Do You Pace Yourself When Buying?

 Just wondering if anyone has more knives coming in than they can enjoy at once? I find I can become quite driven acquiring knives(among other interests) to the point of not fully enjoying the one I just got. I'm not talking a dozen knives in the mail, either. Just a couple arriving close to each other. It's almost like if I don't get that knife today. it might not be there tomorrow:rolleyes: . Other than for financial reasons, does anyone intentionally pace themself? I 'm starting to think I'm going to more in order to better research my next purchase and in order to enjoy the knives I have.

No I don't pace myself. My wife paces me. :D I'd be running amuck without here acting as my thermostat controller.

I buy several at a time.....you have a good point in that I do not get the same enjoyment out a each one as I should, but I have always been a quanity collector.....and quality also

i tried to slow down with my OCD bying of knives but once i started looking at the new microtechs it was on

Not really:) It depends on what's out at what moment in time. Good example was a few weeks ago - I was in 'Vegas at the 8-Ball Championship. The intent was to get a Native at Wally World, plus find a G-10 Byrd Meadowlark, perhaps an Endura 4 (I was hoping the ZDP Delica would also have shipped by then) as a minimum. Got my Native, but just ran out of time to snoop too much - got a Buck Cutback (same time as native) and a BM Mini-Grip/Tanto point, and a SureFire 6P instead. Now, at that point in time, and still, I had a ZDP Delica on order up here, along with two Endura 4's, and I think something else (can't remember - same vendor). Up to that point, I hadn't bought a blade in several weeks. For me, it's more of whatever catches my eye (I REALLY should stop cruisin' these forums:) )

I usually try to pace myself at about 1 folder a month as a minimum, but sometimes "stuff" just shows up and a person's gotta do what he's gotta do:D

I've gotten to the point that I only really want to carry knives by people I know and like. That and a taste for somewhat expensive knives. Thus, I have to pace myself because it takes a bit to come up with that much disposable cash. SO, its looking like the next "phase" of my collecting will result in the whole "save all year for one big purchase" thing.

Of course, there's the prodos this year that I'm probably looking at getting this fall from Kershaw and Spyderco, but that's something else. In the case of THOSE, I'll probably just get them all at once.

My income paces me. If I made more, I would just wallow in knives.

Desire is pain. One way to be happy is to rid yourself of desire. This is hardto do since it is human nature to desire. So the other way to be happy is to buy so damn much of what you want that before you can desire another material object, it's already at your doorstep. If you can afford this, then go for it. One must just be careful not to overextend financially.

The price of the knives I purchase is an automatic pacing system. Though I just got a big custom bowie and have a Loveless style chute knife that will be arriving in about three weeks. That's about as close together as I have ever received knives. I get plenty of time to enjoy my treasure before the next one arrives.

That is a good point. I have noticed that buying a higher-end knife holds me over for longer. Buying a cheaper knife usually gives me a "high" that wears off sooner.

I like spending more for something more special *AND* I like spending less. I am willing to pay a grand for a knife, but not above buying an Opinel (and no one should be). But if I have a certain amount of money, I have found it is better to spend it on a knife as good as I can afford rather than several less expensive knives. Buying multiple less expensive knives at the same time gives a "high" that wears off faster.

But I think spending a grand on one knife in one month isn't always more fun than buying two $500 knives, two weeks apart. So I guess that would be considered pacing versus spending the full grand on the two $500 knives at the same time. But I do not think I pace myself because I would rather drop that grand on one more special knife, rather than spread the money out over time.

I pace myself by buying knives until I run out of money. Then I just start saving up a little here and a little there until I have enough to buy another knife(s) I want then I start all over again. It's taken me many years to collect all of the knives that I have but now I am just sticking to Busse, Fahrman, and Trident at least until something like them shows up that I can't live without.

Yup, no self control here what so ever.

The Wife and finances dictate what an when i can get more, knives, lights, car parts ect.

Ok, i can control myself, but barely.

didnt pace myself atall before, now i sold my old knives to by new ones and was thinking the exact same thing you said yesterday.

in the past week ive had, my first seb, my first bm bali , a ronin bali trainer , a lmt edition 635 and apparition, all in the space of about 4 days. on ,moday im having a morpho, 3 hibben throwers, a hibben pro axe, 3 other throwers , another throwing hawk/hatchet and a knife target and am considering a yojimbo or 705/10 on monday(arrive tuesday), im also trying to sell some stuff to get a small and large unique seb.

now it may sound weird but i feel like im pacing myself(yeah right) as im making educated decisons rather than just buying what i like on the day(oh yeah, i got a presidio about 1-2 week back).

but i definately kinda like to only have the one at a time as even in the long run you end up loving each knife more that way.

altough if you have 2 or 3..or4,5........ you dont get board as you can move on to the next.

when you get 3,4......sh*t, it can hard to take in, quite overwhelming really.

i fu*kin love knives!!

you can end up loosing the value of money mind....serious.

Yeah i personally am taking a step back from collecting for at least 3 months. I jsut bought a 700 dollar sebbie, and for a broke college student to do that really kinda sums it up. So if you think that you are buying to many knives or spending to much take a step back, If you dont you can end up having a real problem. I think that knives can actually become addicting.

I buy knives in spurts, like 3 at a time. That way I just get the "another knife?" lecture once. Or rather, 3 times -- each time she discovers another new one, but it's all over quicker. I keep a box of knives in the closet, on top of her shoe rack.
