Do you need a finger guard?

Perfect world?

That doesn't mean everyone should wear a helmet at all times.

Of course how many lives would be saved if it was law that you needed wear a helmet at all times outside of your home.

I'm sure there would be less traumatic brain injuries from all the random accidents people never expected to happen. But that's ridiculous.

Just like saying a knife needs a guard.
Your broad statement against finger protection is silly. Perhaps niche tasks performed by knives are fine without finger protection. Your all inclusive statements about guards/finger protection are ignorant.

Like what? That my opinion comes from experience of what I use knives for?

I have a farm:

Do you have any videos of using knives to butcher animals to share your points?

Despite made in Sweden Mora has always been one of the most popular knife in Finland, because it is cheap and pretty good. Old Mora had a wooden handle and no finger guard, but now the most popular Mora model in Finland has plastic handle with finger guard. So, Finns have started to think that puukko with guard is fine.

Again you've ignored my question asking about your experiences that you formed your opinion on?

I've provided plenty info on the why I came to my opinion. Actual experience.

You on the other hand? We're still in suspense.

I decided to make change in my life today. You never know when you’ll need them :D

Nah, Guards are optional.
Safety is the user, not a feature.

We've reached an impasse, so agree to disagree.
I feel just as strong about guardless as you do about guards.
Yep. Safety is always about the user. Sometimes we make mistakes and generally speaking I'm willing to pay the price. I think sometimes we like to argue just for the sake of an argument.

...True outdoorsmen using a tool with no guard successfully for hundreds or thousands of years without getting killed or maimed are obviously doing something right.
However, you dont have to like knives with no guard. I perfectly understand the reasoning behind wanting a guard. It makes sense for a lot of people/tasks and is a most reasonable request.

Without checking, Id say, that most of my fixed blade knives have some type of guard..

I like both types - knives with and knives with no guard AND there should be room for both types of knives ... and not least for people liking one or the other type of knife ... or both.
It all depends on the knife design. The guard issue is why I tend not to buy Pukkos and Opinels. Yeah, with the Pukko, I'm probably missing out on a good design. The first Mora I purchased was the scout knife with the guard. I suspect that clearly shows where I lean.

I really like the sleek design of a saber type drop point, and I there are so many knives that use this design. I lean toward a guard of some kind. But there are no absolutes in this preference equation. Some have guards (or should) and some don't...

With guards, I think that the bigger the knife, the more likely you're should consider a guard built into a design. We may use a big knife a whole lot harder than a small three finger fixed blade. Some one mentioned a typical slip joint design.... not really intended for really forceful use overall. With slip joints, I tend to like half-stops.... probably a safety thing for me. I sort of expect a half stop and if I'm using one without... I may just make a mistake. But I don't depend on the half stop to save my bacon.

Even famous knife maker Phil Wilson prefers a guard of some kind due to experience. I personally think any knife designed for cleaning game or for hard use should have a guard or some means of preventing precious fingers from sliding onto the sharp blade. It is only prudent. Of course, if you like dull knives then you do not need one.

Simmer down Dr ShinyBritches.
You don't have a single on topic post in this thread. You have a silly photo and a comment directed at me. Absolutely zero on topic.

Try trolling less, or I bet you'll get a moderaters attention.

I've worked with guys who removed the guards from circular saws and bypassed the safeties on nail guns. I prefer my tools with an added measure of security.

Since you've chosen to ignore my very simple and direct question, I can only surmise that you are being willfully ignorant and at this point you are full of hot air.

I've backed my opinions up with how and why I came to them. Have you?

Keep asking for a video, it doesn't make you look any more knowledgeable when you make statements that contradict knife makers who dwarf you in every manner.

Put up or shut up.

This is one of the big reasons why I like Beckers. You could coat your hand in motor oil and not worry about your fingers sliding down onto the edge thanks to some clever handle and blade design by Ethan Becker.

What do you want to see, you have access to my YouTube channel.

You seem triggered.

I'm asking for a video since the pictures don't show me how you are using the knife.

You refuse to answer the question. You made foolish statements that scream noob. Bury your head in the sand. Our posts are visible to everyone, your refusal to answer a simple question has said enough for you.

Wow. Just wow. I've seen some foolish statements but this one is up there! Congrats :D

Do you want to have a discussion or a pissing match?

Guards are for babies

For those who don't want to go back and find the manure this "craftsman" is saying. It starts with "guards are for babies".

According to this know it all newbie who won't even say what experience he has using knives or where he developed his "opinion" finger protection is an unnecessary feature on a knife.

News flash, the LONG list of makers who disagree are extremely talented and prosperous with many years of experience.

Coincidence? I think not.

You're pretty fired up.
I don't agree with you.

Guards are optional based on the user

You like guards

I don't like guards
