Do You Forge Hawks ?

I'd never head of that until TekSec's link. Hilarious! Of course, now I must join and promote. (If I can stop slacking off enough...) :)

Well I finally got around to making the hawk for this wood. It's not finished yet but with a little filework it's done. I lightly etched it just to see if the pattern worked. O yea....The hawk bill spike got me.
I made a bowie out of the same billet and hope to have it finished for Blacksmith Days. Thanks again

I am a novice knifemaker who has been thinking of in the future to make a hawk for myself. Maybe, with your kit I could try and make that sooner than expected. If not chosen I will still try and make a hawk in the future! :D

I have the urge to get out the drifts and make a rasp hawk this weekend. For those who haven't made a hawk before, it is an easy way to start. Take a farrier's rasp (most don't make great knives - too low carbon) ,and a piece of 1095 (or any good edge steel)... Stacy[/QUOTE]

This is such a good idea! I use farrier's rasps for shaping osage and I have a couple of old ones. I hate to throw away a tool (even if it's dull/broken) but I hadn't gotten around to testing the steel yet. I'm gonna make me a hawk!
Everything's comin' up Milhouse!

82stang,
This give away and the starter kits was done about a year ago. Making a hawk isn't too complicated. Look up the secveral tutorials online, or get one of the hawk making videos. A wrap style hawk is the simplest to start with.

Jackrabbitslim,
Rasps make great hawks. If you want to use it, just sandwich in a piece of 1080 between the wrap.
