also allows me the fun of picking two knives to carry each day. :D
