Do you own a Cowboy Hat?

Akubra also has a great reputation.

'Course a trail boss or ranch foreman will NEVER hire a guy wearing a straw hat, since he'll spend more time chasing his hat than working...

I own two Stetsons, one a straw. Resistol are a really good bang for the buck, too.

I also own a crushale wool felt by Pendleton. Gave my Tilley to my son. I do still have my old, trusty wool US Navy issue watch cap.

By the way, the felt Stetson was cut to a snap brim fedora proportional cut. It's so windy here everything but a watch cap blows off with out a stampede strap, which annoys me too much to wear.

I still have my Navy issue watch cap also. It's got some miles on it as well as some red lead and grey paint on it.

One of the reasons I bought the Tioga was because of the leather Stampede strap I love it. We still haven't had much winter here yet, but I wear the hat with the stampede strap back behind my ears. I can't wait to wear it cinched down in front. Bring on the weather! ;)

I don't have any cowboy hats. Over here we wear Akubras. I have 3. One is like the old hats that Ed has on his wall, well used and can't throw it away. The last one I bought, an Akubra Traveller, went all over Kenya and Tanzania, on my head, last October. If I had taken a truckload with me I could have financed the trip from sales. I had people wanting to buy it everywhere I went. Noggintops has them if you want to see it.

I kinda got a cowboy hat Phil. I wear it mostly when I wanna look smooth! :D
Here's a pic of a similar one.

Mikey, I like your hat, I don't know if I could call it a cowboy hat. But, then again a cowboy could wear anyting that was handy.

Mike, you're a big guy, I picture you with a much bigger hat, maybe like a Charlie Daniels hat.

I wonder where Charlie gets his hats from?

Phil, the bull riders are at MSG now have you been there with your hat ?? Others can watch on VS TV.

Mete, thanks for the heads-up on the Rodeo, I don't know if I'll be able to make it or not.

You got me thinking back on the last Rodeo I went to, it was at the Garden, but not MSG as it is now. The year was probably 1956 or 57 and the host of the Rodeo was Rin Tin Tin and Corporal Rusty. I didn't wear a cowboy hat there, but my Mom did buy me a hat like Corp. Rusty, brim turned up with an insignia on the front. I loved that hat. The time before that the host was Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

This may bring back some memories for some.

In ancient times my hero was Roy Rogers .The Roy Rogers Rodeo came to NYC when I was 5 and I had great anticipation about going to it. At the last minute I came down with the measles and had to stay home .It broke my heart !!! I actually rode a horse once , in those days , in Brooklyn ! I watched some of the bull fighting today , it was on ABC TV .Last round tomorrow. Giuliani was there in cowboy boots and fancy jacket !

Hello Phill
I also have a Stetson Beaver and a Leather Aussie hat as well I wear them while I work and ride my Horses..

Jay, let me be the first to welcome you to BFC. I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do. Kind of cool you would hit this thread for your first post.

You made me think with your post. When I was a kid my uncle Jackie used to keep horses, Pinky & Babe. We lived next door, so I was always around horses. When I was a teen I used to work taking groups of riders out at Bergen Beach Riding Academy. When I was first dating my wife I used to drag her to Dude ranches to see if I could interest her in horses. We were at The Rocking Horse Dude Ranch the night Elvis died. I've ridden upstate NY, Mexico, Lake Tahoe, (Bonanza coutry) IOW I've spent a lot of time in the saddle for a city kid. I don't however remember any time wearing a cowboy hat while sitting on a horse. Strange.

Yeah, got both a leather one (don't know what "style" it is) and a felt one. (I think the felt one is crushable.) Wear them both. The leather one I wear generally only around the property, when I'm doin' yard work and the like. Or on the rare occasions when I venture into the north woods :). It's pretty-well sweat-stained and discoloured now. I also have pointy (J-toe) cowboy boots ("roach killers," we call 'em) and, of course, jeans.

Rat, it's not about being a "poseur." So-called "cowboy" hats were designed the way there were, with their wide brims, for a reason: They excel at keeping the sun and rain off your neck and face. And a good pair of cowboy boots (by "good" I mean expect to spend not less than $250 these days) will last literally forever with minimal care and occasional re-soling. And jeans, well... if you don't know why jeans are good, I'm afraid there's no hope for you :D

I also have, believe-it-or-not, a leather fringe jacket. You'd be amazed at how well those things keep you dry in the pouring rain. I was. It turns out the fringes on the real deal have a function, and it ain't decoration. I haven't worn that in years and years. I have Gor-Tex outerwear now :).

Some day I plan to own a duster ;).

Here's my line-up

From left to right - an Akubra bookies hat and two Kangaroo leather Jacaru hats.

The Kangaroo leather hats can be found in any cheesy Australiana tourist outfitters but are actually very functional.

The Kangaroo leather is quite cool and breathable and I've worn mine all over the place in our fiercly hot north.

But, I'm sad to say, the best, most functional hat I've worn in the bush is one of these.....

Don, that is a real cute little girl and the hats don't seem to fit her too bad. If you put my hat on her head the brim would be sitting on her shoulders, I've got a pretty big melon.

Chili, welcome to BFC. Are you saying that you once wore a Stetson, or that you have a hat that you got second hand?

I like the different views and enlarged views on Golden Gate. I might try some of these hats on in Photoshop. ;)

I finally decided to try on some hats in Photoshop. I'm not looking to buy one now, just window shopping. Here's three of my favorites.
