do you guys feel naked without your knives

I do as well especially when leaving the house. Like many of you, to me a decent folder is like my watch wallet or keys. Some people ask why and I just tell them its like a spare tire, you might not always need it, but when you do you are sure glad its there, and when you don't have it, thats when you're gonna need it. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive carbon steel lock blade folder? I can't bear the the thought of ruining the edge on my favorite Benchmade 705 (ATS-34) on dirty cardboard. My $12 Ruko RUK00025 is not enough knife (stainless blade of unknown quality, metal and plastic needed smoothing, and the liner lock is highly suspect even after some discreet filework).

This is stainless steel, but well made and made in china! Only $3.89 and it cuts cardboard and plastic a treat. I have had mine a few months and it is still sharp. I use it most days.

I have spares I haven't got round to using yet.

This isn't stainless, but how about a Spyderco Delica? Small and light, but plenty of blade. VG-10 is good stuff and takes a wicked edge. Or (if you can find one) a Kershaw Hawk (ATS-55) is a good knife for light to medium cutting tasks. I work in a grocery store, so I field dress plenty of boxes with my Endura or Hawk (or Sebenza when the mood hits to carry it). A Delica or Hawk can be had for less than $40 if you look around (there's also a Ti version of the Hawk for a little more... I really like that knife).

As to the topic at hand... yes I feel naked without a knife. I've had one on me for so long. Even in high school I carried a Buck 110 on my belt and it was ok (I graduated in 99, two months after Columbine). All through college I carried a knife and I contine to carry a knife. I'm rarely without.

To work I carry a tactical because they're just easier to use quickly. But in more formal occasions (I never dress up, but do go out to some nicer places at times) I'll drop one of my slippies in my pocket.

I totally feel naked without a knife. I've been trying to stash a few in my truck just incase.

I fell very naked without my knives, my everyday carry are:
BM 551 Griptillian ( plain edge)
Spyderco Pacific salt ( serrated )
Leatherman Supertool
Mini Tanto Cold Steel ( sharpest of all my knives )

I prefer to have my knives with me but I can do without if I have to. I don't carry if I know I will be searched such as at a sporting event, night club, courthouse, or airport. If I am doing a quick trip to the donut shop or video store I probably won't carry a knife. Going to work is a bit different. I make sure I have my SAK and Superknife.

Prior to 9/11 and for a short time thereafter, I was a computer geek. Able to disassemble one at a moment's notice. My EDC was a Leatherman WAVE, a gift from my son. He knew I was a knife person.

Now I sling dogfood (not quite a living, but welfare ain't an option), clerking in a pet supply store.

First week, was not too comfortable carrying a blade. By week 2, it was obvious I could work better with one, and have never looked back.

Use your Benchmade, it's a good knife which means it's a good tool for cutting. Unless of course it's a drawer queen and you carry it just for show. ;)

But if you just can't stand using your Benchmade for cutting cardboard then either get a plain old box cutter or a Super Knife. No sharpening, though you can touch up the edges easily to get more mileage out of the blades.

I do feel naked without a knife, because the only time I don't have one is in the shower! I don't sleep with a knife, but my Baretta 92F is next to me on my nightstand (quick access safe).

I feel naked and lightweight. :) I get my knives first, then everything else.

Boxcutter,
Sounds like you need a SE Endura. It will cut all day long, and the price is good.

Blades

Yep.
It is the first thing I grab in the morning so I don't forget it. I wish my wife would take showers with me as much as it does.

I do feel somewhat naked without my knife, but as of late, I've learned to... um... be comfortable with my body, I guess (if we're gonna carry the metaphor out that far.) One thing I've found is that a SureFire and an Atwood Prybaby fill the void pretty well when I'm knife-less.

I get up in the morning and the first thing I do is put a knife in my PJs pocket.

If I don't have a knife I'm probably naked. The only times when I'm dressed and have no knives (or other gadgets I carry all the time) is when I travel by plane. I remember when I used to be able to travel with my SAK without been bothered.

Some might find it funny, but sometimes when I'm around the house in my underware (going to the toilet at night, for example) I sometimes carry a knife, too. Clipped to the collar of my t-shirt.

I can understand THAT! I have one clipped to my PJ's. I don't see it much different.

I have left home for business for a few weeks and will gladly admit I will run to the closest knife shop to broaden my collection. One rare time there wasn't a decent place to pick up a blade so I ended up with a Wal-Mart special to hold me over.

Knife, wallet, watch, keys, and a flashlight. Feel naked if I am missing even one of those items.

Just the other night one of my friends admitted that the first thing he does after a flight is pick up his luggage and reload his pockets with knives. He doesn't leave the baggage area until he's got them back where they belong.

I think its been about 24 years since I left the house without a knife. When I fly, I'll take it out of checked baggage and re-pocket the thing right there in the airport when I arrive.

(guess I didn't read bquinlan's post the first time through. hah! I'm not the only one!)
