Do You Collect Knives, Or Do You Really Use Them?

Everything I buy is a user, but if its a gift or something with sentimental value then that's when I'm like maybe i should keep this one in the safe.

Camillus BK5 - the knife I've probably used more than any other.

I like to collect knives and I like to use knives. No offense intended to anyone but I have always found it interesting that in order to have been using my knife it somehow need to look all beat up. I have used knives for years that only have a couple of scratches on them.

I use all mine and they're all in pretty good shape.
My Becker's factory finish is a little worn in some places, but still intact.
The only one that looks broken in is my 11 since I stripped it anyways, plus I have used it every day since I bought it.

Hmmm... since most people use their Beckers, ;) maybe stockpiling would be a wonderful idea :)

I Use em or lose em with most of my knives, but I think I have only sold a Becker or 2 and only if I had more than 2.

Also note that you don't see a lot of used Beckers for sale

Thanks Ethan :)

They're tools that I use. I don't collect them, they are tools that I appreciate and enjoy putting to good use.

On rare occasions, I see a picture posted of a Becker that has obviously been used as it was intended...most fotos though, are of pristine knives, with perfect aftermarket scales, elaborate lanyards, and exotic aftermarket sheaths...but they are obviously objects of someone's obsession, and not used as the tools that they are. That said, post up your used, abused, stained, chipped, and dirty knives to prove that you do indeed use your knives as they were intended. Have fun, and the dirtier the better. ;)

Because of where and how I live, my knives probably get used more than most and yet they don't look beat up. I keep my knives cleaned and maintained just like my firearms, my vehicles, my tools. If a patina gets worn I reapply it. If a handle gets damaged I replace it. This reminds me of the city boys who leave all the mud on their trucks after a weekend of camping. Points on the man card for someone who feels they got something to prove?

I've got a really nice classic Firebird in my garage that only sees about 2,000 miles a year. If someone mods, and collects knives as a hobby what's the difference? I enjoy seeing their work. My knives may be users, but they give me ideas on how to improve them. I appreciate what they do and share.

lol, gonna start the same thread in every subforum? How about sharing some pics of your knife use.

Here are some more for ya.

ETA: I use all my knives regardless of cost except for a handful of Opinels. Fancy wood versions, old commomeratives, etc. I have opinel users as well though.

I don't "hard use" my knives unless I am actually going out into the woods. However I carry a couple of blades on me and use them for all kinds of things throughout the day. Just this evening I used my knife to cut a "steak" at supper.

Good post! I can't look at the stash of knives I have obtained over the years without using the word "collection", but the intent was always to find THE blade to go into the woods with me on camping, fly fishing, and hiking trips. When I discovered Bk&T blades I felt like I had finally discovered the right balance in quality steel, rugged design and ergonomics that worked for ME. I bought a BK2 a couple of years ago and then added a BK11, this year has seen the Becker Collection grow to include several more blades including a BK2 and BK7 from the Camillus days. So now I get to choose which Becker blade to grab when I am going into the woods,I guess I am really a collector AND a user of these awesome tools! I have a big trip planned for late summer and I am looking forward to taking my BK16 out for her first trip!

I don't intentionally collect knives. But I find it difficult sometimes to use a custom. I'm slowly getting over this affiction. But as the pile grows, I sure look like a collector. Happened that way with firearms... all shooters until one day I realized the current value on some and decided I was a "collector". I honestly don't see this happening with knives. Unlike firearms, I consider money spent on most knives as essentially flushed down the toilet. I keep flushing however.

I own two Kabar Beckers. I have not used the BK-2 for anything. It just doesn't fit my evolving outdoor knife use. I can see a BK-7 appearing sometime in the next 6 months.
