Do you need a finger guard?

Warning for insults.
You're pretty fired up.
I don't agree with you.

Guards are optional based on the user

You like guards

I don't like guards
I'm sipping red breast on my couch watching animal planet with my kids. Hardly fired up. I find your squirming out of admitting your opinion is based on no actual experience amusing.

"Guards are for babies" lol You're a joke.

Just because you make knives that the blade goes directly to where the hand goes doesn't make "guards for babies".

That statement says exactly how much experience you have with knives. Go make more vids in your garage.

Better yet study the designs of those who came before you, and currently do what you are attempting to do. Learn from them.

I believe as time goes on and you actually accrue some real world use, you will rethink that ignorant statement.

So... my training wheels post awhile back was just my indication that the thread has already gone under... in my unsubstantial, dim-witted opinion :) (also meant to lighten the mood, but...not so much)

My contribution, part 1: I like guards but don’t feel uncomfortable without them. If using without, be mindful. Simple.

More foolish memes. Our conversation IS on topic or you can't read? More trolling.

Then make a video, show me what your talking about when you get time.

No need to get upset.
We don't even know each other.

This conversation is going nowhere, I'm not making a video. You want me to make a video and you won't answer a question?

How'd you get to your opinion again? Many years of use, trial and error? Doing what tasks?

Cold temps?
Human error?
Distractions?

Of course, I'm an avid cook and outdoorsman.
I finally got bear tags this year, I'm stoked.

I'm genuinely curious, so knives that have designs that keep a physical stop between the blade and hand are for "babies"?

I feel very strongly about not having a guard. They get in the way of use and Sharpening in my opinion.
So... Randall, AG Russel, Loveless, Phil Wilson, Dan keffeler who include some level of finger slip protection are making knives for babies?

That's just a few of the guys making knives for "babies".

So where does finger saftey factor in to you?

I like those knives but I still have my own opinions.

No need to get so upset.
I'm not your enemy.

I thought the training wheel thing was funny. XD

Most of my knives don't have guards and are made so that the handle and blade flow without interruption (lots of pinch-grip action and slicyness), BUT they're obviously not made for vigorous stabbing and are not safety knives. If taking down an ice block or something, I'd just hold it like an ice pick and cork the back end with my thumb. BUT I like guards too, a lot, for a bunch of reasons including that you can be more cavalier with a blade and be less likely to hurt yourself.

On swords and fighting blades, a very important aspect of a guarded hilt is so your hand doesn't get cut or hurt by your opponent's weapon. Cutting the sword hand of your opponent is a crucial strike.

One of the posters in this thread should have received four or five warnings for this thread.
I gave him one. With points.

Address the question. Do not insult other posters.

Need? No.

Appreciate? Only when my hand slips...

I've cut up more than a few deer with a few different knives. About the only time I like having a guard is when I'm initially opening the deer up, but at that point my hands aren't terribly slick or cold (usually) and I can usually be careful (I hold the knife blade up, thumb on the bolster or behind the guard when initially opening). Everything else is a cutting stroke and I don't feel a need for a guard, but I don't feel one gets in the way.

That being said, I've not yet sliced open my thumb while cleaning came, but I have stabbed myself in my offhand thumb when I was being careless while butchering. A guard wouldn't have saved me then.

I don't much care for a guard on top (spine side), but again, it's not that much of a bother so long as it's small enough for me to get my thumb over (i.e. Buck 119).

I'm going to put a handle on a leuku blade in the next couple of months, there won't be a guard, just a nicely shaped handle, and I ain't skerred.
