My first knife. I still have not finished this one.

This is the first one I finished. I gave this one to a friend. Don't tell anyone, but I tempered it to blue with the forge.:thumbdn:

Ive been sanding and grinding out pointy metal objects since the mid 60's.Not many you could truly call a knife. These are my first two folders though made a month ago.

This is my first knife made in Nov.2010. I still have it and use it in the yard. It's 1095 and looks a little worse for wear now that I've reground the flats and changed the handle a little.

And here's one of my latest. My first damascus, hand hammered.

Here's my first (retrieved from a rusty junk pile.) Hammered it out from a scrap piece of steel cut off a leaf spring with an oxy acetylene torch. Seemed like I filed on the bugga forever!

Here are the first and second knives I've made. They're both made out of recycled bandsaw steel, ground on a Harbor Freight 1x30 sander, heat treated in a one brick propane forge, tempered in a toaster oven.

Several years ago there was an "Ugly Knife" contest here on BF. Some of these knives reminded me of it but believe me the winner was far worse than anything shown here.......so far anyway. :)

I do still have my first....of course, I've only completed four! But you didn't specify how long one had to have been making knives! :) Interestingly, my first is still my favorite...wonder how long that lasts?

Halfway done:

Finished, but far from flawless:

Absolutely. Did a WIP on it here when I made it. Stacy cut it and and did the HT for me. All done with files and sandpaper. Unfortunately life has been super hectic. I still have knives sitting on my bench back from HT that I haven't even touched yet. And have others I want to make, unfortunately my blocks of free time are maybe a half hour here and there. and that's barely enough time to get going.....Then you factor in that whole shop/time continuum thing, you have to stop before you get started. Hopefully within the next few months :o

I don't know if you ever got a grinder Fletch but it saves a lot of time:p. Even with the grinder I have 2 waiting to go out and more designs than I can count

I have a craftsman grinder but I get too many belt bumps past 220 grit. I should probably look into getting some Gator belts, I hear they're better at higher grits. And as obsessive as I am about finishes to get past 220 with small blocks of time just takes the energy right outta ya. I gotta be able to sit for like 3 hours with my optivisor to even have a hope to get beyond 400 grit.

Have you tried an orbital sander?

Some really great pics in this thread. Love seeing all these pics of first tries:thumbup:

Here is a pic of the very first knife I ever completed, my Two Finger Wharnie (it's the one on the bottom:D)

I still carry this one every day. I know it's ugly but it's been a great little companion.

Actually, no. Never heard of anyone actually using one on a knife before. Everyone always talks about hand sanding but never heard of the orbital being used.....Have you used them before?
