Do you sit on your Knife?

I sometimes carry in my back pocket when there's no other pocket available allowing easy access to the knife. I like cargo-type pants with side-seam pockets for knives (Tru-Spec) or double-seat rear pockets (5.11) but sometimes I wear jeans or other styles of pants and the back pocket just seems to be the handiest place.

Yep. My butt's going to give before Titanium does. ;)

Annndddd that's the problem. Your butt is designed as a cushion, well... maybe it evolved that way... anyways, if you sit for long periods of time, having anything keeping your butt out of alignment is no good. I sit at a desk 60% of the day, Monday through Friday. I have since repositioned my knives to my right front pocket and wallet to my left front, via a Saddleback front pocket ID wallet. Not only is it more secure that way, but it's also more comfortable.

That being said, I do carry a small fixed blade in my back pocket if I'm going to be standing all day, in the shop or outside in the yard.

Sometimes when my side pockets are too full with junk from work in the garage or shop, my ZT 562 gets relegated to my left rear pocket. I have sat on this knife a few times when getting into my vehicle or while taking a break on a chair. So far, it's held up fine.

So my question to you guys (and girls) on blade forums is this: If you don't normally put your knife in your back pocket, but have a few times, how did the knife do? I wonder how certain knifes do under the "sit on it" test. Would the scales break off of a SAK? Any epic knife failures after it was subjected to the strain of being underneath your full weight? :D

Slipped my Spyderco Spot (in the sheath!) into my back pocket in the afternoon; forgot about it, then jumped in the SUV leaving work. Heard and felt a little snap. Remove knife from sheath to see it has broken on the top of the loop. Now it is extra fugly with ghetto mig weld LOL. Wish I had a tig machine. We'll see how it holds up this time. :foot::rolleyes:

I see tons of people carry iPhones and galaxy's in there back pockets with no problems so I think a regular pocket knife should be no problem.

I've sat on many folders (Spyderhawk, Pacific Salt, Utilitac II, Byrd Cara Cara 2 FRN, Dragonfly, and others) and fixed blades (Spyderco ARK, CRKT Minimalist) with my entire body weight and the only problem I've found after months of doing this is that they sometimes are uncomfortable and can be (quite literally) a pain in the butt.

But the knives them selves have never been damaged/lost centering/los parts or bent in any way. I think modern folders are tougher than we give them credit for!

I was taught at a young age never to carry things in the backpockets, as its very easy to be pickpocketed without noticing. Plus, I find it uncomfortable, probably because I have a firm and well defined back side.

That's why my Spot broke; true story... ;):D:foot:

You do realize I need a pic to believe that, don't you? ;) :p

Good to see that there's another butt model on bladeforums besides me...

And lone wolf, I'll see if I can get my wife to take a picture. She stopped smacking me on the ass because it hurts her hand.

So I've heard. But I have a small butt (my wife calls me the amazing buttless man) and I tend to sit more on my thighs than on my butt. The knife I keep in my wallet doesn't reach underneath my butt far enough to make meaningful contact with the cushion. So there's even even less reason for me to be concerned about my knife or my posture, I suspect. ;)

Don't get me wrong. There's nothing I like better than a firm, well-defined back side. I'm afraid my wife will have to cover both of us with respect to that particular aspect, however. :)

I'm not worried about the knife itself. I'm worried about the seat I'll be seating on. I used to clip my knife on my waist band just behind my hip. I quit because it would ride up as I sit and unclip itself then slide down when I stand up.

I love sitting on knives. Here are the knives that I throw in my back pocket in my jeans all day, everyday, at work. Once, I'm home I cant stand sitting on a knife. I dont carry a wallet and the knife basically feels like a wallet. All of my knives listed below function like new and still look like new other than wear from cutting stuff.

The following sit in my back pocket in the KSF main street pocket slip in order to protect the knife and'or keep the blade from opening up because I don't trust the detent.
Strider SNG
ZT0900

The following sit in my back pocket without a sheath
Spyderco Techno (best knife ever)
Spyderco Dragonfly 2
Case mini trapper
GEC 72 Lockback
Leatherman Skeletool CX (I thought I would at least bend the caribiner but it's been over a year and it still looks like new
Sebenza 21 micarta (this actually stays in my Chris Reeve sheath in my back pocket. The knife has zero wear. I've carried it this way for two years.)

I've never had any of these knives come open on me. However, I am careful about the knives I put in my back pocket without a sheath. I would never put a strider cc in my pocket without a sheath! Too weak of a detent. ...and like I said, none of these knives have bent or been damaged in my pocket. They all still have perfect action.

You aint doin it right unless you load up all your pockets with knives. Left rear pocket Leatherman squirt or Skeletool CX, right rear pocket, big knife, left front pocket a sheeple knife (the only knife exposed) but most people around me know that I am packin' more tools than they see.

I used to carry in the back pocket. If the knife was against the outside seam, it never really got sat on directly, kind of curved around the side of my butt lol. I do have some jeans with holes worn through the back pocket where a corner of the handle near the pivot slowly chewed through :D.

I've sat on my knives many times, i haven't noticed any sort of damage. Maybe because I'm a skinny guy at 150 lbs...
Honestly I can't even feel my knife unless I'm directly on it, then again, sebenzas are really flat.

I don't often see many (or even any) properly made traditional knives that have a bend in the handle, they seem to hold up fine. I've seen TONS of cheap shell handled traditionals with bends/ dints in the handles which obviously look like they've been sat on most of their life, but even then, they mostly hold up fine.
I don't have much experience with moderns, but I would have thought they would hold up pretty well, though they could have more handle flex from being longer, just depends on the design.

I've carried many traditionals in my back pocket at work, sitting on hard wooden benches or stools for periods of time with no damage to the knives at all. You hardly notice them but I could see them being a little uncomfortable if you sat all day.
As has been said, a modern can clip to the side of a back pocket and you're not even sitting on it.

Back pocket carry is a favorite of mine actually.
