i know a lot of you people think you know how to survive. i thought well maybe i can put you to the test. i have been a woodsman all my life. im still learning but i know a lot more than most people. hence the name "griz" which stands for grizzly. now the way thisll work is ill ask a question first. the first person to answer correctly gets to ask the next question. and you gotta try to stump the other people. by this you will all be learning and sharping your skills and knowledge. the first question ill ask EVERY outdoorsman should know.

How do you make fire from ice???

Use it as a magnifying lens.

In truth, it's probably more for action/adventure novels, but in theory it might work.

hey .... wasn't that trick featured in the show THE EDGE and shown by Anthony Hopkins ???? ... can it really work ???

Bob

How do you get money to get something to eat, on a saturday early morning in NYC. You haven't a penny in your pocket No robbing people, no begging and no digging in garbage...

I'd just go to the nearest safe looking ATM and withdraw some loot from my account.

What can I say, education pays!

But if I were some unemployed homeless guy, I guess I would start walking from store to store offering to unload trucks, sweep and mop, carry out garbage, wash dishes, clean the toilets, or do whatever crappy manual labor job that needed to be done--and for less than minimum wage too.

And as soon as I saved enough money for a bus ticket, I would leave NYC and head to LA or Miami.
If I'm gonna be homeless and on the streets, it's gonna be in a warm city!

Good luck,
Allen.

Out of curiousity, has anyone here actually gotten the "ice magnifiying glass" trick to work?

It doesn't seem very realisitic.

Most that I've ever seen that has formed naturally has been full of bubbles, and not all that clear.

Furthermore, if it is the middle of winter and cold enough for ice, how much sunshine is there really going to be? And, how about dry tinder and wood?

I'm afraid I won't be able to try this trick out, since I moved to SoCal, and have already used my vacation days. Todays high temp is supposed to be a chilly 76 degrees. :)

im for real. and the magnifying glass does work. ive used it acouple times myself. and if your broke in new york with nothing to eat. find some odd jobs. theres always small tasks needed to be done.

heres another question: there are 2 sections of a spruce tree that you can eat. what are they and how do you eat them?

i forgot to add to the dry timber and wood question. you can find that where ever you can find a birch tree. birch bark i water proof and will light under any condition. and to make the magnifying glass you take a chunk of ice and meld it between your hands. it takes the shape of a lens and is clear. and beleive me it can be sunny and bright but still be -30C

No offence intended mate. Just seams you've achieved an awfull lot for a 17 year old.

I don't doubt the ice lens could work, but surely if you have the materials to build fire then it would be more efficient to construct a fire bow/drill than mold a lens out of a bit of ice, especially if you're allready cold and wet. Last thing I would want to be doing is exposing my allready freezing cold hands to a lump of ice in an attempt to make fire.

Just a thought

will,

the last thing you want to do when its cold out is make yourself sweat. when you sweat and then cool off the sweat will freeze and can be the cause of your death. sure the ice will be cold but its better than freezing your entire body. and the bow and drill takes time and preparation to do. you need all your senses with you to make it. if your lost and are beginning to lose it do you think youll be able to pull yourself together enuf to make and construct the bow and drill? the ice lens takes no thought at all. just cut out a chunk and meld it. then use like a magnifying glass. its that simple!

the ice trick will only work if it's sunny, in which case, you're not in as much danger as when it's cold and wet out...

Viking-

I think your post is a wee bit brash. There are people on this forum who would make really good mentors for you to learn from. And, as you imply, there are many others who are hobbyists, myself included, who probably don't have the extensive knowledge that you obviously have acquired in your few short years since birth. I guess I'm just saying be careful how you address an unknown audience.

My survival question: How do you answer a woman's question (any question) without being wrong?

I would melt the ice down and extract the deutrium from the water with my compact cyclotron I keep in my butt pack.

Then I would use the deutrium to charge my flux capacitor and route the charge through a plasma conduit to my hand held 20 terrawatt x-ray laser which I would then point and the nearest tree and fire.

Duh! I thought everyone knew that.

It can be done...

Funny, Cedar (juniper) Bark is always dry, too...

If you can get the ice formed from a pure, mineral free spring, above 8,500 ft in the dark of the moon at midnight on the winter solstice.

But the real problem is that you need to use it before 6:22 AM MDT or it looses it's powers...
