Do you have to have 4 or 5 of the identical knife when you find one you really like?

I have begun doing this recently with the more common EDC knives I carry... I keep spares of my SAK Compact and Yeoman as they always ride in a watch pocket with a larger fixed or folding option for the day. Also, recently I picked up an additional Manix 2 plain edge in S30v to accompany my combo edge DLC S30v simply because I find them an excellent, sturdy and capable all around EDC option. I did this as it seems that Spyderco has a history of discontinuing models that I find useful.

I don't have 4 of every model I like. But there are models that I really, really like and I go overboard with those. But there are not that many that I feel that way about.
Hell, I am an old man, retired and living on a fixed income. I probably don't have half the knife budget some forum members do. And I like a variety of blades from small folders to machetes.
Especially machetes lately. I own a great deal more "one of" blades than I do multiples. Just wanted to clarify a little bit of what I meant in my original post. Thanks for all the replies.
More power to each of us and to each his own!

I try not to get EXACT duplicates. That said, I do have 13 Delicas, 5 Enduras, and 5 Dragonfly 2's. But they are all different in either color or handle material/blade steel. I also have 6 different Caly/Calypso models.

I have 3 delicas, 1 blue, 1 orange, 1 waved and I still want a purple but that's the most of 1 model I have. I wouldn't mind a 3rd skyline though as long as its the blue s30v. I doubt I would do the same for knives over $100 delicas and skylines are cheap enough to have a few of.

Most models - nope.

Certain models - yes... for different reasons on each. A couple of them are my EDCs - vintage Kabar 1232s and Buck 484s/482s, basically in case I misplace one or dull one and don't have time to sharpen one right then.

All other duplicates are parts of collections. I guess my only real "obsession" knives are "real" 1219C2s (Mk2s) (none are the asian clones, the 'Kabar style wanna-bes"). I have 64 of various manufacturers and variations (WW2 Gens 1,2,3,4, VN, P-VN). The primary collection of them is 1 of every version made, I think and hope. :D

The extras are special - if I find one that has a documented provenance of military personnel use, I keep those along with their documentation, regardless of use - special forces, coxswain, cook, supply clerk, it doesn't matter, they were used by veterans and to me, they're part of real history.

Been accumulating them since 1975.

I have a pair of Kershaw Tremor's, all the rest are singles. I don't have the cash I'd need for all the knives that I'd like buy individually, so no way I could afford to get four or more of a kind, nor would I care to.

Nope. I never have the money to buy more than one knife at a time so i try to just buy something different. If i had more money i definitely would!

Why stop at 4 or 5? I'm not talking about carrying one and keeping another in the safe. Collectors of certain blade models buy multiples because...they are "collectors." Has nothing to do with "carrying." For example, a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 probably is available (if you can find them) in perhaps at least twenty or more different blade-steels and/or G10 scale designs and/or scale colors. The "rarity factor" plays a large part in the highly-inflated prices for these models.

Just two.

At one time the Benchmade AFCK (the original, liner-lock, round hole) was my absolute favorite folder. I liked the design so much that I thought it would always be my favorite. I started out with just two, but when I found out that they were going to be discontinued, I bought three more.

Then they came out with the oval hole AFCK, and then the axis-lock model. So much for "discontinued". I paid $100 a piece for each of those five knives.

And then I learned something that many here know- sometimes you get bored with what you have, sometimes you find something you like more, and sometimes your taste in knives just changes.

I regret that I bought five of the same knife and I will never do it again. In fact, I won't even buy doubles at this point. I've had several other "favorites" since the AFCK and I'm glad I never bought more than one of each because my tastes continue to change. The knives that interest me today are very different from most of the knives I've called my "favorites" in the past.

No. I don't own duplicates of my knives unless there's something about the second one that sets it apart from the first one. For example, I have Mora Companions in both blue and green, I have the standard Kershaw Crown and the blue "Walmart exclusive" version....I have a blue sprint run Tenacious and I'll eventually pick up a standard model. So if there's a difference in color or materials I may buy 2 of the same knife, but if they're both exactly the same, same materials, same color, I won't buy 2 of them.

If I really like it I'll buy an extra. Helps with the intial OCD....one to abuse, the second to collect, fondle, etc...

Yes, I do buy more than I should sometimes. Like the Esee kick I was on. I liked the Esee 6 so I much that I bought 4 in a matter of weeks. Then I bought a 4, 3 and Izula. Then I got tired of them and sold all but the Izula. I had 6 Kershaw leeks at one point, but only 3 were duplicates. I tend to be obsessive compulsive about hobbies, but I am always on the hunt for the next best thing, the upgrade, the next level. I an not going to buy any more duplicates of any knife from now on though. Simply because I know I will be getting rid of it, no matter how much I liked it to begin with.

Negative. I don't make enough money to afford multiples. That being said, I don't generally buy knives just to display them or keep them in a safe as collectables. I buy a knife with the intention of using it. I think the only knife I have 2 of is the PM2, and that's because they're different exclusive runs. Well, that and I have 2 Leatherman Skeletool CX's because I bought one to replace the one I had lost that ended up being found a year later by my wife. In my car. Go figure. :D

I shudder at the thought of only having one Spyderco Military.

What if I misplace it? Or leave it at work? Or worse, at the cabin!
