Do you ever take along a knife specifically to use at table when attending a BBQ or visiting a steakhouse for a meal?

This is hilariously wrong. Smoked BBQ dates back to Native Americans smoking meat before European settlers ever got to the US. Santa Maria style BBQ originated in the mid 19th century.
Do you really believe slow smoking meat is older than cooking it over a flame? The only thing older than flame cooking is eating it raw.

As pointed out the method of cooking is irrelevant anyway.

I wonder how many of our opinions on this subject are effected by our upbringing. I clearly remember my Dad in a steakhouse taking out his stockman pocket knife to cut his meat.

I think it's pretty hilarious that you're shifting the goalposts from Santa Maria style BBQ, a distinct regional type of cuisine, to cooking over an open flame. Slow cooked BBQ is a very, very old tradition dating back to barbacoa from Barbados, Mexico and Native Americans in Texas.

I propose a poll.

Choose how you honor your steak (after some one else killed, processed, beat, cooked, and served your meat), by choosing a method below:
a - tear
b - mince
c - rip
d - flay
e - slice**
f - fillet
g - skewer
h - shear
i - rend
j - shred
k - poke
l - chew

Amazing how long this thread has been on-going without addressing the following aspect:

So you watch her getting dressed, put on a suit yourself, and take her to a fancy restaurant. Say, you guys order a Chateaubriand Pour Deux. You discuss the wine with the Sommelier, you even hand him the correct bottle that you brought along to air the wine, to be ready in time with her being done with her 1st course.

When you arrive at the meat course, you use your favorite steak folder, be it the OP's Opinel, Cold Steel, whatever. Fine.

: : :

When you are done with the meal, before taking her home Eric Clapton style ("Wonderful Tonight"), what do you do with the dirty knife ? Wipe it off on napkins or your pants and put it in your pocket ? .... Yuck ! 🤢

Cheers,

Roland.

I'm already back home with her?
Who cares about the knife at that moment?

Yes I discreetly wipe it off and put it back in its pouch

Hmm...being a 'knife guy' I'm kinda proud that I know what to do with a slightly dirty knife...

Yep, this.

Really kinda feel for those that haven't gotten to this advanced stage of 'knife use'

😅

PS if you can't sharpen your knife better just not cut anything, much less the daunting steak on a plate

Makes sense if your (only?) suit is cheaper than your knife. 🤣

I don't think the cooking methodology is important to the point of the question.
My paraphrased version: "If you aren't at home, and someone hands you a hunk of hot meat: would you use your own blade to cut it?"

Yes, without hesitation and have done so for decades. Whether they provide utensils is irrelevant to me.

You could take the last bit of wine in your glass and pour it on your knife over a small bowl or plate. Then wipe it with your napkin and drink the remaining wine from said bowl or plate.
