How to you get your knives sharp again?
A lot of people sharpen blades free hand with wet and/or dry stones. It’s a learning curve and takes practice. Some use belt wheels. Many more use guided sharpeners. I have a Wicked Edge set and a Spyderco Sharpmaker. I rarely use the WE as I maintain edges once I get a good bevel on them. In other words I don’t let them get so dull I need to rebevel a blade. When a knife can no longer slide through a tomato skin or a crusty loaf of bread that’s my cue to touch it up on the Sharpmaker.

Yes, I wasn't going to pay somebody with questionable skills and a grinder touch my knives.
It costs less than $15 to get a double sided diamond stone that should last a long time if not abused. Less than $10 for a cheap aluminum oxide stone of uncertain flatness.

Horror of horrors, I use a belt grinder (with frequent addition of water to the blade) and a bench polisher with compound to maintain the edge of my household's kitchen and EDC knives. My own EDCs, they get the whetstone treatment up to a silly 3000 and compounded strop.

Only as a last resort and I got workshop system to do it with. Normally I just use a belt strop to bring an edge back to life, if that for some reason doesn't do it then I'll use a ceramic, I rarely ever had I use the diamond files to fix an edge. Only time I used them was to fix my ex-bfs bowie he nicked on a knot when trying to baton like those dudes on youtube.

If you maintain your edge/edges aka stropping, you'll need to sharpen with stones much less..And save some metal in the.process😉...

I also have the original worksharp! Not sure how long now but at this point I can clamp it down and free hand a knife back to sharp in a pass or two.....

Years ago I bought a silverware set at a yard sale for $12.00 and played with grinding butter knives into steak knives......Well worth the time money and efforts spent all those years ago.

Everyone has to figure out what worx for them!!

I spent a good amount of my childhood trying to impress my Dad with my ability to sharpen my knives. I had watched him sharpen knives for hours so I knew it was something I needed to know.

I’d get one as sharp as I could, give it to him he would make it better and give it back. No real lesson, just got to observe him.

Eventually he took my knife checked it and handed it back, and nodded his head “good”.

I never got as good as he was, but earned his approval.

Companies like Benchmade include lifetime sharpening services with your purchase. Shipping is the deal breaker there.

Honestly I’m not impressed with most factory edges why would I want them to do it again?
