Do you display them, or keep them hidden?

Displaying them would be like displaying my clothes...not something I feel like doing :D
I own very few knives, so organizing them is not really an issue; I keep them in a drawer, and that's it. :)

In three dwawers of a machinist's chest in MY den, locked. It's been months now since my wife pointed out to me; "Do you know you have over seventy knives!!?" In truth I did not. (know this, that is)
Fortunately she can't tell the difference between an RR and a Schatt & Morgan so whenever I get a new one in the mail,
I tell her it's just one of those cheap Chinese knives, you know, the ones that come in a tube.

I do not display mine, and store a lot in a mates safe, I could only imagine a young lad breaking into our houses ( knife collectors/ users however you describe yourselves ), and then window shopping through the displays-every knife would disappear, easy fast sellers amongst his mates !

I've use three cigar boxes of various sizes and keep those, my sharpening kit, and an old bath towel under an end table by the couch in family room. Decided I never again wanted to "lose" knives in my own home.

They are there not to be hidden but to be convenient. The coffee table becomes my work area when cleaning, sharpening, or oiling. One cigar box has sheath knives. One has scout patterns and SAKs. The last has everything else. If I get to a point, I cant fit my knives in those, something must go before I get something else (I do have space for a ~4 inch bladed puukko and will ensure that space remains reserved for one IF I can ever make up my mind :)). Since summer I've given away two sheath knives, two SAKS, and four other folders. Tomorrow I'll mail the Peanut I gave away here on Friday and give another knife to a gent I was deployed with in Afghanistan. I have room for a few more folders.

Not hidden and not displayed... somehow.

I have a metal-sheet cupboard in my living room. There are several drawers and the knives are in there, sorted after their topics; Modern Knives, Traditional Knives, Fixed Blades, Multitools etc etc.... but everyone who comes to my house can open the drawers, take the looks or take the knives out ... No problemo :p

All mine get displayed as part of my home's decor. They're out for my, and my visitor's, visual pleasure... But, protected by glass to prevent from dust and roaming curious hands :)

And with these couple Rough Riders just gifted to me, I find myself again in need of a new display... they need a home as well ;) I can't get over how much I like these two RR knives... I mean, well made, and their look is very unique :)

Edited to add problem being solved ;)

I give you a lot of credit, for me is a daunting challenge to display, I just can't seem to come up with a theme or pattern, too many choices.

I have display cases I use when I set up tables at the flea market but that's just so I know when one is missing if some one is looking at them, funny how when I go to the flea market to sell stuff I'll bring about 30-40 knives with me and I usually talk my self outta selling them, although I usually wind up giving away 2 or 3 to people who really seem like they want a knife and either can't afford one or it's their first knife and I want to get them started with a decent knife, (I usually ask them to pay it forward and when they replace the one I have them with a better one of their choice by giving the one I have them to someone else).

Always enjoy your displays, keep it up.

Just a question about displaying like you do, are you ever afraid that your making it easier for someone to take your treasures by showing them like that? After Codger's break in and robbery I'm more cautious about what's laying around. Hopefully the dog will keep the thieves at bay or at least convince them that the neighbor down the street is an easier target. ;)

Thanks for the compliment :) As for worry about thieves... In the back of my mind I have fears that everybody has... fears of thieves taking my belongings, fire destroying them... and sure, it's a reality. But, I refuse to live where that fear wins. Things happen, and I have always loved being a collector of different things in my life. That enjoyment not only includes displaying as decor that enhances my feeling when being home, but also makes great conversation for when visitors come over. I do have my firearms locked up and out of sight, but more because society has sooo brainwashed sooo many people into thinking guns are such an evil thing... So I made the decision of putting them away. In a perfect world, I'd be displaying them again as well. Good and bad things do happen, and I just am not going to lose too much sleep over it :)

Oh, and as for thieves... they are better off if I am not home. I am proficient with the use of a handgun, and legally licensed within my state to own one. So, if I am home, the fear will then be placed onto the intruder ;)

I don't have very many, but all mine are for using. I just keep em in a plain cardboard box where I can lift one each day when I get dressed.

It's not that I don't like displays, but I don't display any, for me it would be like pouring a whisky just to look at it.

I'm the same way Duncan. I just know if a slime bag gets in this house a nice set of pocket knives would be exiting the front door in THEIR pockets. If I collected Anvils I'd proudly display them, but pocket knives it's just way too easy for them to grow legs and be gone. So they reside in the gun safe and only the one(s) I'm carrying leave the safe. To me it's just not worth the risk of losing them. I don't really have a collection anyway in reality. I have 8 GEC's and am very proud of each one, but they're certainly far from a collection of any sort.

Two days before my birthday in October our house was broken into and some knives were stolen off of my dresser (clipped folders). After this I wondered about keeping them on the dresser, or hiding them away. I chose keeping them where I can look at and enjoy them. I get pleasure from carrying and using all of my knives, but also like to compare different features at different times, and basically enjoy looking at my collection grow. Anybody can steal whatever they want from us if they are determined, safe or not, and they are just material items that have been accumulated, and will have to be distributed back to the world at some point. I'm not letting the off chance of a repeat theft keep me from living my life the way I want, and I want to look at my collection every single day!

I like the cigar box method even though I hate cigars. Wonder if they have pipe boxes. :p

Bravo, sir.... don't let the bad folks win by taking your enjoyment away! :) I am sorry you had to feel that violated feeling of them entering your home and plundering your belongings :( One takes a walk in the evening, and one may get mugged... but if you enjoy that walk, don't let them take that away from you. I won't be so bold as to leave my home's door wide open, taking the standard precautions... but inside my home I am in my castle, and I'll be darned if I let the punks of this world take away my pleasures with just the fear of them. Again, bravo, sir... and well said :)

I salute you guys but mine will stay in the bags because since 2006, we have had the trucks loaded and running four times as we waited for an evac call. The smoke was thick and the fire crews just a mile or two away.

Like Dickens' character Wemmick in "Great Expectations", I now appreciate "portable property". :D

I do have a little bag that has lots of knives, goodies and some sharpening stuff in it. I keep it handy and rotate favs into it so most of my knives are never neglected. If it thaws out a bit I'll snap a pic.

I keep mine in a small denim bag in a box with my "other" knives. I don't have many and none are collection pieces.

Any local tobacconist will probably give you empty cigar boxes if you ask. Just tell the shop keeper why you want a few. A shop near my office has stacks from which you just pick what you want. That's how I got the 12 3/4" long one for my fixed blades. That's a big cigar box.
