Everyone eventually finds a few knives that really seem to fit them well. When you do find such a knife, do you buy 1 to use and 1 to keep mint? As much as I enjoy using my knives during the day to accomplish various tasks, they all end up getting scratched and worn. I'm considering buying extras of my favorite knives just to fondle and keep mint. I'm also very paranoid that the manufacturers will discontinue the models I'm fond of, and I won't be able to find more later. You certainly can't do this with more expensive knives but, I'm refering to typical "user" knives in the $100.00 or so range. Anyone?

I have two small Sebenzas, one regular, one classic. Not quite the same, but close. I also have two V-nox Settlers. I got the second in case I break or lose the first.

ElectricZombie,
I'm glad to hear that someone else does this. I do it all the time, My Fiancee says that I have a problem, but it just seems like the smart thing to do. I have had the discontinued thing happen to me, and I think that's what started me buying pairs.

I have thought "wow, I like this knife... I need two of these!" many, many times. I really would like to have duplicates of some knives. If a knife has been discontinued or something and I really, really like it and use it a lot, I'd try to get another one. Unfortunately, discontinued knives are sometimes hard to come by, so it's better if you find a model you like while it's still in production and buy two.

All that being said, I don't have too many duplicates. Why? I really think that most knives I buy these days will outlast me. Seriously! This really is "the golden age" for knives - they are more advanced than ever, and in most cases you only need one.

I bought two of the camillus cuda EDC's I liked the first one so much, I just decided to get another. So far I have carried the first one pretty much since the first one in 154cm came out. The second one is still in the box it came in, but I intend to use it if I lose my first, or decide to retire it someday.

Yes...I have 2 Spyderco Police models, and 2 Delicas. I have 2 Buck Nighthawks. And then I have a Camillus/Becker BK-10, a BK-7, and a BK-9, which are all the same knife, only in progressively larger sizes. I also have a SOG Seal 2000 and a SOG Tigershark...Again, pretty much the same knives only progressively larger.

Hell YES I do just what you said, and for just the same reasons. In fact I plan to eventually even do the same for my favorite Glock as well! Nothing like having a backup.

If I have a knife that is a real keeper, and it's not too expensive, I'll always get at least one extra if not more... I buy Moras 3 at a time, same with Opinels. I usually have an extra SAK of the models I use a lot.

Yep,I do it with knives, guns, tools, just about everything. One for using and at least one for spare.tom.

I’ve got a couple of Enduras, one plain edge and one serrated, and a couple of Camillus Marine Combat Knives, one for my collection and one to use.

I have two of my favorite users which are: Fallkniven F1, SAK Climber and Case Yellow CV mini-trapper.

I bought matching BM42s (well, almost "matching," 'cuz one is serrated). The reason was to dull the edge on one for a trainer.

Do you guys plan to use your 2nd knife or do you just keep it in perfect condition for collecting purposes?

I'm thinking about doing just that so I can setup a nice display of mint knives...they are functional art after all...

I only buy a second after it's been discontinued or if I find a really good deal. I only have 3 duplicates.
And after it's discoed you can almost always get a REALLY good deal on it.

I only buy a second for the ones I really like, as a back up if I loose the first...

when a knife gets discontinued, the prices do tend to sag for a while...then they tend to go back up a bit, plus, after 3 to 5 years, they can be a bitch to find in 'new' condition...

That's been my experience anyway, YMMV.

My sole point in buying a second is to make sure I've got one when I want it...today, tomorrow, 5 years from now...

I still can't justify buying another one of the same knife. I'd still rather just get a new knife. For the ones I like very much I tend not to carry them in situations where I think I might use them, and after using them for awhile I retire them and use something else.

I'm used to own two models of the same knife, but in two different sizes. My first combo was a Delica-Endura couple, then Benchmade 975-970 and mini Striker-Striker. I actually own a small regular Sebenza, and I'm waiting for a large one.

My habit is to carry the small as an EDC and the Large when I'm going in the fields or for "defence" purposes. The large is also my replacement knife if the small is not available (for maintenance or sharpening per example). To use the same knife (even the size is different) allow me to have always the same "feeling" : the opening system is the same, the pivot resistance is adjusted to be the same...etc So I'm not surprised by the knife design when I'm opening it.

In addition to that, I don't use the large often, so I protect a specimen of my favourite knife !
:)

I really can't say that it is my favorite knife. But I have three AFCK's. One plain edge 806D2, one 800 combo edge black blade, one full serrated satin. The 806D2 and 800FS usually find their way into my pockets. I don't keep any of them to keep in mint condition, though.

I used to think I needed two of each, just in case something happen to my knife and I was unable to find another just like it. However now I am having trouble rationalizing buying doubles. The cost, at least in my opinion, is far greater than any benefit I get from having a spare that I may never use. I have realized that there will always be quality knives in production that fit my desires and needs. In fact, the knives of tomorrow will most likely have better designs and materials than today. If I lose the one on my hip today, I'll just pick up another quality knife tomorrow. I don't need the same knife for the rest of my life. However you stated you wanted to have doubles for display purposes, which I can understand, however I think knives are best admired when at use.
