Do you ever buy 2 of your favorite knife?

I used to do that. Most recent doing that was with the 921 Switchback because I know it will be all worn out within the next few years.

Unless I can convince the folks at Greco to make some left-handed Raptors...

Rarely if ever, it would cut into the diversty of my accumulation.

I can't see the point in saving a knife that'll never see some kind of use, what's the purpose of a dust collector?

A few years ago I got hooked on the Buck Crosslock Double Blade as my EDC. It just seemed to fit all my needs. Anyway, last year my dream came true... Buck discontinued the DB CrossLock. Why, you may ask is this a good thing? Well, I stumbled on a deal for "my perfect knife" for only $16 each! I ended up with 8 total... Gave a couple away as gifts and kept the rest. I didn't feel bad about making modifications to my EDC, played around with different opening notches and clips. Put a couple away for collectors pieces. Kind of a "have your cake & eat it too":D

I look at the duplicate knives in my collection differently now.

I used to buy two of each knife, but now that my tastes have raised to towards the $150+ range, I simply can't afford to do it anymore. There are too many knives out there for me to be spending that much on a double. The reason I did it in the past is to keep one mint. Now adays, I keep about 5 folders out as EDCs the rest are all kept Mint in displays, so there is no need for seconds anyway in most cases. Now I WILL buy two of the same Microtech, when it comes to different finishes, blade types etc.;)

Back about 1990 I walked into a Pace membership store and saw a new kind of SAK. It had the same types of blades as the Tinker that I always carried, but it had a locking 3.25" blade. I knew that I needed one so I asked the price. They were selling them for around $12.00. I decided that I needed 2 and every other member of my family (including my wife) needed one. So I bought 5 on the spot. My younger son and I are still carrying Adventurers out of that batch. For Father's day this year I bought myself another one.

I sometimes by multiples of a type of knife to compare different blade materials. I have two Buck Vanguard hunting knives. One is a Master Series with BG42 alloy blade and the other is one of the Buckcote models with nitride coating. I have two of the Camillus EDC folders. One with 154CM alloy blade and the other with D2. I have one AG Russell Deer Hunter with D2 alloy blade. I will probably go back and buy one with VG-10 alloy.

I used to buy three at a time; that's a real bear when you buy Microtech D/A USSOCOM Tantos.

I'd look them over with a lighted loupe; if one had even the slightest flaw, that one became the 'carry EDC.'

One the remaining two, the one I had doubts about became the 'spare.'

The remaining knife was 'the pretty one,' and NEVER touched.

I don't do this anymore, but I still have a high-polish Woodard in a locked glass case. Kind of a reminder about crazy this hobby can get.

I have two regular small Sebbies. One is a plain model with a stone washed blade and it is almost always my non-work hours EDC. The other has a unique graphic and a mirror polished blade, it is rarely carried. I don't have the heart to let it get scratched up.

But only when I find one that I think is particurlarly special. I love the Benchmade 941 so much I actually ended up with 4 versions, but am back down to only two. Usually I'll start with a plain version to carry and if I really love it, I'll try to get a special edition to add to the safe collection. In this case I EDC a 941D2CF and keep a 941BC! with the red handle and BC1 blade coating in the safe. I also EDC a Microtech Socom Elite plain edge satin blade and have obtained an all black S90V Tactical version for posterity. I figure that I'm going to one day leave them all to my boy and want to let him see special examples of some of my favorites.

I can't see having 2 of the same exact knives. I have a 154cm and talonite EDC's. I also have a BM 720 and a 721 which are pretty close in basic design, different handle material and blade shape. There are just too many different knives out there for me to have exact duplicates.

2 Benchmade Mini AFCK's.
2 AlMar SERE 2000's
3 Delica's (3 seperate versions, doesn't really count.)
2 Microtech Mini Socoms

For the very favorites...TRIPLES.

If it gets discontinued, and you've lost/had stolen/broken/whatever the 1st one, back-up #1 comes into play. Then, you've got back-up #2 moving into the batter's box. Of course, that leaves back-up #2's spot open, so really, you should get FOUR of your very favorite...

...:(

Two Spyderco Ladybug IIs - I like to carry this knife when I don't have my larger Rescues. They are discontinued, and I would be surprised if a similar knife is reintroduced.

Two LM Micras - These presumably will be replaced by the Squirt S4. I have an S4 too, but I like the Micra enough to want a spare in case one gets lost or damaged.

I don't have that kind of cash, and wouldn't buy doubles if I did. If a company discontinues a blade there will always be time to buy another on an online retailer or one on e-bay years after.

The one thing I do pertaining to doubles though: If a knife that I have comes out in an updated version, or variation, I will buy it.

Yep, I always wanted an Mike Irie stag handled Sport 500. I finally called him up and got one. Sweet little knife....A few months later I got another one off of ebay for half the price I paid to mike. Score !!:D
That's my only double for now...but I'm always looking for lightfoots and wouldn't hesitate to double up on the few I have.

Ditto what AntDog said. A quality knife is going to outlast you. If you're prone to losing things or if you're one of those folks who likes to use their knives as hammers, screwdrivers, pry bars, then maybe you should buy two.

I admit that the thought of buying a pair has crossed my mind a time or two with certain knives, but common sense always prevailed. I use knives and enjoy trying different designs and steels. I don't collect them though.

I do so for several reasons. For some knives I keep spares in case something happens to one and others are so useful that I buy a few especially if I can get a good deal on them. For example, I have 4 Victorinox Recruits, 2 Wenger SAKs similar to the Recruit, and 2 Victorinox Tinkers. One goes in my pocket, another in my desk at home, one in my desk at work, and the rest in survival kits. I also have extras for my Recon Tanto and Bonifacio Bolo which I keep in my car.

Ever seen the movie where Mel Gibson is compelled to buy Catcher in the Rye every time he sees it? I'm like that with Opinels,I'll buy six at a time when I see 'em. I have six #7's and four #8's two #6's and on and on.
