Do you sit on your Knife?

Always have one clipped inside my right back pocket. Lately, have been carrying this thin framelock by Alan Davis:

Secure and comfortable. Actually, far more comfortable than any knife I carry clipped in my right front pocket.

I ALWAYS have a knife in my right back pocket.. usually it's a LE mini grip with scales and my main EDC in my right front pocket.. sak Alox cadet left front and flashlight in back left.. no bends, breaks or anything!!

I EDC a BK11 in my LRP literally every day. It's one of my 5 EDCs. Never even notice it's there.

My wallet on the other hand is so dang thick with "stuff" that I take it out while driving/sitting, especially for long periods of time. I have had lower back issues for many years since foolishly trying to lift a trailer tongue by my lonesome back when I was younger and dumber. Still have ongoing issues. Back when I was attending massage therapy school, one of our instructors told about his back issues getting worse and worse.

Finally, he broke down and went to a chiropractor in hopes of getting some relief as the regular doctors couldn't find anything wrong. The chiropractor did his x-rayed to see if he could identify anything obviously wrong. Nothing. Then the bone cracker started examining him before doing adjustment.

When the doctor saw the size of the wallet my instructor pulled out of his hip pocket, the doc said

"There's your problem. Your wallet is forcing you to sit crooked all the time and it's putting stress on your lower back. That's causing your pain."

My instructor said that he quit sitting on his wallet that day and hadn't had any back issues since. That was nearly 6 years after he went to the chiropractor for that only visit.

An original serrated Endura, FRN clip, rode in my right back pocket for over 15 years. No damage. My jeans took a permanent outline. The knife has a place of honor in my safe now.

I mean, obviously there are some insanely heavy people, but I am a big dude and don't think a knife has ever been hurt by sitting on it. SAKs, traditionals haven't been hurt. I don't put moderns in the back pocket, more moving parts. usually it's just uncomfortable for me.

Nope, I don't even sit on my wallet,,,strange I know. I pretty much keep everything in my front two pockets.
Same here. Comes in handy when you're working. You can use the back ones as "dump pouches" for random tools etc.

Northwoods Broadway Jack sits in my back pocket whenever not being used. I was a tad worried not about bending the frame but rather perhaps damaging the scales, (camel bone). No issues whatsoever. I will note however that carrying a couple other traditionals this way has led to pushing the blade into the spring and messing up the edge a little where there's that little hump where the pin is. Nothing that couldn't be sharpened out but annoying.

I carry a Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite in my back left pocket. But it is so small that I don't actually sit on it -- I can pull it out and clip it back in without unseating myself. Carrying a medium-to-large knife in my back pocket wouldn't be comfortable for me.

I'm also worried about the seat I'm sitting on, mainly leather car seats. If I get into someone else's car and they have leather seats, I couldn't ever forgive myself for making any kind of mark. I could just move it to my front pocket at that time, but if I'm going to move it sometimes, why not keep it in the front pocket all the time? Also, the back problems thing. Also, sometimes I carry a small traditional which is a pain to find in a deep back pocket and might be too "fragile".

I don't understand back pocket carry at all really. There are so many negatives to it and what are the positives? You keep the side of your front pocket free? For what, your hand? I could see doing it if you have a large tactical folder and you front pocket carry a small handgun, but that's about it

I have been known to back pocket carry a Buck 110, but that thing is full brass, heavy as a beast, no pocket clip, and carries awkwardly sideways in the front pocket. Of course, once I sit down somewhere I take it out of the back pocket.

Let me ask you, if there were a 4" folder in a chair you were about to sit in, would you move it before you sat down or would you sit on it?

No, I never sat on a knife.

I would never carry a knife in a back pocket wearing shorts, jeans or any type of pants.

My late husband and my MT husband never sat on their knives. They did not/do not carry their knives in their back pockets. None of the men in my life including my older brother, my late Dad, other close friends and older men in various professions never carried their knives in a back pocket. They wore/wear dress suits, jeans, casual slacks, shorts, cargo pants, military and/or police uniforms.

Side note: This is my opinion and your mileage may vary. NO problem.

Many men AND women carry too much junk in their wallets, pockets and male/female bags.

They could simplify it if they did a regular, daily or weekly, clean out and rotation of what they REALLY needed on a daily basis and in their professional bag, gear bag, tool bag, fanny pack, brief case, purse, wallet, etc.

The one poster was correct and if you SIT ON something that is not well balanced evenly with a FAT WALLET or a pocket full of stuff... that will throw your back out of whack. This goes for people who do not balance their man/female shoulder or hand held bags, fanny packs and back packs too.

I know of older men who had to change their open and/or concealed 'daily carry handgun' due to the weight, holster, style, etc. because it eventually HURT their balance, back, hips, and waist too. I am talking about men who carried for their profession and some who did not have to carry for their profession too.

PS:

I would be SICK if someone sat on their knife, broke their knife, stabbed their body and/or STABBED my two expensive Stressless black leather chairs, any of my nice Stickley pieces, any of my other nice 'now former furniture' that I used to own back east or even if they stabbed my lawn chairs that cost LESS money.

So yeah, I would not want Them to get hurt and I do not want my nice things hurt no matter what they cost too.

I was thinking the same thing about car, truck, suv and van 'leather, vinyl and cloth seats' PLUS sail boat and power boat seating too. Thank you for bringing this up here too.

I do not own a motor home but I know some people who do and those seats are expensive too!

Yeah, I don't like any knife sideways in the front pocket.

I work leaning in a machine tool or over a bench and dislike things in my front pockets at work. Comfort aside, I've actually worn holes in my pants where the keys (etc.) rubbed against stuff. I usually empty my front pockets into my toolbox when I get to work.

I started a thread here some years ago about back pocket carry of traditionals asking if it would hurt them. The consensus was no and it was an epiphany for me. I've back pocket carried many trads since (no shell handles, natch) with no issues.

After work I have "designated pockets" for money, keys, etc.. I'll back pocket carry occasionally but usually watch pocket carry.

I could see the worry about damage to seats, etc., but more so with a modern. A traditional is just a lump in the bottom of your pocket. Still, I could see that.

It's all whatever blows up your skirt though. De gustibus non est disputantum. :)

I ripped a car seat with the clip on a folder in my back pocket. Never carry on there unless it is a last resort.

I rarely carry a knife in my back pocket, but if I do I always try to remember not to sit down before I take it out. Invariably, I don't remember until I sit on it.
