Do you use every knife you own or do you have some safe queens?

I pretty sure the majority of people on this site have at least one knife they don't use. My question is why? Sentimental value? Too expensive? Too pretty?

Personally, I use every knife I own. I have too many hobbies and not enough money to have safe queens.

just curious...

I use them all. I'm not a collector, I've just sort of accumulated a lot of knives as my tastes or needs have changed, but they've all seen (and continue to see) use, though some more than others. I've oohed and aahed over some of the really beautiful and expensive knives that are available, but I'd never buy them, as I'd be hesitant to use them.

I have a use for all of the knives, but do not use them all, all of the time. Some are designated for particular uses or different activities or bug out bags, although most are in storage. Not as safe queens, but my living situation does not allow me to travel with them. I have a transit /BoB that one knife is for, a winter survival bag that a different knife is suited for. Basically, i have a bag for many different purposes, and one or more knives for each.

Unfortunately, I have quite a few that don't get used. I'll get a knife & check it out, but not use it. If I feel like I won't use it, then I'll trade/sell it. However, I seem to set aside many of them, as "I don't know" knives. That pile keeps getting bigger!

I don't see anything wrong with buying for collection purposes. I'd be scared to use some of the knives I've seen at shows.

The easy answer is no ..... if you mean do I use them all now. But I have my first pen knife ..... and my cub scout knife. My first hunting knife ... a Kbar that is at least a half inch thinner and two inches shorter that it started out ...... Just about every year of my adult life I have found some knife that just had to come home with me ..... and I used every one until the next one came along. For the moment ..... actually for the last 10 years or more I've had a mini Spyderco on my key chain ........ and the past 6-7 years a Dozier on my belt when I'm in the outdoors ...... but this will change very soon when my first custom knife will arrive.

Although I carry a knife everyday, I have quite a few knives that see little or no use. I'm more of a collector than user.

I have 47 folders. About 15 of them never see daylight. 10 are collectors and the other 5 I just don't like. So that leaves 32 knives that I use. Most used is Delica 4 PE, Salt1 SE, Kershaw Blur s30v, Kershaw Leek s30v g10, CRK Small Sebenza Classic, Buck 110 35 YO, BM 710, BM Mini Grip 555HG, Manix SE, Dragon Fly SS PE, Boker Trance, BM 440 Resistor, Emerson CQC7, Almar SLB, Native PE S30V, SOG Pentagon
You can never have too many sharp or bright things!

Nope, some serve as back-ups to my EDC pieces and probably won't ever get used unless I lose the original piece.

Same here. I have used them all, but there's only so many different things I need a knife for, and I have several for each of most uses. My knife use is at an all time low right now, and only a few of them get used very often. Lost interest in trying and comparing different steels, so there isn't much motivation to buy more.
I do tend to get rid of knives that I'm not using. Last year I sold half a dozen or so, and bought none(well, one, but it didn't fit me well, so got sold pretty quickly).

Every one of my knives has seen a fair amount of pocket time at one time or another.

I've got a couple that I no longer use much because I've since bought others that I like better. I also have one that I bought just so I could try that alloy. Never cared for the knife, but the alloy was hard to find in knives in my price range, so I bought it. AUS10 turned out to be good stuff. But once I got a feel for the performance of the blade I stopped carrying it.

I have no safe queens.

I use, or have used, all of my knives at one time or another, except for three that are family heirlooms. Of those, I actually carried an old Robeson Stockman (my grandfather's) for several months before I found out how valuable it was.

I'm in the process of purging, and getting rid of some my collection - giving the good ones away as gifts; narrowing down to the few that I reach for when the need arises.

thx - cpr
