M390 (and twins 20CV and CTS204P). Great edge retention, great corrosion resistance, takes a nice polished edge without much difficulty (though it does take some time).

There is something about the way M4 cuts that I absolutely love, and I find it easy to keep stupid sharp. I like lots of steels for different reasons, but if I gotta pick a favorite... M4 releases get me excited.

some of the steels I like that I have used are 1095, 420hc, M390, cruwear, 204P, Elmax and 154cm. Oh and S30V. My favorites so far are M390, 1095 and cruwear with M390 so far my ultimate favorite. I'm hoping to get a few Busse to check out INFI and SR101.

For a useless poll, folks still seem to be participating. ;)
if there are only 10 options it could have been changed to say, chinese steel, non powdered steel, powdered super steel, high carbon steel etc.

Ok, your right, my bad. My intentions were to simply start a candid conversation on blade steels because I thought it would be a fun and interesting read. When the poll stopped at number 10 I went ahead and submitted it anyway. If your favorite steel isn't on the poll, that doesn't mean I'm implying in any way that it is inferior to those listed. Actually, one of my favorites is VG10 and it didn't make the list. As I said, this thread is intended to spark conversation.

It really depends on the knife and task.

For me:
CTS-XHP
CPM-S35VN
CPM-154
CPM-M4

I liked Elmax while I owned it, though currently there are no knives that I am interested in that use it. If ZT was smart, they'd release a manual version of the 0770CF in Elmax. Or CTS-204p etc.

My vote - VG-10 and O1- neither on the list. VG-10 is a a great EDC blade for the way I use a knife. I like it very sharp and it does take an edge easily and retain it for whittling, card board box carving, or other tasks I do in the woodworking shop in the course of a day. I don't mind needing to touch up on the Sharpmaker every day or two.

1095, CPM S30 V and 154CM are a few others I have tried that need more work to keep sharp and to me, don't get as sharp.

The O1 (especially) from JK Handmade Knives is an outstanding work blade for woods type fun and virtually indestructible. Needs to be cared for but I don't mind that - part of the fun of knife ownership. VG-10 is a much easy to care for steel. Spyderco Hap 40 is a favorite too.

I picked M390 but if 3V were on there it would be close. S35VN would be up there too for a great all around steel.

At the moment M4 and K390. I just picked up some Maxamet so I'm very curious how this will perform. M4 is my favorite though, it is just an awesome steel!

1095, also O1 and A2. I'm not fond of S30V.

Most of my knives are fixed blade that I use for hunting, camping, etc., and I prefer carbon steel over stainless.

3V, D2, VG10 in that order My Falkniven gets lots of love as well but its 3G lam. i think.....holds an edge like the vg10.
