Do you use your Knife more then you should?

I think we all might be alittle guiltly of this. Me especially me. Since I dont really "need" knives,( I dont work on a ranch or do hardcore camping and such ), I find myself pulling out my knives for jobs that dont really need a one.

Like that apple I ate today, I could have just eaten it normally but instead I pulled out my knife and cut it up.

And the letters I got today I could have opened with my hands, but I used my knives.

I pretty much collect knives for the joy they bring me:D , and I know part of the fun of owning them is using them. But does anyone else find them selves doing this?

Not me, I use my knives several times a day almost everyday. Crazy thing is I don't use a knife to open my mail. I rip them open so I don't accidentally slice through whatever papers are inside. I once put a nice two inch slice in a check.

Yes.

When someone asks me for directions, I take out my knife and point - "That way".

Im kinda OCD about dirt under my finger nails so I'M always scraping them clean. Lets see tday I used my knife to open about 30 or so bags of Rock salt. Cut a Can in 1/2 to make a container to soak some parts in for the salt spreader. Flicking open a Hogue EX-01 as I type this well try to type. I think that's about it but the night is young you never know when Ill need to give some directions.

I absolutely do not. To break down cardboard I just rip it apart at the seams. I would rather keep my knife sharp then cut unnecessary stuff like letters and boxes that can easily be ripped open by hand.

I am guilty of this. Just today I broke down a few soda pop boxes for the wood burner. It wasn't needed, but of course I did it. When I get junk mail I slice it up to "test" my edge. Anytime I get something in a box and I don't need or want the box it gets sliced up into tiny pieces and burned. I cut up some wood from my old front porch with a chainsaw and used my knife to clean the grimy sawdust from the chain cover after I adjusted it. The screw driver would have worked fine, but I had a knife. Oh and when I'm reading the forums I play with one. I always make an excuse to use a blade because its just fun :D

Unless you're using it as a crowbar or screwdriver, or just being a jerk to intimidate folks, it's not really possible to "use a knife more than you should". They're meant for cutting things.

If you prefer to keep your favorite knife finely-tuned for certain tasks, I respect that. If your knife doesn't hold up to whatever your typical use is in a day or week, you need a different knife.

Isn't this like saying, I use my index finger too much. An index finger is a handy tool and so is your EDC. You use it without thinking about it, and would soon miss it if it would ever go missing.

And for lifting caps, may I add. :D

I use it every chance I get. Someone is having even a little trouble with a package.... I got that. Stray string on you pants or shirt.....easy fix! I just like to be able to use it for anything possible

Boxes? Sure, the ones I cut up are double corrugated anti-freeze boxes with a bonded internal divider, and they get the big X on the bottom to fold up.

Letters - yes. Fingernails, yes. Chipping ice from the grille and hood of my daughter's car to get to the battery and jump it, yes. Am I still trying to get the nicks out, yes.

Knives are for cutting, I use mine on a lot of stuff. When it gets a bit risky and I don't need a blade sticking out of my hand, I use a special pair of knives with finger holes in them to control the cut. :)

Shave a door to get it to fit a jamb - yes. Didn't have a plane, and the Randall was handy. Cut open clamshell paks or tie wraps - yes. But it's done better with that special pair. I just don't like to carry then. Nobody makes really cool ones.

I'd post more, but I need to cut up a big cardboard box the dishwasher came in, and some oak flooring boxes, too. I'd rather recycle the cardboard in the dumpster at work than clog my roll around up for days.

SnG, or BM CQC7? Hmm. Resilience or the Boker Magnum Tech Folder in cf?

Decisions, decisions. Use it, don't let it just rust away in your pocket.

Pretty sure I do.
Of course I see every use as needed but the truth is I don't really need to use a knife every time.
Like fabric, I could rip it, but I cut it.
Boxes, I could tear them open, but I cut them.
Envelopes, I could tear them, again, I cut them.
I also clean my nails with my knife - I could just use a file.
Plastic on food and stuff - I cut it lol.

The knife really is helpful though, it makes a quick, easy, and cleaner job of these things. And cuts open clamshells no problem.

I love my knives and love using them.
Tape and boxes are probably what they get used for the most. As well as cord and fabric.

I'm guilty as well! But that moment when you really do need a knife, and it's right by your side... Priceless!

Personally I try to never ever use my hard use folders incase I need to abuse them... I want them to still have that pristine factory edge incase SHTF...

I do plumbing, when me and another guy find ourselves needing a knife. I always have mine out first. Just ready to cut something.

I sort of miss the old days when I had no problem turning a pen blade into a screwdriver.
