Do you ever take along a knife specifically to use at table when attending a BBQ or visiting a steakhouse for a meal?

What? And pass up the opportunity to show off my mussel-shucking specific EDC? I think not.

Mussel/Oyster/Clam shucking knife?

Graham Razel.

A true Haut Cuisine diner will pair their knife to their steak AND their wine selection. Never use a back lock whilst eating Kobe and drinking a Chateau Lafite.

I propose a poll.

Choose how you honor your steak (after some one else killed, processed, beat, cooked, and served your meat), by choosing a method below:
a - tear
b - mince
c - rip
d - flay
e - slice**
f - fillet
g - skewer
h - shear
i - rend
j - shred
k - poke
l - chew

I prefer to have it served like a bird. Pre chewed and regurgitated into my mouth.

S Stahlmann , I'm with Frank on this one. No I wouldn't bring to use my own knife in a restaurant, it is uncouth (my opinion). Also, where is your data that backs up your stated fact that sliced meat tastes better than torn meat.

Are you implying that pulled pork would be better sliced?

To expand on what Danke 42 correctly pointed out: The thing about mussels is they need to be closed before cooking - discard any open ones. After cooking, they need to be open - discard any that remained closed. Using an empty shell like a pair of "tweezers" to get the meat out the next one is pretty common usage.

Mussels are very popular in the Netherlands (where I live) and Belgium. I am a fan. Once, for my birthday, my wife bought me a pair of stainless mussel "shells" to be used to eat them as you describe. I have only tried them out a few times, as just doing it with the actual shells is easier. She also bought me a sterling silver "frietvork" (french fry fork) at some point. Apologies for the crappy photo.

Do you ever have your wife dance around with those then throw knives at you like Angelica Huston? That would be cool...

Ahh yes...a steak smoothy. Probably need a new thread for that.

But, in recognition of the theme of this thread, do you bring your own bird to the restaurant to spit food into your mouth, or use the one provided by the restaurant?
He said “like” a bird. Waitstaff better earn that tip. Any steakhouse that doesn’t offer this service hardly deserves a good Yelp review.

I got excited about Argentine BBQ awhile back and got this Gaucho knife in case I am able to cook some and then just cut it up and eat it Argentine Gaucho style.

I was in a cafe on the Mediterranean Sea. The meal was mussels. It is hard to open them. Some people use a shell, like the Russian at the next table. I simply smiled, pulled out a Leatherman Wave and went to work. Score one for the good guys and zero for the Russian.
I know a lot of good guy Russians, one of them took care of a family member for years, better than her own flesh and blood. Don't confuse Russia with Putin, the criminal.

I didn't mention "pulled pork" which is best skipped over to get to the main, BEEF section of the menu.

By definition Santa Maria style IS over a bed of red oak coals.
And?

The use of say white oak in a pinch would not lower the status of the BBQ if everything else was up to spec. In other words it would still be an SMBBQ.

I have a theory and I think it plays out.

The OP, has refused to act in a civil manner. He ignores polite comments and questions and pretty much just runs his mouth.

I would expect that anyone who walks into an establishment in that manner will get a meal that is cooked way past edible and so dried out they'd need a significant chopper to carve some chunks off. Anyone else who goes through life lacking good manners, refinement and grace may find them self in the same place.
