Do you guys use your limited edition knives? This ones a Civivi Scintilla. They dont make these anymore

I have another one with an ivory handle but I'm afraid to use them because theyre rare now.

Are they worth saving or should I just enjoy them?

Only you can answer that. What tangible pleasure will you get from holding on to it? Personally I have a few rare knives I still use because I see no point in just coveting something, life is too short. Covet while you use it.
 
I use it whether it’s rare/discontinued or not, because I only buy knives to use these days. Some of my favorite user knives I couldn’t replace even if I wanted to. So I just plan on having and enjoying them forever knowing it’s something most folks don’t see often.
 
Let’s say for example, that you keep it pristine for 20 years and then sell it for 3 times what you paid for it.

You made a profit but you never got to enjoy the knife. It’s your knife. Why let somebody else have all the fun?
 
It took me a while to finally carry my small sebenza on a regular and I wanted to choke myself when I saw the first scuff on it. Now I just roll with it and enjoy it.

But I won't deny the pleasure in owning something just to take out now and then and enjoy looking at knowing that heck yeah I own that.
 
If you're keeping them to resale, remember that it could take 10, 20... years or more before they're collectable.

That means you have to take up space to store them. What if something happens to you? Do you have a list of the knives, for your family?

Or, would you rather just enjoy carrying them? Some people carry knives but don't "use" them. They carry a backup "user" and show there carry piece, to interested parties.

As long as you feel like you’re getting value out of them, there’s no wrong choice. The market will decide anyway, and the market is fickle. You can always wait and decide later if it’s too much mental gymnastics. It’s just a hobby. ;)
 
Do what you can live with. I'd use the ivory one and keep the donut knife pristine because what makes it neat-o is the paint job. More than likely neither one will increase in value -- just the way that donut is likely to crumble -- and I say that as the owner of a knife I paid 99 bucks for ages ago that's now worth about three hundred bucks, or slightly more than the rate of inflation. (Now, having said that, I suspect that I'd use the donut knife, too, simply because it would make me smile.)

It depends if it’s something I want to use or not, and if I have one thats already used or one that is less special to use.

In other words I don’t use it just to use it. I use it because I want to use it. I probably bought it because I want to use it.

If I bought it to look at, or because of historical purposes. I wouldn’t use it

Definitely thinking the same thing. The donut paint looks stupid so ill just keep that shelved.
 
There are thousands of "rare" knives out there, rare doesn't mean valuable. Especially when it comes to Chinese brands, which tend to throw tons of designs out there every year to see what sticks. You might be able to flip some of them for a profit later, but that depends mostly on if you can find the right buyer who even remembers that model and then is willing to pay a premium for it.

Almost every single watch that I own is discontinued or a limited edition; having something unique and not readily available is a big draw for me. I've carried over that mentality to my knives as well, but more of those are still in production.
 
Let me relate 2 anecdotes.

One is my personal experience with a particular safe queen, a Boker ceramic from the 90's. I thought they were really cool back then, couldn't touch the price. Bought one the other year off eBay, kids selling dad's estate kinda thing, with original receipt. Dad spent over $200 and it sat in his safe for decades, sold to me for half as much and now sits in my safe. I still think it's cool. I don't know why I'm not using it, but it feels cursed at this point. Maybe my kids will break even.

The other is more a collection of anecdotes from my brother, who helps an auctioneer part time. Use it, don't use it, but if you intend to make a buck sell while you can. Or else, according to him, it all ends up in a job lot with some Longaberger baskets for $5.
 
I use mine , or at least they are all subject to be used . ;)

I don't pay any big premium , or buy them just because they're "limited" .

There has to be some feature(s) that I want , that's not otherwise available .

For example , I have a full Ti / 3V Demko AD10 LE from Cold Steel , at a very bargain price . :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

There is a difference between "limited edition" and "they don't make these any more".
A real limited edition is just that, a few pieces, a hundred or so made, serialized maybe, different than regular production.
A knife that was made by the thousands or tens of thousands but is no longer made isn't limited edition, its just an older model thats out of production. The Scintilla was a BladeHQ exclusive, not really a limited edition except that it was a giveaway promotional item that was time limited. Given that it was a free knife, whatever you get for it is more than you paid...
The former may or may not have some secondary market value depending on what its. GEC knives for example are generally fairly limited production and for the most part bring high prices.
Collector value on the latter is more like you get what you can if somebody is looking to buy it.
